  1. Yeah, I mean it's perfectly normal for a 42 year old player to suddenly be putting up numbers that he hasn't even come close to for 10 years, right?
  2. The Cubs have been +.500 for over two months. There have been about three 2-week stretches of really bad baseball. Outside of that, they’ve been a pretty decent team. I know, “Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln.” But still, more often than not, this has been a pretty fun team to watch when they aren’t in one of their stretches when they go 2-13. When this team is playing well, I can almost convince myself that a couple quality offseason additions might be enough to compete for a Wild Card spot. But then they ultimately go through a stretch where I wonder how they can ever win another game.
  3. Is JD ok? He has missed an awful lot of games this year.
  4. This offseason sure seems like the right time to try to get a Nico extension done. With the team likely being a couple years away from beginning its next serious contention window, that will put them near the end of his arbitration years. It would be great to be able to tack another year or two on the end of that deal now to ensure that he will still be around when the team is (hopefully) ready to compete. What do Nico's peripherals say about whether his performance is sustainable? To me it appears the only question is whether he can stay healthy. The 5% walk rate could be slightly concerning, but it isn't a huge deal with everything else considered.
  5. Just this years playoffs I think. It was reported differently on whatever radio station I had on earlier, but I didn't think it made sense that he would have to miss next year's playoffs too. Most likely just inaccurate reporting.
  6. And he can't play in next year's playoffs either, even once the suspension has been fulfilled?
  7. I'm all for bringing him back once the Tigers are ready to eat a good portion of his remaining salary.
  8. Why AREN'T you capitalizing them???
  9. Oh man, that sucks. Vin Scully was amazing, an iconic voice that will never be replaced.
  10. I think so too. I like the immediate result, but only if the Cubs are serious about trying to resign Contreras, which I don't think they are. This feels more like a misplay by Hoyer. Combined with some of his other recent contract decisions, I have no confidence that he is capable of building a contending team.such as? Villar and Simmons mostly. Not exactly crippling long term deals, but they were unforced mistakes that were completely unnecessary. The Cubs wasted $10 Million when they could have got the same or better performance from guys on minimum salaries. Everyone misses on occasion, but those signings in particular were seemingly obvious overpays from the start and lead me to question Hoyer's ability to target and sign the right players going forward.

  12. But not here. They will extend him. I’m confident. Hoyer's response to an adjacent question certainly didn't inspire my confidence that the Cubs have any interest in an extension..
  13. Good news folks!
  14. I have thought from the beginning that Happ would be likely to stay, although my personal preference would be the opposite - Trade Happ while he is at his maximum value and prior to a big arbitration payday, and re-sign Willson to a long term deal.
  15. Contreras and Happ are both currently in tonight's starting lineup, for what that's worth.
  16. Hosmer to the Red Sox.
  17. T-minus 4 hours until the deadline.
  18. Honestly the Hosmer thing is the only part that has me at all fazed. There's a lot of people yelling 'that's it??' who are not thinking very hard about the actual value Soto is going to put up(thanks to his position/defense) and I'm also wondering where else you're gonna find a willing partner to give up as much pedigree and production as what is in that deal. Same here, I was in the "that seems reasonable" camp until hearing about Hosmer and his negative value.
  19. Hosmer is also going to Washington, in which case I don't think the Nationals got nearly enough in return.
  20. Who wants to break it to them that Happ can't play CF?
  21. And Alzolay assuming he’s still a thing. Some of these guys are going to need to transition to the bullpen. Alzolay might be a good candidate for that.
  22. I don't love trading the one potential long-term bullpen piece on the roster, but Wesneski looks like an interesting return. I assume he goes into the starting rotation immediately, especially if the Cubs find any takers for Smyly.
  23. Ricketts looking for ways to cut costs?
  24. Apparently I haven't watched much golf lately, but when did they start putting the ball trails on every shot?
  25. That sounds great in theory, but I'll eat my hat if it actually happens. Willson's value on the open market will almost certainly be higher than what the Cubs would have had to pay to extend him, and his prospect return isn't enough to justify playing that game if the Cubs actually wanted to bring him back. He will sign elsewhere, just like all the others.
