  1. Not hindsight at all, as I was saying this after the 8th, but pushing Alzolay beyond an inning there was a mistake. We know he can pitch multiple innings, but the guy hasn't pitched in MLB in forever. Let him get out of his first game back feeling good after a scoreless inning.
  2. I'm firmly in the smoke and mirrors camp.
  3. With the pitch clock in place, can we get rid of the extra innings runner now? As much as I have come around on most of the other changes, I still hate the extra innings runner as much as I did on Day 1.
  4. Too soon to anoint Wesneski the Arrieta of the "next great Cubs team"?
  5. Oh, it's probably just one of the 50ish games per year where one or both of the Cubs primary commentary team isn't on the broadcast.
  6. I'm glad I didn't waste a single minute of my Saturday evening watching this one. It looks like Smyly was the only bright spot. It's just too bad he couldn't have had this run a month earlier.
  7. Getting 6 scoreless out of Assad + Rucker is quite an unlikely feat.
  8. Yeah, I mean it's perfectly normal for a 42 year old player to suddenly be putting up numbers that he hasn't even come close to for 10 years, right?
  9. The Cubs have been +.500 for over two months. There have been about three 2-week stretches of really bad baseball. Outside of that, they’ve been a pretty decent team. I know, “Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln.” But still, more often than not, this has been a pretty fun team to watch when they aren’t in one of their stretches when they go 2-13. When this team is playing well, I can almost convince myself that a couple quality offseason additions might be enough to compete for a Wild Card spot. But then they ultimately go through a stretch where I wonder how they can ever win another game.
  10. Is JD ok? He has missed an awful lot of games this year.
  11. This offseason sure seems like the right time to try to get a Nico extension done. With the team likely being a couple years away from beginning its next serious contention window, that will put them near the end of his arbitration years. It would be great to be able to tack another year or two on the end of that deal now to ensure that he will still be around when the team is (hopefully) ready to compete. What do Nico's peripherals say about whether his performance is sustainable? To me it appears the only question is whether he can stay healthy. The 5% walk rate could be slightly concerning, but it isn't a huge deal with everything else considered.
  12. Just this years playoffs I think. It was reported differently on whatever radio station I had on earlier, but I didn't think it made sense that he would have to miss next year's playoffs too. Most likely just inaccurate reporting.
  13. And he can't play in next year's playoffs either, even once the suspension has been fulfilled?
  14. I'm all for bringing him back once the Tigers are ready to eat a good portion of his remaining salary.
  15. Why AREN'T you capitalizing them???
  16. Oh man, that sucks. Vin Scully was amazing, an iconic voice that will never be replaced.
  17. I think so too. I like the immediate result, but only if the Cubs are serious about trying to resign Contreras, which I don't think they are. This feels more like a misplay by Hoyer. Combined with some of his other recent contract decisions, I have no confidence that he is capable of building a contending team.such as? Villar and Simmons mostly. Not exactly crippling long term deals, but they were unforced mistakes that were completely unnecessary. The Cubs wasted $10 Million when they could have got the same or better performance from guys on minimum salaries. Everyone misses on occasion, but those signings in particular were seemingly obvious overpays from the start and lead me to question Hoyer's ability to target and sign the right players going forward.

  19. But not here. They will extend him. I’m confident. Hoyer's response to an adjacent question certainly didn't inspire my confidence that the Cubs have any interest in an extension..
  20. Good news folks!
  21. I have thought from the beginning that Happ would be likely to stay, although my personal preference would be the opposite - Trade Happ while he is at his maximum value and prior to a big arbitration payday, and re-sign Willson to a long term deal.
  22. Contreras and Happ are both currently in tonight's starting lineup, for what that's worth.
  23. Hosmer to the Red Sox.
  24. T-minus 4 hours until the deadline.
