  1. Loney was just sent down. I guess Choi is staying.
  2. Is he wearing his sunglasses? Still day time in Arizona.
  3. Isn't Hairston batting 2nd? Not saying it's a good move, but there's a big difference bunting with Hairston than with Walker.
  4. I'd give Marshall the nod simply for his ability to not give up baserunners. He's always been efficient, because he won't walk hitters. Pittsburgh would be a good team for him to face for his 1st ML start. Guzman has excellent control also, but it hasn't been the same since his most recent injury. The most important thing early on is to get a guy thru 5 innings pretty with a decent pitch count, and Marshall has the best ability to do that.
  5. Brewers make a late change, subbing Nelson Cruz in LF for El Caballo. Can you please refrain from the Hawk Harelson refrences? OK, they gone!! HA! That's brilliant. That's why you're the best writer out there.
  6. Let it drop, boys.
  7. So crappy he won 18 games last year while posting a sub-4.00 ERA on a .500 ballclub. I know win totals are not reflective of pure talent, but the bar is pretty high when an above average pitcher is considered crappy. Capuano is 27. Just finished his 1st full season. He's a pretty darn good pitcher. He's doesn't overwhelm, but there's plenty of room for him to improve on what was an above average season.
  8. Matos is actually killing the ball so far in his few games with the O's this spring. He's doing a lot better than Patterson who is starting to slump (down to .222/.270).
  9. to bad thats all he can do, whats his career BA and OBP? But I would still rather have his potential over Arroyo. You have to basically have had a career before you can look at things like career BA and OBP. The kid just turned 24. Our very own Derrek Lee had a .206 AVG and a .263 OBP at the age of 23, and the stats would be pretty similar for his "career" up to that point with Wily Mo. Sammy Sosa had a .260/.317 at the age of 23. And that was his highest OBP to date. Sosa only hit 8 HR's that year. Is it safe to say that what these guys did at 23 is not an accurate assessment of how their careers turned out? I don't see Wily Mo ever taking walks. Of course, I didn't see it with young Sammy either. Still, I think he's gonna be a guy that puts up numbers similar to a poor man's Andruw Jones.
  10. 1. What will the Astros get out of the 3-4-5 spots of the rotation? 2. Is Preston Wilson healthy and will he be able to produce? 3. Will Berkman's knee stay healthy? 4. How much does Biggio have left? 5. Which Morgan Ensberg will show up? Does he have Hidalgo every-other-year disease? 6. Can Everett and Ausmus hit at all? The Astros have a lot of questions. They'll have a very good defense and a good bullpen. But they have questions at nearly every spot in their lineup (except when Berkman's healthy). Clemens' loss is huge. Pettitte is not as good as he pitched last year.
  11. Marshall's the best pitcher in the minor league system. He will win the competition and start April 15.
  12. NL only, you may have an argument with Furcal. Not many good SS in the NL. But I'll think you'll be able to pick him up at 10-11 if needed.
  13. I'm not even sure the Bears really need another WR. Mush is signed to a long term contract, Gage established himself as a good possession receiver towards the end of the season, Berrian was our BEST offensive player once he returned, Bradley was coming on strong before his injury, and the Bears are high on Airese Currie (although he's still a big ?). Although the position was an overall weakness for a large portion of the season, it could easily be a position of strength for next year. However a lot of that hinges on the health of Bradley and the team's assesment of Currie. I could be mistaken, but I don't think there are many teams (if any) teams who carry 6 receivers (although Berrian can double as a return man as well). Health provided the team may be better served upgrading elsewhere. IMO, the Bears points of emphasis need to be TE (draft), OL (youth and depth via draft), OLB (draft), a backup Qb (via FA), and CB (someone who doesn't make as many mistakes as Tillman). Tight end, CB, and a backup QB should be top priorities, where the other two are more for adding depth. I disagree with your assessment of Gage. He's a bad football player.
  14. did you say something? I was...er..distracted by a photo =P~ I don't mean to be hatin' Goony....but is the photo necessary? It means I can only skim your posts if I'm reading the board while I work. I don't want somebody to walk by my computer with a photo like that on the screen. Seconded. Great picture, but I post at work and it's a little dangerous. And spare me the lecture about posting at work. It's been a long winter for Cubs fans. Oh, and Go BU Braves! You guys should get new jobs.
  15. I don't care about what any of the older guys are doing. I do though, when it comes to the kids, though, fighting for jobs. We all saw what bad springs did for Hill and Choi. I just fear this organization will see a bad outing and dwell on it and completely right off the kid.
  16. "Man, that HR really got us going. When Gooz gave up the runs in the bottom half of the inning, man....we had that HR to fall back on. It gave Guzman the chance to relax, man, with a 4-run lead going out there. Man, Neifi saved us, know what I'm sayin'?"
  17. Because the steroids are behind him and he's 35 now. That's pretty much it. He had much more to prove last year. I think injuries could be a problem with him.
  18. Somebody has to want to be in this rotation. Right now it's Zambrano, Maddux and nobody is stepping up. Angel usually has better control.
  19. Dude, it's ST and be's batted all over the place. I doubt you can read into it at all. AFterall we have 4 2nd basemen playing in the same line up today, and I doubt that's an indication of what's to come. Four?
  20. Uh oh, he'll be starting at 2B in no time!
  21. Watch for huge increases in HRs from. Brad Wilkerson. Ryan Howard, Jim Thome, Bobby Crosby, Scott Rolen, Jeff Francouer, Magglio Ordonez and Barry Bonds should all see huge increases with full seasons (if they are healthy) as opposed to last year. Carlos Beltran Watch for decreases from. Soriano Ensberg Giambi Dellucci Jermaine Dye Tony Clark I actually expect Andruw to keep hitting. 40-45 would be a safe bet, 50 again possible. Thome, I'd guess 20-30, depending on health. Hafner may hit 40 this year. Edmonds and Sheff are aging. Edmonds dropped 13 HRs from 04-05. Sheff has dropped a few each year the last 3. I'd expect 25-30 from both.
  22. Ditto. Assuming you have a Utility position.
  23. The math isn't 100% accurate, but pretty close and as close as we can figure when comparing the two. The point of all of this is to illustrate the importance of defense and the fact that these two players are pretty close to each other in value while the general opinion of fans would lead one to believe Walker is much better. Isn't it also assuming that offense and defense are equal if you conclude they are of similar value? I think offense is at least twice as important as defense. And getting on base (where Walker and Neifi have the largest gap in production) is more valuable than just regular production. The last 2 especially so when you look at the team makeup of the Cubs. Sure for the Yankees, Walker and Neifi would be closer in value, because they have less of a need for offense. But for a team with an average at best offense, and well below average OBP....Walker has much more value than Neifi Perez.
  24. I got you all beat. Corey Patterson, Nic Jackson, Jason Dubois
