I do find the irony in sports pundits discounting the Bears wins for bum-slaying, while 3 days ago everyone was betting on Jacksonville winning outright, enough to push the line like 4 points.

ESPN has the Bears 16th: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41793922/nfl-power-rankings-week-7-poll-2024-one-lesson-learned Same 9 teams ahead of them as Sagarin, but also has Tampa, Atlanta, Washington, Dallas and Seattle above them, which....ehh.

This is now a Bears power ranking week 7 thread. Sagarin ratings updated: http://sagarin.com/sports/nflsend.htm Bears 10th, 29th rated schedule (which tracks, they've played 3 of the 5 worst teams in football). Teams above the Bears: Vikings, Lions, Packers, 49ers, Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, Texans, Steelers. The NFC North has lapped the NFL field in terms of team quality.

    NFL Week 6

bukie replied to Brian707's topic in Other Sports

Thought while watching this game: "Man, it's wild that Illinois has two kickers better than anyone in this game." Feels like the Bills effectively wrapped up the AFC East tonight. The division is garbage, and the Bills already have road wins vs the Dolphins and Jets.
  5. bukie
Hey, the Blackhawks won Saturday night. On the road (where they got just 7 wins last season). Against the defending Stanley Cup finalists and current Stanley Cup favorite. And Bedard was the best player on the ice (by game score, Teuvo by quality adjusted game score). Bedard was not good against the Jets, but a win like this is encouraging in terms of "hey, this might be a real NHL quality team this year".

If the Lions win this game... Division records against teams not in their division: 8. AFC East 5-10 7. NFC West 5-10 6. AFC North 8-12 5. AFC South 6-9 4. NFC South 6-8 3. NFC East 10-8 2. AFC West 9-4 1. NFC North 16-4

I'm not convinced there's anything Patrick Williams does at an NBA-quality level.

Almost immediately followed by a bad giveaway in the defensive end when screwing around too much in the back. Keep pushing, don't just settle back.

50 minutes into the Poch era, the US has a goal and a lead vs Panama. It at least feels like they're being much more aggressive and forcing action thus far.

The Dodgers and Padres played a week earlier than everyone else. And MLB is such that teams play every day 4-5 times per week.

I coach with a class D soccer coaching license (I will give it to organized soccer leagues, they are very strict on coaching requirements and you need the license to coach), which allows me to coach kids up to 13. No headers allowed at any level up to that age, and if a purposeful header is done in a game it's a foul. Incidental contact with the head happens anyway, especially for young players when the ball can go flying in random directions, but any head contact results in an immediate stop in play, that player removed from the field until evaluated and cleared by a medical professional (or sometimes coach if no medical is available on site, but then you have to follow the protocol). Rec leagues are typically their own beast, though, especially if they aren't sanctioned by IYSA.

And that falling is made easier if you, say, trip over a hurdle or land wrong after a high jump or long jump.
  13. bukie
That's a common misnomer, as concussion rates for soccer are much lower than football, especially for youth (in youth soccer, headers are not allowed to avoid players going head first into anything). Wrestling/MMA is worse than football for concussions (...obviously?), but tackle football on the whole is effectively a broken sport in terms of youth safety, as every play involves at least a small collision for at least half of the players on the field, and the worst thing about a concussion is successive concussions while still playing the game. Regarding Brisker specifically, he often leads with the head to put hits on players without even using his arms, which will occasionally jar a ball loose but is not a sustainable style of play for a long career or life after career. EDIT: Charts!

Last night's net game score for the Hawks: Summary: Bedard and Teuvo good, Vlasic OK but bad defensively, Brodie bad (also Mrazek bad overall, doesn't show up on this chart). Back end of Hawks rotation was really bad, Bedard/Teravainen generated basically all the offensive chances for the team last night.

Better last 30 minutes overall, but need to improve passing to get better scoring chances. Power plays were terrible, empty net at the end got them some good chances and a post, but couldn't get one in at the end.
  16. bukie
Maybe this third power play they'll get a SOG.
  17. bukie
Somehow this second power play is worse than the first.
  18. bukie
Passing has been atrocious, especially on the power play. ...of course now they score. Good play by Bedard to create the chance.
  19. bukie
A single shot on goal in the first period...not great.

Secret wish for this college football season: that this year's Army-Navy game ends up being for the Group of 5 playoff spot. Getting closer to reality every week. EDIT: Biggest caveat for this possibility is both teams play Notre Dame, but sorry Irish, rooting for Army-Navy this year.

For you power rankings fanatics that may or may not be UM fans.... Sagarin has updated his ratings for this NFL season now that we're 1/4 of the way in: http://sagarin.com/sports/nflsend.htm Notables: - The Bears are the 12th overall and 6th best NFC team behind Detroit, Minnesota, San Fran, Green Bay and Philly, just ahead of Dallas and Atlanta. Feels about right? - The Bears have played the softest schedule thus far, and have lost the only two games they've played against potential playoff quality teams. - The NFC North is by far the best division in football this season. - Weighted by recent play, the Bears are 8th overall, still 4th in the NFC North behind #1 Minny, #4 Detroit and #5 GB.

Utah gets a basketball team: "Sure, we'll keep being the Jazz, despite that being as far from a Utah thing as humanly possible" Utah gets a hockey team: "No, we can't be the Coyotes, that doesn't represent Utah."

Actually had the TD on a QB scramble, but called back for a clipping penalty on Kramer for 15 yards. Didn't connect on two passes from the 15 and then kicked the FG.
  24. bukie
Fun fact, this was actually the Bears 8th straight home win dating back to last season, the longest active home winning streak in the NFL.
  25. bukie
Waiting for Caleb to throw a 3 yard completion.
