  1. Most talented league every year. Of course when you have a Cubs, Marlins, Brewers, and Dodgers affiliate in the league.....that's gonna happen. Heck, even Arizona and TB have pretty good systems. Should be just as good next year with the guys coming up from A-ball. Can't complain about the rankings. Nice to see they think Hill could be a #3. I was thinking 4-5 was his ceiling. Nolasco is a big time sleeper. I think he could become one of those guys that quietly has a solid 10-year ML career. He won't kill himself with control, but can get the big strikeout. He'll give up the longball, but won't get knocked around.
  2. Jeff Weaver has the lowest WHIP of anyone not named Clemens. He also has the best walk rate not including Clemens and Byrd. Weaver has always intrigued me. He's a potential Matt Clement type of pitcher who can have a late breakout. He had one of his best years in BB/9, K/9, and BAA. However, he unexplicably gave up 35 HRs playing in Dodgers Stadium. With Boras, he'll probably continue to be overpaid too.
  3. Same here. Actually, I thought just the opposite. I also thought that the Cubs top three beats there top three. And I think they still would if two of them weren't made out of glass. I also think Clemens is juicing like crazy and has been for years. I can only assume you are saying Prior is made of glass. How dare him not be able to take a line drive off the pitching elbow!
  4. Well, Lofton is gonna be 39 next year. Giles is only gonna be 35. If Lofton is gonna break down now and you're comparing the two....shouldn't that mean Giles has 4 more years before he hits the wall? Then when you consider Lofton's game is speed, Giles is OBP and power. Speed usually goes first.
  5. Raw, something is definitely going on here that none of us understand. Given his production, his left-handed bat and his cheap option, Walker should be a slam dunk to be back. But he isn't a slam dunk, as evidenced by the fact that neither Dusty or Hendry are embracing him. I'm beginning to wonder if there is some rift in the clubhouse with him involved, or some chemistry concern or some prolonged injury concern. I can't imagine that his average defense alone would cause so much consternation. Hoops Yeah, that's what I'm guessing. I think if that is the case then Hendry and Baker need to get over it. There's not a player who's been in the league over 3-years who gives you a better cost/production ratio.
  6. It's sad that "none" in that sentence is not an exaggeration. Has there ever been a worse OF?
  7. Agreed. No reason NOT to have Walker at 2B for the Cubs next year, unless they really don't want him back for reasons I can't even fathom. Even if you can get one of the few 2B better, it will cost the Cubs more unjustified money, and most importantly, cost them players.
  8. Van Buren doesn't have pinpoint control to begin with. I don't know if he will have the control to stick in the ML pen next year. His minor league walk totals are solid as a reliever, but he struggled with control as a starter. I think it only gets tougher with more patient professional hitters.
  9. Yeah, I remember you. Welcome. What took you so long?
  10. My thinking it will be Jonny Gomes of the Devil Rays. .282, 21 hr, 54 rbi in 101 games. OBP of .375 as well. That's not bad playing for a crappy team. Crappy team, but pretty good offense. I'd kill for that offensive talent. Heck, I'd love to get my hands on Delmon, BJ and Jonny alone! Yeah that would be nice. But I love Baldelli too. I think he comes back real strong next year. I think he'll be a Nomar like hitter soon. I wonder if they would be open to trading him. They still have a ton of OF talent if they get rid of him and Huff.
  11. Strange, considering I don't remember a single person saying Dusty is the sole reason the Cubs were out in July. In fact, there was just a thread in which several other reasons were given much, much more blame. I believe "injuries" was the most popular reason.
  12. My thinking it will be Jonny Gomes of the Devil Rays. .282, 21 hr, 54 rbi in 101 games. OBP of .375 as well. That's not bad playing for a crappy team. Crappy team, but pretty good offense. I'd kill for that offensive talent.
  13. I'm looking to trade. I'm looking for a top-notch 1B. I have guys with great potential to comeback from down seasons (Ordonez, Wilkerson), some up and coming exempt players (D. Johnson, V. Diaz), and a bunch of pitching prospects.
  14. That's a good point. And as UK said, he should win a gold glove this year. His defense was huge for the best pitching staff in baseball.
  15. Of course, as a Cub fan, I'd love to see DLee win the MVP. But you'd call it a disgrace if Pujols won? Ssh. This thread is for Derrek.
  16. I remember when Depp was doing the movie "Ed Wood" and Sarah Jessica Parker said how depressing it was to be a woman and not be as attractive in a dress as Johnny Depp was. I'd do Depp!
  17. When I mentioned Kearns or Pena, I didn't necessarily mean for RF. Giles is what we need for RF, but we need to be prepared for the possibility that he won't leave the West Coast. I wonder whether Murton, Kearns, or Pena can play CF. It couldn't be much worse defensively than Nomar in LF. Pena can play CF decently. Murton and Kearns would struggle in CF.
  18. Congrats Derrek on a masterful season. You were the best player in baseball this season. If you don't win the MVP trophy, it's a disgrace. You deserve it. And I will always remember the 2005 season as the YEAR OF RODAN!
  19. I'm glad this two-week long "oh my team sucks more" bitch-fest is over! Just kidding guys. Congrats on a great season. I'm looking forward to next year with some great keepers, a solid draft and a few trades.
  20. At this point, Kerry is not a good pitcher. He is grossly overpaid and let's hope that 2006 is his last year in a Cubs uniform. My hope is that some team next year will be stupid enough to take him off our hands. Yes, he's overpaid because he hasn't been on the mound enough. But you can't say that he's not a good pitcher when he's there. His highest ERA season since 2000 was 3.72 last year, and he was absolutely destroying the league before he got injured last year.
  21. You never know with Wilkerson. The Nats have a ton of OFs. Jose Guillen is gonna be in RF next year. They have Ryan Church who has outproduced Wilkerson in limited time this year. Then they still have Sledge, Wilson, Byrd and others. The other position Wilkerson can play is 1B, and Nick Johnson is there. I think they let Wilson go this offseason, but they will look for a big bat this offseason. If they can't get a proven OF bat, I think they happily hold on to Wilkerson.
  22. If Kerry is healthy enough to make all his starts next year, he will have a good season. He's too good of a pitcher not too. Still, I don't think the Cubs pickup the option. I think best case scenario is Wood starts 28-30 games, has a good-to-great season, and the deal gets restructured (extension lowering the base of 07). Deep down, I don't think that either the Cubs or Kerry want to part ways.
  23. That's a solid plan B. Giles should be Plan A. If you can't get him, get 2 solid players of the caliber you mentioned.
  24. There's gonna be a lot of competition for Giles. Both LA teams, St Louis, and his current San Diego team are gonna bid high for him. I think it takes at least $12M/season and probably 4 years. And there's no way the Cubs are signing Giles, Furcal, and Nomar. I'd take Giles if I only had the choice of one. And I'd go with Cedeno at SS, Walker at 2B, and anyone but Pie in CF.
  25. Not a bad move. Dempster was absolutely fabulous in the closer's role this year. I doubt he'll be this good at any point over the next 3 years, but he should still be in the top 1/2 of closers in baseball at the least. I don't see the 3 years as being that big of a deal. The Cubs got out of the Hawkins situation, and he's a little older. BJ Ryan would have been nice, but it's not gonna happen. The Cubs can still get a pretty good setup man (Howry, Romero, Riske, Mota, etc) for just over the cost per year they would have had to pay Ryan or Wagner.
