  1. Huh? Why wouldn't they? I guess I don't understand the point. "Hey, you know who we should try to trade for? Papelbon." "Agreed. We could use him. Let's call the Phillies in a month to see how they feel about it." Obviously that's oversimplified, but I don't understand why a front office would talk about trading for a guy internally when you don't even know if he's available or what it would take externally. You have scouts checking players out all the time. But there's really nothing gained beyond "do we want him or not?" from the internal talks. And I don't know how anyone would know until it was at the point of calling the Phillies.
  2. Internal discussions always seemed weird to me. Do teams really have discussions on who they are thinking about thinking of trading for? How do these discussions get out into the public in the "internal" phase?
  3. Can still play 3 games a week with Ross catching the other 3! :good:
  4. IDK. Maybe that was an overstatement. Javy had to play last year because the team sucked and had to see if he could snap out of it. I guess I'm not really sure how I'd handle things on a winning team. Does not compute yet.
  5. Left freaking field. No way he is a worse fielder than Coghlan. Gary Sheffield started out as a SS afterall. Could be, but I think Baez is a way better infielder than Bryant and that there wouldn't be that much difference between them in LF. I think the best configuration (so long as Castro is playing SS) would be Bryant in LF, Baez at 2B, Russell to 3B. But it's close between Russell and Baez. They could easily switch. Just let Joe get his hands on all of them. Rotate em around, give a guy an extra day off. We just played 17 straight. That's going to catch up to our rookies. Between LF, 3rd and 2nd we can get Baez enough ABs to justify it and give Russell a day off every now and then. Starlin, too. I don't think days off are really necessary for 23 year olds. They've been playing everyday their entire lives/careers. Plus, I don't like messing with the young guys (pause!) unless they are really struggling, I'm talking worse than Baez was last year.
  6. Pretty clear that Bryant has SARS. We can never have nice things.
  7. He's terrible. I wondered how Rosival could play over anyone. Now I see.
  8. I probably would have traded Taj for a wing this year. But I understand wanting to see what they had in Mirotic first. Frankly, this isn't a big man's game anymore. Having a great front court hasn't helped the Bulls win anything. I think Gasol, Noah, Mirotic and a rookie is enough up front. Hell, the Cavs beat the Bulls with just 2 bigs playing, only 1 at a time for the most part, and all they did was offensive rebound. The Bulls have needed another guy to create his shot and hit open shots for years.
  9. Why would anyone trade a 25 year old #1 starter making $512,000 with 3 arbitration years left? It doesn't matter whether you're contending or rebuilding when you have an asset that valuable, you don't trade him unless you're trying to make a deal for someone like Trout. Why? Because such a player would net a huge return and he is still just a young pitcher that could fall apart tomorrow. If you aren't good and you don't have the resources to get better in a hurry, it is at least worth considering. Yeah, there's no doubt they'd consider trading Gray, but it would probably take a lot more than the Cubs are willing to give up. If they could get 3-4 good, cheap, young players for their 1 good, cheap, young player...they do it 100 times out of 100 because they aren't going anywhere.
  10. Have the Cubs faced Burnett this year? Seems odd considering they've played the Pirates 75% of the games so far.
  11. 6 straight, and they've beaten 4 guys who are really good pitchers.
  12. Good call on the OP. Reddick and Clippard is about as perfect as any realistic scenario could be for this season. Exactly what the Cubs need (LF and RP). Guys who play for a team that probably isn't going anywhere and aren't in the future plans of that team. Exactly what I'd imagine the Cubs would like in a couple guys who aren't old and aren't on long-term, bad contracts. And maybe most importantly, a couple guys who'd be good fits on the current roster, but won't require the Cubs to trade a ton of major minor league assets. Torres, McKinney, and Underwood would be too much, IMO (and too little if Gray is involved, which I don't see any way he would be). But McKinney and Underwood would probably get the ball rolling pretty far. Of course, the As had McKinney, so I don't know if there is a ton of interest there. I'd probably try to keep McKinney and dangle Alcantara, but he's not hitting. I don't think it'd require Baez, nor would I think the As would be interested in a player like Javy. Underwood seems like the type of arm the As have typically valued though, so I'd imagine he'd be a part of any deal, as he's about the healthiest, good pitching prospect the Cubs have.
  13. What's the latest on Pierce Johnson?
  14. Yeah, so hopefully Colin Hartman is prepared to spend another season playing a lot of center when Bryant gets winded and/or gets in foul trouble. I thought Davis was the only one who actually got cited by the cops. Lesson to be learned - don't smoke your dope in the dorms when you are an IU basketball player. Yeah, Davis was the one who had the weed. HMP was with him at the time though, and again it's not the first time for either so I think they'd had enough.
  15. Dunleavy? He's a free agent, who I don't see being brought back.
  16. Tennessee's lineup is loaded. When Hanneman starts hitting, it's going to be even tougher. BTW, the Cubs have Bryant, Soler, and Russell in the majors, but have a pretty good looking 2nd tier lineup in the high levels of the minors. LF- Hanneman CF- Almora RF- McKinney 3B- Villanueva SS- Baez 2B- Alcantara 1B- Vogelbach C- Schwarber All other than Alcantara, are having pretty solid seasons overall, with the last 2 guys murdering everything. I wonder if the Cubs will really "go for it" this year. Looks like they will compete for a wildcard spot as is. But they could use a LF, another starter, and maybe another bullpen arm. It'll be interesting to see how many of these guys they'd be willing to trade and how much they could get in return from this group + maybe a couple of the arms.
  17. I knew once he pulled out his dong, he would want to keep using it. Just had to get the first time out of the way.
  18. Gonna be so spoiled this week. On TV Tuesday and Wednesday night. All weekend on TV here, 5 games in a week is exciting.
  19. That was [expletive] goaltending. LOL.
  20. That's not a foul because LeBron stumbled.
  21. Can we not use the Brooks/Hinrich backcourt?
