Someone reassure me about Baez... Yes I know that his pattern has been to struggle mightily at each new level before "figuring it out," but his approach seems so completely broken that I'm doubtful he is going to make some minor adjustment that suddenly eliminates his problems. He appears to be completely guessing, pre-determining which pitches he is going to swing at. He takes a fastball right down the middle of the plate, then swings at one 3 feet out of the zone. I realize I am almost certainly overreacting, but he doesn't look like someone who is ready for the major leagues right now. It is also pretty clear that he is over-swinging, but I'm not so worried about that. I'm confident that some combination of coaching and him becoming more comfortable at the plate will help him realize that he doesn't need to put everything he has into every swing. But will that correspond to an improved understanding of the strike zone? As much as I want to see Baez, Bryant, and Soler together in the lineup by mid-April, I'm starting to wonder whether Baez may spend some more time in Iowa next year if he doesn't begin to show signs of improvement over the next few weeks.
