No doubt they are the same people who are standing and cheering at every Cubs game as if it's the 7th game of the World Series.

Did anyone listen to the game on WGN. If so, is it true that Ron Santo went off on the Cubs and called for changes, both managerial and with the players?

I just saw the highlights on Baseball Tonight, nice catch. I'm happy for Corey and hope he can keep it up.

So if we went out and bought the best player at every position, we were expected to win the series because our payroll is $100 million more than the next team, you would feel just as satisfied with that title as if we did it with an intelligent budget, good role players and the right mix of power and avg? Not even a little bit of the shine would come of the victory? I wouldn't care either way, BUT I would prefer to win with a likeable group of guys (a team unlike the 2004 team). Whether the Cubs buy those players or develop them, it really doesn't matter.

This is the word that Boers & Bernstein use to describe Dusty Baker's attitude toward the outcome of games. I think this perfectly describes one of the major flaws in the current coaching staff. They have the players believing that games are won or lost based on luck, magic, and the baseball gods, rather than by the actions of the players themselves. It is the belief that everything is happening to the Cubs and they can't control the "breaks." Anyway, I just wanted to post this because I think it sums the coaching staff (and the team) up perfectly. A team adopts the style of its coach, and unfortunately this is Dusty Baker's style.

With Neifi not in the starting line-up, I think the patented double switch is all but guaranteed. Hey I have to give Baker some credit here, he actually used the double switch properly with Dempster yesterday!

That may be true, but the point is that the wins have to go somewhere, so if one team is well below .500 that means their opponents are picking up extra wins. It doesn't really help us for a team to completely tank the 2nd half of the season. I meant that the Cardinals and Astros (or whoever is atop the NL Central standings down the stretch) may have easier opponents than they may have now. My point was that while the Cubs aren't mathematically eliminated at this time, they might as well be. The team isn't good enough to get back in this race. I misunderstood your point then, I completely agree. :?

I feel the same way. Even though it seems early in the season, barring a miracle we have already eliminated ourselves from the playoff race. What's the difference if we finish .500 or 20 games below if we don't make the playoffs either way? If it takes a terrible season in order to rebuild a championship-caliber team, then I'm all for it. Hanging around .500 every year doesn't do anything for me...

In Neifi's post game comments, on two seperate occasions he said "there's nothing we can do." There's the Dusty Baker attitude at its best.

Rumor has it that Dusty was so upset in the post-game press conference that the Cubs PR people had to cut it short.

On the "drunken female fan" incident, I think the fairly obvious explanation was that the girl was underage and the Cubs did not want to take the heat for serving an underage girl. While that is a possibility, I think "fairly obvious" is an overstatement.
