Well...ok...you're acting like Kyle Long turned out to be [expletive] though. I think hes been above average, but I still have a problem with taking a Guard in the first round of a draft for a variety of reasons. Especially when you have other players that are universally considered higher ranked. We're paying the sins for Angelo being a turd in the draft, but Phil hasn't exactly been the remedy. Sure he's had a few hits the last 3 years (Alshon, Long(?)), but to date he hasn't found 1 good defensive player in the draft and we're still searching for a Safety since Mike Brown. Kyle Long is an interesting situation for a lot of reason. I think part of the reason he was drafted was because of his ability to potentially play LT at some point, and OG seems to be more important than OT in this scheme. But he could be one of the top NFL guards as soon as this year. And I agree, I typically don't want to draft a guard in the 1st round. Especially one that's not in the Hutchinson, Iupati, DeCastro, Warmack, Cooper class of elite top 15 type talents. But you can't fault the pick if Long turns out to be an elite player. FWIW, if I were the Bears GM, I'd probably have waited until the 2nd and taken Larry Warford who went to Detroit early 3rd. My 1st pick would have been between Trufant, Sharif Floyd or Alec Ogletree, with edge to Ogletree probably because of the need last year.
