    1. Lee 2. Zambrano 3. Ramirez 4. Soriano 5. Marmol Don't understand the amount of Theriot love. I really like DeRosa. He should be getting the attention Theriot has. Understand the Wood love, but I'm kinda indifferent to him in 2007. The prospect whore in me wanted to list Pie, Marmol, Hill, Marshall, and Soto.

    Looks like there a chance that Guillen might be available and another indication that Renteria could be moved. My guess is that the Braves will let Jones go, trade Renteria and sign Teixeira to a long-term deal. Escobar will take over at SS, and perhaps Willie Harris will play CF. But, frankly, he's nothing particularly special. I think the Cubs could probably acquire Renteria for Pie or pitching. I think RF is a bigger hole than SS. Theriot isn't great by any means, but I think he does enough well to be hidden in the 8th hole all of next year. I'd trade for Renteria, but wouldn't give up Pie for him. I'd probably look to trade Marshall and Atkins for him. My #1 trade target would be Brad Hawpe. Not sure if he would be available, but they have a ton of offense, and more on the horizon (Koshansky, Baker, Stewart) and could use some pitching and a CF. I would offer Pie, Hart, and maybe even Veal for Hawpe.

    I'd give Arod 10-years if that's what it would take. Seriously, who would honestly care about 2017 if Arod puts up his career numbers for the first 5-6 years of that deal (not to mention if he puts up another season like this one)? I said in the other thread, I wouldn't increase payroll by $15M for 1-year of Bonds. But I would easily increase the payroll by $20-30M for ARod, who assumingly would play SS.

    That's the key. If the Cubs win tomorrow we could very well make this happen before the Cincy series. I think the Braves have a great chance to win the game tomorrow and Monday the Cards have Wainwright going against Bush. We could gain a ton of ground in a hurry! Tomorrow isn't just key in terms of numbers in the division race, but it's important in that Z's running out of time to show whether or not he's going to have it together. The Cubs could very well go to the playoffs with Z continuing to be unreliable, but they're screwed once they get there. Tomorrow will show us a lot more than how quickly the Cubs will or won't wrap it up. Winning tomorrow would do a lot for the Cubs confidence. They've won with Marquis pitching like crap. Won with Hill not having his best stuff. Odds are they aren't scoring 9-13 runs tomorrow. Zambrano shutting down the Pirates has to give the team a feeling of invincibility this late in the season. Last home game. Last chance for the fans to see their team. Ace on the mound. This is a game Z has to win. And yes, I know it sounds cliche.

    It's nowhere near over. Brewers go against JoJo Reyes and the Cards who have completely closed shop and are at home after tomorrow. The Cubs go against one of the top 15 pitchers this year and 2 teams that have given them trouble in recent history on the road after tomorrow. 2 1/2 would make it a lot more comfortable going into a stretch where 4-3 will be tough.

    Quietly. Chipper Jones has had a better season than Prince Fielder and my vote for NL MVP, Matt Holliday.

    Nice that the big boys have stepped it up. Cubs could finish with 3 guys over a .880 OPS, in a season that has possibly be a slight disappointment for all three.

    I don't see why not. He got that this year. Clemens is doing the exact same thing and he got 20+.

    It will happen, but not gonna happen before Cincy. Brewers will go 4-2 over the next 6 days. Cubs will go 4-1.

    2 things I don't understand. 1. Why are people even remotely concerned about Bonds' defense? If there was ever a case of offense far outweighing any defensive liabilities, Bonds is clearly it. Even at 44, he would be a lock for a .975 OPS, and that would be his lowest in about 15 years. 2. Where are the Cubs getting the near $15-18M next year it would take to sign Bonds? It's not a bad idea. I could care less about about the black cloud that follows him. He would help the Cubs win games. But the Cubs probably do. The Cubs probably care about his defense. They probably care about his age. They probably care about his salary, especially when paired with what will already be a 110M payroll. There have been 0 signs pointing to the Cubs increasing payroll by that much.

    I've absolutely loved what I have seen from Hart this year. I see no reason he shouldn't be in the running for the 5th starter's role next year along with Marshall, Gallagher, and perhaps Prior. With all the capable arms close to the majors and close in ability, the Cubs should be able to get a 5th starter and 11th/12th bullpen pitcher out of the group. There should also be no excuse NOT to package a couple of them for an upgrade in RF or SS.

    Wow. Johan laid an absolute egg. Hudson lost it in the 8th. I'm probably done. Down nearly 70 with just 2 starts left. Disappointing season, if I don't make a miraculous comeback. My offense is nowhere to be found.

    didn't freaking Wily Tavares make a living off the Cubs for a couple years too? Juan Pierre did well for LA too against the Cubs, IIRC. The Cubs can't get out speedy, black, slap hitting CFs.

    Against lefties: .314/.390/.587/.977 (121 AB). Of course, he was even better against righties: .363/.434/.683/1.117 (262 AB). Would he make a bigger impact than Kendall for what the Cubs need to beat a lefty? Also, are the lefties the Pirates throwing hard throwers or do they change speeds well? Jason Kendall is doing better against righties than lefties this season - neither of his splits compare to Soto's #s in the minors. I think Soto is a better option against all pitchers, he has a good approach (not as good as Kendall's) and much, much more power. Maholm is good with his command changing speeds. Duke has better stuff and throws harder. Neither has been that good this season, though (Duke especially). Don't know who the third lefty for Pittsburgh is. Isn't Gorzellany going Sunday?

    03 was awful. Prior was abused more that year than Z has ever been, surprisingly. But the Cubs were 4 outs away from the world series! Yeah, in hindsight, 2003 may have been the worst year in Cubs history. 5 outs, but who's counting. I knew that. Don't know why I typed 4.

    It's not hard at all to fill the role. Nobody though, is gonna be as good as Marmol. But the Cubs have to weigh their options. If the Cubs can get a huge upgrade in the OF will it be enough to overcome the likely downgrade in the rotation and bullpen? I think it's worth a shot.

    Hey look. My team's not hitting! David Wright is carrying me. Sizemore is still one of the top 10 scorers in the league, but he's been a disappointment in a lot of respects. Morneau has disappointed in the 2nd half. I knew Sheffield was only a matter of time, before he wasn't the league's leading OF. My boys need to break out offensively this weekend.

    At least they've had a WS victory in my lifetime. They were also in the NLCS, and were a good Barry Bonds throw away from getting to the 93 series the last time they had a winning team.

    Ouch, hadn't noticed. I started Hamels on a pitch count, and he's given up 2 ERs on RBI groundouts. Pull the damn IF in.

    3 days rest move isn't working out so well. Look for more tomorrow. You don't shorten your starters' rest when they've already been pitching 7 months straight on at least 4 days, including spring training.

    This topic has been discussed in a couple threads. I'd agree with Marmol being a starter. Again, you have Dempster close. Howry stay in his role. If you bring Kerry Wood back, either he or Wuertz (who has succeeded in this role before) takes over the 7th inning role. Stretch Marmol out in the spring. Either he shows he becomes a solid starter and stays in the rotation, he doesn't and goes back to his current role or Prior and/or some of the prospects show they are ML ready and he goes back to his role ala Papelbon.
