  1. Well, he did win an NBA championship.
  2. Certainly ended that way. Amazing that Gonzaga is shooting 60% from the field and has double the rebounds of the Illini and it's tied.
  3. Better than Hawaii.
  4. SCS is to player evaluation like Gary Bettman is to labor negotiations. So bad it's surprising he still tries it.
  5. Coach of the #1 team that started the year unranked and widely believed hugest draft pick TE win awards? More pro-ND bias obviously. Can't be merit. Why isn't Eifert considered ND's best player?
  6. That's not so much because of some grand conspiracy as because the Heisman has been ESPNized. Almost every year now someone wins by a gigantic margin because ESPN has taken to spending the last month or so of the season pimping somebody as the front-runner. The only times in recent years that haven't brought a giant margin are years like 2009 where literally no one stands out at all (except Suh, who was robbed, but whatever). Suh stands a good example of a much more dominant college player who couldn't reach the top three in the heisman. But Te'o is being held back because of the anti-ND bias. Right. NEBRASKA WAS [expletive] 9-4 Yeah, Suh probably wins the award if Nebraska wins the Big 12 that year. His competition was Mark Ingram, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, and Tim Tebow.
  7. ND's Brian Kelly wins coach of the year, and ND's Tyler Eifert wins the John Mackey award, for best TE of the year.
  8. Exactly. Whether you believe the number is 13.5 or not is nearly irrelevant. All indicators(scouting reports, basic stats, advanced stats) are that Barney is a terrific defender and has been his entire career. Similarly, indicators are that Cabrera is not very good defensively and hasn't been for most/all of his career. Make your own judgement as to whether that closes the offensive gap, but the "defensive metrics aren't perfect, so there's no way an offensive gap could be closed by them" is just anti-logic. What, now you're saying you won't accept the argument of "defensive numbers can't be accurately objectified, so they have no comparative value"?
  9. ND has both the most obnoxious fans and the most obnoxious haters. That is why college football is more interesting when ND is good. Both the fans and the haters care more, and the rest of us can enjoy the conflict. Plus, it makes the media's job easy.
  10. Yes. This is a weird conversation. - Brenly chose not to return - He was entertaining, but had weird fixations with criticizing certain players - Deshaies is well liked, and many have optimism that he can be an improvement on Brenly That about the crux of it?
  11. Have we gotten to the part yet where everyone realizes the Heisman trophy and its voting procedure is both predictable and stupid? Here are the criteria of a Heisman-worthy player: 1. Best QB on the #1 team 2. Best QB on a top 10 team 3. Best skill player on the #1 team 4. Best player on the #1 team This season, the options are so limited they've resorted to a freshman #2 and a defensive #4.
  12. I can't vote for the #2 prospect here. It's only letting me vote for the #3 prospect.
  13. A quirk I totally understand. But we all have our crosses to bear, and I've learned to mostly deal with the backflips people will do to justify the Cubs' front office's actions. By doing backflips to criticize the front office's actions.
  14. Sure, after we vote 3-4 it'll get a lot more interesting anyway.
  15. The biggest issue I had with Brenly was his weird obsession with ragging on guys like Ramirez, Soriano and Castro for any minor issue.
  16. If I'm wrong, awesome, but it just seems like a terrible combination of situations for Illinois, what with a Gonzaga team that might be Ohio State/Michigan good, with their best player matched up with the Illini's weakest link, and a rare national TV spot for a Gonzaga team that is really going to want to make a statement that they're worthy of a top 2 seed.
  17. I think we will compete. We've played to the opponent a lot this year. we'll compete, but probably still lose by 10 or more. there is a chance we shoot well and win. This might be the best Gonzaga team yet, and Illinois is likely the highest ranked team they'll get this year (unless Oklahoma State continues to rise the next three weeks). Illinois plays to their opponent, but the best opponent they've faced this year is Butler, who isn't even a top 50 team. If Illinois keeps it within 20, it'll be a moral victory.
  18. 29% shooting and won by 8. So...yay?
  19. You do realize that Baez's offensive upside is the whole reason the overwhelming majority voted him #1, right? That is a rhetorical question.
  20. Ideally, I'd like a mix of guys like Paul that are good enough to really boost the program but not good enough for early entry and then mix in some of the one and done's. But preferably the one-and-dones who do more with the "one"s than Richmond. EDIT: And the "done"s, for that matter.
  21. I went with Vizcaino, because even though he's a pitcher coming off TJ surgery and nobody's sure he'll be able to start, he's still a safer bet to contribute to the major league roster than an 18-year-old with one month out of rookie ball.
  22. Sagarin predictors for BCS teams: 1. Alabama 98.96 2. Oregon 95.72 3. Notre Dame 93.16 4. Kansas State 93.06 6. Florida 91.32 9. Stanford 88.83 14. Florida State 86.24 20. Wisconsin 83.39 44. Northern Illinois 77.22 60. Louisville 72.25 Taking those differences as potential lines for the games: Alabama (-6) v Notre Dame Oregon (-2) v Kansas State Stanford (-5) v Wisconsin Florida State (-9) v Northern Illinois Florida (-19) v Louisville
  23. Illinois up to 13th in the AP poll this week, a spot high enough where even the most unabashed Illini homer is thinking to themselves "Wow, that seems a little high."
  24. Bunch of big names on the ballots this year, which have just gone out to voters. TRIVIA: Name the five players all-time who stole more than 800 bases. (Hint: four of them are currently in the Hall of Fame) EDIT: Here's the ballot for this year: http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/hof_2013.shtml
