  1. You forgot about Wade Miller, who I'm hoping with regain his form upon his return in late May. He could be a big boost to the rotation.
  2. I think it's safe to say we can uninvite Mr. Watson. Not good.
  3. Inside the park HR for Brandon Wood on a wind-aided shot
  4. Great story, thanks for sharing it. I think we all get caught up in players' on-field performances, or lack there of, and forget all the good that most of these guys do. Kerry has gotten a bum rap for so long, like it's his fault that he has gotten hurt, that I really hope he turns it around this season so he can remain a Cub. Because, when healthy, he's still one of the best hurlers to watch.
  5. thats what i thought too but his spring #'s are quite good. he must have regained some if not all of his lost velocity. williamson is a big risk imo and has pretty much said he wants to close again anyway so why not deal him? Why in the world do you want to trade an effective relief pitcher in Williamson? Why weaken your teams strength? Keep Williamson! You have Williamson, Howry, Eyre, and Dempster and it's a 5-6 inning game... because his health is a major issue. it's a gamble but at least he's worth something now. with ardsma & novoa & perhaps wuretz, it might be worth the risk to trade him and get something of value instead of waiting until he blows out his elbow. Okay so what happens if Dempster has trouble closing? Williamson is a closer and can step right in to that role. Keep him. So can Howry.
  6. Well, at least it's better than losing to the Sox
  7. As much as I agree with the love for A-RAM, my love grows by the AB for NEIFI!
  8. I'm all for SAC bunts with a runner on first and no one out, but you don't bunt with a runner in scoring position with Murton up. What, did Dusty read some book on SACing your way to victory in the offseason?
  9. NEIFI!!!! And to think I was about to complain for the Cubs taking a total of 4 pitches this inning...
  10. Come on Cubs...let's get some runs! I know it's only ST, but I truly HATE to lose to the WS. Not to mention I have to see my Sox-loving father-in-law tonight.
  11. Should I be concerned that right after I turned the game on, Thome went yard?
  12. Sure, I would have liked to get more power than JJ in right field, but I disagree that the Cubs have a weak hitting lineup. We have two all-stars in MVP-candidate D-Lee and A-Ram (who looks ready to have a breakout year), one of the better leadoff hitters in the game and one of the better hitting catchers. Add in Murton and hopefully Walker, and I like this lineup. Baseball America tends to disagree. What do you guys think?
  13. When are we opening the bank and signing D-Lee to an extension?
  14. He is but it's ST and still early. Relievers take some time to get zoned in, at least that's what I thought. I thought Howry was having a nice spring with 7 shutout innings before today?
  15. We're not trying to define whether a pitcher is good or not. We are talking about what defines the best in the game. How can wins not factor into the equation? Wins are the ultimate determinant of success, are they not? Next to ERA, WHIP and BAA, how else do you want to judge the elite? Those stats can be used to argue the value of a good pitcher. In fact, I've used them to defend Wood and Prior plenty. But if you are talking about the best in the game you need to produce wins. The best pitchers learn how to finish what they started, and Z is right there, but he has to take the next step to become elite.
  16. Was Clemens top 10 last season? A 1.87 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 211+ innings is what sets the bar for the rest of the top 10. Too bad he had crappy run support and the TEAM held him to a 13-8 record. First off, I hate to be arguing this point because I really like Z. All I've been trying to say is that he hasn't proven to be consistent enough to produce the Ws required to be among the elite 10 pitchers in baseball. He clearly has the stuff to be one of the top 5, but to me, you have to win to get there. Sure, Clemens had a tremendous year and didn't win much since he got zero run support, but then again his league-leading ERA was a good 1.5 runs better than Z. He also has 12 seasons of at least 17 wins. Z finished tied for 24 in wins last year. Does that strike you as being elite?
  17. If wins were as important as you claim, you should know that Carlos's career high is 16, not 14. I do know that Zambrano's career high is 16, but if you read my post, I said he has averaged 14 wins a year. Hey, I'm not trying to say Z isn't an ace pitcher, but wins do matter when you are separating the top 10 pitchers in the league from everyone else. I don't anybody would settle for 14 wins a year from our ace pitcher. Z hasn't reached his potential yet, and hopefully he does it this year.
  18. someone just get me a gun so I can shoot myself and not have listen to this argument one more freaking time. Maybe our definitions of elite pitchers differs. I consider elite pitchers to be among the top 10 in baseball, and yes, an important aspect of that is wins. I know the argument about the value of ERA, WHIP and BAA (because I've used it plenty to justify Prior and Wood), but shouldn't elite pitchers (who are maximizing their ability) deliver more than 14 wins a season, which is what Z has done the past 3 years). Z is an all-star pitcher and our #1 ace, but he still has to gain consistency to become elite in my book. Hopefully that happens this year.
  19. Don't get me wrong, I like Z as much as the next guy, but shouldn't elite pitchers win more than 14 games? We know he has the stuff for greatness (as evidenced by his stellar ERA) but wouldn't you agree he has yet to put it all together?
  20. Sorry, I thought they were two different topics. This one deals with why these problems seem to keep happening, while the other talks about what we do with the current staff. My bad.
  21. Not yet IMO. To be elite you have to deliver 18+ wins on a consistent basis and Z's best to date is 16. He can't blow easy Ws like in last season's opener.
