  1. Depends on the tiebreaker: Cost. As any player does, yes. But what I'm saying is that I tend to value offensive production over defense at a position like 1B more than, say, any other position. It's a position where you simply need a high end offensive player. If Fielder was producing a similarly comparative offensive and defensive value at a more crucial defensive position, then I'd be less inclined to value him as highly.
  2. So, to sum up: Positives: Age, Injury History, Plate Discipline, Power, Covers a position of need, Left-handed Negatives: Baserunning, Fielding, Body Type The primary question becomes do you accept the positives over the negatives, and for how long? For me, offensive ability like Fielder's comes at a premium, and as long as he can keep that up and stay healthy, he should be paid a premium to produce it. I'd love to get away with a 5 year deal, and 6 would be satisfactory. The problem with the Cubs right now, in my opinion, is they have a complete dearth of options at 1B internally for the next several years (I mean, it's what, Vogelbach possibly, Vitters maybe, or else they'd better start drafting players that have a bat that can stick at first). The options they're left with is to see if they can get value in a trade for somebody like Logan Morrison and hope he pans out, or pick up Daric Barton if the A's drop him and see if his last year was a fluke (and is also just one year younger than Fielder). Both of those options have more questions than Fielder does, and it's not always about getting the most value efficient team, it's about getting the best team, and Fielder is easily the best option available for at least the next four years.
  3. Stat that probably amuses only me: Syracuse hasn't lost a non-conference road game in 10 years (Dec 16, 2001 @ Georgia Tech). That would sound impressive, except that they've played five since then, two against terrible in-state teams in Siena and Canisius. So that makes three times in the last 10 years they've traveled to another team's arena out of state.
  4. So seeing significant playing time is indicative of how good a player is or proof that they've been a good draft pick? That my friend, is nonsense. Chris Williams is a below average guard and has had one small stretch of decent play before getting hurt. Chris Williams was the only above average lineman the Bears had this year. Everything you've said the last two pages is nonsense.
  5. Yeah, if you're going to go to the trouble of getting the Diamondbacks involved in a trade, just trade for Chris Young, who's been quietly good the past couple years.
  6. Considering they were barely getting votes (AP) last week, jumping to 18 is pretty enormous.
  7. Some folks on Brewerfan seem to think they're getting him for 3/30, which is as outrageous as thinking they're going 3/48 for him. I'm guessing around 3/40.
  8. On the plus side, it's even less likely they're in the bidding for Fielder now.
  9. Got to admit, he did some things last night to improve my opinion of him. At least he seems like a good guy and into the job more than Zook really ever was. Also, are we sure that's a real account? Looks like a fake account.
  10. One more thing of note tonight: Murray State won at Memphis to go to 10-0. This is notable in that it will be the very last time Murray State plays a top 150 team until the NCAA tournament.
  11. The Big Ten definitely is better than the Big East in basketball this year, by a large margin. The Big 12 might be better than the Big East this year. in basketball? i think this is a pretty bad year for hoops in the big 12. 30% of the league could be in the top 10 this upcoming week, and really only Texas Tech is going to be noncompetitive in conference play. 8 of 10 teams have legitimate shots at an NCAA berth (Iowa State might land an NIT berth?).
  12. Illini pull away late to win a closer-than-the-final-score-indicates 80-63 win that was somehow 59-57 with 7 minutes to play. I blame David Lo Pan.
  13. Of course. But Pat Robertson goes on TV and says natural disasters are punishment from God. And people apparently believe it. Point is, I guarantee you a large amount of people think Tebow is getting a hand from the big guy. And again, this is Tebow's fault how? Hell, if anything, it's the people looking for any excuse to crucify him that's perpetuating the Jesus image right now.
  14. I'm sure if he was asked he'd admit he sins all the time. Yeah, I don't get the whole "Tebow is self-righteous" angle. He's religious and his team has had ridiculous success in part because of his rushing ability. That's really all there is to it.
  15. I think the thing that makes me the most angry is that if Cutler is healthy, there is not a doubt in my mind the Bears are easily 10-3 right now.
  16. That might just be the single worst play of the NFL this year.
  17. If Barber stays in bounds, the Broncos have about 12 seconds.
  18. So now instead of 20 seconds, they'll have 1:10.
  19. What the hell are you doing, Barber?
  20. Or...you know, just get 4 yards in 3 plays with Barber.
  21. Really just need a couple first downs here, drain the clock. A FG would be a huge bonus.
  22. ....eventually.
  23. UNLV is the next big test If they lose to Coppin State tomorrow, I'll know who to blame.
  24. He was hired by the Atlanta Hawks? I'd hardly consider that being run out of Champaign.
  25. I happen to think Indiana is largely underrated by the general public this year because of the prior three years, and should definitely be a top 25 team. I have a hard time right now distinguishing between Big Ten teams other than Ohio State and Nebraska/Iowa/PSU, which will of course sort itself out over the next two months. This UK-IU game is, though, one of the two or three biggest chances for them to lose this year.
