They also haven't had much luck with pitching in the International market, so maybe this is just a conscious decision to try to address a gap in the system.
I understand the sentiment. I don't generally like the idea of going underslot on a Top 10ish pick, especially for the Cubs who already have a very deep system, but one that is still lacking in top tier prospects. I don't think it's fair to say they didn't pick up any impact players though. We simply don't know. They got 2 of the better pitching prospects in this draft, and it's entirely possible that one of them ends up being a very good Major League starter.
Jackson Ferris may have been born 18 years after the movie release, but I still want him to have the awareness to wear number 86 if/when he ever makes it to Chicago.
It just sucks to suffer through an awful season to obtain a Top 10 draft pick and then spend it on a non-Top 10 talent. It's no Hayden Simpson, but there were better players available.
I know Schwindel was a good story last year, but there is no need for him to be on the roster for the second half of the season. The Cubs gave him a shot, but it is pretty clear that he isn't the answer at 1B. Rivas probably isn't the answer either, but the Cubs might as well let him play nearly every day to at least find out whether he might be a useful piece going forward.
Ownership is completely on board with the plan for this season, so nobody is going to get fired. Whatever you may think about Ross' in-game managerial skills, firing him would be a bad look. This team clearly has a roster problem more than a manager problem. My bigger concern is that I have zero trust in Hoyer to identify the right players once the team is ready to compete. His misses have been very concerning. I would prefer to move on from him sooner than later, but that simply isn't going to happen.
It's more sad they have more talent both in the short and long terms. Of course, they're still the worst team in the division regardless. They would be in 3rd place in the NL Central Or better, considering the schedule difficulty.
Hey, why not take 3 minutes to overturn a call that could have been overturned in 10 seconds? It's not like we're over the 2 hour mark in the 3rd inning or anything.
I don't want any part of Rodon with his injury history. Obviously he is a great pitcher when healthy, and he is probably worth the risk for a team that is one piece away, but I am too afraid of the Cubs getting burnt by injuries and bad contracts at this stage in the rebuild.
Beth Mowins is fine. Sutcliffe is awful, though. I was gonna say, what’s wrong with Beth Mowins? She’s solid. Technically solid maybe, but I always get a PGA Tour broadcast vibe with her, just very low key.
