Speaking of Cubs pitching prospects, do we have any updates on Horton? -
It's a low bar to clear, but he has been one of the Cubs most consistent hitters (albeit without much slug). He is a good hitter, just not THE guy to build an offense around.

Her voice is grating to me. I don't question her knowledge and I think she is probably a technically ok broadcaster, but I just can't get used to the voice.

I agree that Lavine isn't going to stop the tank. They probably aren't going to be a top lottery team, but they should still be able to finish Bottom 10 to keep their 2025 first rounder. My bigger issue with keeping Lavine is that he would take opportunities away from other younger guys who "might" matter when/if the team is decent again. I would rather let guards like Coby and Ayo take the reigns and just see what happens.

At this point, I don't think anyone can be too upset if/when the Cubs go that direction. At the same time though, Brewer is a complete nothing whose performance can easily be replaced by nearly anyone on the AAA roster or any recent DFA pitcher. There is no reason whatsoever to hang onto him.

Seems like a legitimate (non-quote) injury, even if it's just more of a small, nagging thing. Counsell said Hendricks' back had flared up yesterday and they thought it was better today, but he wasn't able to pitch through it. It may be a convenient excuse for poor performance, but an injury nonetheless.

As bad as the Catcher position has been, it takes a LOT of guys playing poorly to end up with an offense this bad. Good teams can overcome a few players not hitting, but the Cubs have more than a few. Swanson has been bad overall outside of a short hot streak. Nico hasn't hit anywhere near as well as he needs to if he is going to be the long term answer at 2B. Morel was supposed to hit enough to make up for his glove, but hasn't been hitting at all. I don't know what makes nearly an entire offense perform below expectations, but if you listen to Steve Fifer from Milwaukee (who was on the Score last weekend), he blames Counsell and says he isn't a good offensive manager. I'm certainly not buying that a manager has that much impact and I think his assessment was more sour grapes. Ultimately, this team's performance has to fall on Hoyer. It is simply unacceptable for any team, let alone one with the payroll of this Cubs team, to be playing such awful baseball.

Ah, the old secret GM signal which indicates that the Cubs maybe might possibly be willing to consider selling if they continue to lose and aren't in the playoff race and the right deal presents itself.

I have no idea where to rate Illinois going into the season. The talent is there, but there are a lot of questions about how an almost entirely brand new roster will mesh together. They could be anywhere from a Top 15ish team that competes for the Big 10 Title to a bubble team that misses the NCAA tournament.

I can't argue with that. That's why I prefaced my post with being tired of hearing the bad luck angle. If you ALWAYS have bad luck, it probably isn't luck at all.

I know everyone is tired of hearing it, but there was some bad luck (and defense) in there again too. Hendricks certainly wasn't great and he gave up a rocket of a grand slam, but it never should have got to that.
