    A stat that was skewed because of their two blowout wins in back to back days. How many runs did the "best lineup ever" score in the last two games of the series? Great pitching, most of the time, beats great hitting. This series proved that fact. Well if that's the case then if you take out the last 2 games of the series, the Yankees averaged nearly 6 runs a game. 4 games proves nothing, especially the above which is far, far from a fact. While you're right about the 4 games proves nothing, 162 games does. The Tigers had the best staff in the league and that's how they reached the postseason. Their offense was very similar to the 2005 White Sox; heavily relying on the longball, and a very mediocre offense when they aren't hitting their solo homers. Their pitching definitely carried them to their 95 wins and ultimately has them in the ALCS. Good offenses do win championships; the Red Sox won in 2004. It just seems like to me that the teams that win the Series have a great staff and great pitching in general to rely on. The White Sox last year, the Marlins of 03, the Angels of 02, and the D'Backs of 01 all had outstanding pitching. I don't think it's a coincidence that those teams won it all.

    That comment really is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen. To imply that at least half of Maddux's earned runs were due to lack of defense is insane. i agree Agree. So it's the defense's fault that Maddux hung pitches right over the middle of the plate? What's the defense supposed to do when the ball gets hit hard in the gap or if it's hit out of the park? He had a heck of a month in April, but let's be honest...he was absolutely brutal in May and June and the start of July before his last couple of starts. To blame the defense for his struggles is pretty absurb.

    Tough for Washington...USC is not worthy of their #3 ranking. SIU won their homecoming game over Western Illinois, 31-24. Besides our defense having the worst game of the season, our offense once again was very solid and worthy of the title of being a top 2 offense in I-AA. Our offense basically moved the ball every possession..not one 3 and out for our offense. The I-AA game of the year could be next week in Normal when SIU travels to Illinois State. Pretty pumped up about that :D

    Same here. Let's hope the Yankees lose the next 2 with A-Rod going, oh, 0/9 with something like 6 K's :wink: I think it is a very realistic probability that A-Rod could be traded. His honeymoon in the city of New York has definitely ended and he has become the media (and the fans) whipping boy.

    It's about half and half with me. The A's series is going real well for me and the Tigers at least evened up that series, but this series is pretty bad right now. Hopefully the Dodgers win tonight.

    You just had to know that someone in the Yankees lineup was going to make Verlander pay for all of the trouble that he was getting into. This series is, unfortunately, going to be over quick.

    SIU's homecoming is this weekend against Western Illinois. WIU nearly upset Western Kentucky last week, before losing the game in the final minute. WIU gives up a lot of points, so SIU should hopefully score over 40 for the 4th time this season. I believe our defense should also be able to shut down Western and we should be 5-0 after Saturday. NIU is playing on Sunday night this week; great air-time for people to see the man himself, Garrett Wolfe. Let's see...Northwestern beat Miami Ohio big. Northwestern (sorry Jon) is not a real good team this year. NIU should be able to score their share of points on Miami's defense. I'm hoping the Redhawks can get a couple of fluke TD's to keep it somewhat close so Garrett can pad his stats, but I'm greedy like that :D NIU should win this game by 2-3 scores.

    2005 Whitesox. Worked out pretty well for them . The '05 White Sox were a below average offense. Okay, now I'm done, I mean it. Hopefully you're done. Because everything you just said is not even close to being true. Outside of his fact? Small ball works. Worked for the 05 Whitesox, and it works throughout baseball. It's often counterintuitive and hurts the team. I've seen it hurt the Twins and Tigers already once each today. And the 05 White Sox was built around a fantastic starting rotation, a good closer and a team that hit 200 HRs (that made up for their other deficiencies on offense). I'll agree with you about the great rotation and the power, but I don't really think the Sox were built around a good closer. Hermanson started the season and had a Rod Beck-type first half as he was somehow getting save after save. Once his back flared up, they went to Jenks in around mid-late July. I'd say Jenks was a relative unknown; especially seeing how he never saw a major league inning prior to his call-up. I don't think it's fair to say that they built their team around a good closer; unless you are talking about Hermanson, but he wasn't really available in the stretch run.

    Why? Are you kidding me? He managed a team with a $14 million dollar payroll, and had them in contention for the wild card untill the last 2 weeks in the season. Everyone predicted the marlins to lose over 100 games this year. The team didn't have a winning season, had some of the best young talent in baseball and he was responsible for sending one of their best young pitchers out after a long rain delay. The pitcher then had a season ending arm injury in the same game. He is infatuated with the sac bunt, made poor personnel decisions at the begining of the year and was told to make changes. I don't see any reason why the cubs better pick him. Yes, Girardi was given a team with talent, but it was largely unproven ML talent. Either it was flat out luck or Girardi (and his coaching staff) had something to do with it. Exactly. Sure they had a lot of talent, but like you said, most of the talent hardly had any ML experience. To win 78 games after many people say they could have one of the worst records in recent memory is unbelievable. Girardi has to get some of that credit, right?

I don't see any reason why the cubs better pick him. I'll agree with you about the point about throwing a pitcher out there after a rain delay...that was a stupid decision that definitely backfired. But I believe Girardi's Marlins was the first team in over 100 years to be 20 games under .500 at one point in the season and then later make it over .500 in the same season. The team was picked to win 50 games...60 would've been a miracle before the season started. Remember, this was a team with "some of the best talent in baseball" that was being picked to win only 50 games the whole season. He nearly had this team win the Wild Card this year before they faded with two weeks left. Give credit where credit is due, that is extremely impressive. I didn't really want Girardi last year as I felt he was unproven, but he proved himself this year. Everything that I have heard from his players were positive things about Girardi; don't let that dumb owner fool you. The guy is a solid manager IMO.

    Congrats, guys. Bears are definitely the best team in the NFC, if not the entire NFL right now. This beatdown definitely makes me feel less embarassed that we "only" lost by 26 to you guys :lol:
