  1. I don't know about you, but after a .356 average in Iowa last season, I think that Pie has done everything he can in the minors. He now needs to see and get used to major league pitching. But he's been successful at every level along the way, so I don't see why it won't be solid in the bigs.
  2. I think there is something to be said for the day baseball factor. We're the only team in baseball playing as many day games, which in the dead of summer and after a night out on the town, can be hell on a player. It's not that difficult to identify why teams usually win the World Series, they get hot at the absolutely perfect time. Look at the Sox from 05. None of the experts predicted them to even make the WS, let alone win it. Yet the road the hottest playoff pitching I've seen in quite some time (and a bit of luck) to the title. If the Cubs had a couple of key hitters (Soriano, Ram, D-Lee) get hot last fall, there's no reason why we couldn't have been facing the Red Sox for the title. The same holds true this season.
  3. It's easy to complain, but much more difficult to actually suggest alternative solutions. How many GMs can you say do a consistently good job? Like most, Hendry has made his share of blunders, but he also landed us two all-star players in Lee and Ram for players who aren't even in baseball anymore. And if he brings the Cubs a World Series title, I don't care how much money he spends to do it.
  4. Can we agree to ban all of this 100 year blabber on this board at least....I don't think any of us is approaching 100, so it's pointless to mention it every stinking time the Cubs are mentioned.
  5. Well, at least it turned out to be an exciting game....Great start for K-Fuk, Z and Marmol....the bullpen let us down, oh yeah, and it would be nice if we could hit in the first 8 innings too.
  6. Come on...let's do it again! Get on Riot and let Soriano drive you home with a BOMB!
  7. Guess everyone will be calling for Marmol to close now...
  8. Theriot is the brightest example of Cubs management incompetence. He's a horrible SS, whom, 2 years ago, people were wondering if he had enough to be a competent utility man, and now he's the everyday leadoff man. He fills the position that most needed replacement going into the season, and management did nothing. Pitchers are just going to throw him strike after strike because he's not a threat to do anything with most pitches. Through no fault of his own, he's the current symbol for all that has ailed the Cubs of the Andy/Hendry ERA. What would you have done to improve the situation? Trade 5 or 6 players for Roberts? Trade for Greene who has a worse OBP than Theroit? Something else?
  9. Come on DeRo....give the ball a ride and let's get some runs!
  10. Is Sheets throwing lights out, or have we forgotten how to swing the bats?
  11. The Reds are honoring Nuxhall today. Harang is pitching wearing a Nuxhall no. 41 jersey. Who's Nuxhall?
  12. The thunder might be pounding down outside with the rain falling, but I'm as excited about Opening Day now as I was when I was a little kid. I can't wait to see the Cubs take the field. All the talk of the offseason, predictions and spring training banter is over....it counts now. We've got a memorable--and dare I say it historic-- season of baseball ahead of us this year boys! To get us in the mood, what's your favorite opening day memory? I loved the first day onslaught against the Mets a few years ago, and of course Tuffy's 3 HR game. GO CUBS!
  13. What happened to Kenny Williams emphatically saying that either Crede or Fields would be traded by opening day? Guess there isn't much of a market for a guy with a bad back and a sub 200 BA.
  14. Man, after today's game Pie is only batting .340....I'm about ready to jump off the ledge!
  15. I'm sure Lou won't hesitate to make the switch if Demp or Marquis blows. It's not like we are releasing Lieber.
  16. Boy, Demp really demonstrated that he should be in the rotation by laying an egg today. Not sure why we'd take a guy who has started his entire career and put him in the pen, while turning our closer into a starter?
  17. For those of us reading from work, was DeRo's bomb fair...ie a HR?
  18. Since he hasn't even started his first full season in the majors, I would say the answer is an emphatic NO. I don't understand the concern everyone has for a 23-year-old prospect who has succeeded at every level? Now, he may need time to adjust to major league pitching, but the same can be said for the vast majority of prospects. In the meantime, he'll still give us solid defense and speed. Let's all give the guy a chance.
  19. What's Cedeno actually done to prove that he's a MLB caliber starter though? what has Ryan Theriot done? For starters, he led the Cubs in SB last year and also proved he could hit a little...unlike Cedeno.
