  1. Tough call here with a 3 run lead. I think you have to go to Alzolay unless they add on here. As huge as it would be to save both him and Leiter, that might be getting a little too cute.
  2. With a 3 run lead, I'm not opposed to saving Leiter for Game 2 and trying to steal an inning out of someone else in the 8th.
  3. If I wrote this, it would pretty much all be about Yak-zies and the Diner Grill
  4. Let me play Devil's Advocate here regarding PCA. I get that people are excited about him because he is the team's #1 prospect, but he hasn't exactly been tearing the cover off the ball in Iowa. He is currently batting .253 with an OPS just a tad over .800. Why would the Cubs rush him up this season when he might not be quite ready? Is it really worth him being called up to be primarily a pinch runner or defensive replacement? There are other options (Canario, Mervis) who may be able to contribute more offensively to this year's team, so I'm in favor of giving them a shot until/unless PCA really pushes the issue with his performance in Iowa.
  5. One of the things that has surprised me lately is how many seats are still unsold at Wrigley Field despite having a contending team in late August. I don't know where to find attendance figures by game, but I believe the individual game attendance for Monday and Tuesday nights against the Brewers was somewhere around 34,000. I know those were weeknight games and school has started again, but I still expected more fans for such an important series. What is is going to take for the Cubs to actually sell out Wrigley again? They are a somewhat disappointing 9th in home attendance this year, trailing the Dodgers, Yankees, Padres, Cardinals, Braves, Phillies, Blue Jays, and Astros. It still feels strange to go from a time where Standing Room Only was the norm to today where there are large sections of seats unsold for even the most important games.
  6. Good for them though. They have nothing to lose but the money, so why not try to take a run at it if ownership gave the green light to spend a bit more.
  7. Interesting. Apparently they think they can make up 5 games.
  8. I think it would be foolish to count on Assad and/or Wicks as anything more than a 5th starter and/or rotational depth. They are certainly valuable pieces to have on a roster and will both play a role throughout the season, but the Cubs need more certainty at the top/middle of the rotation. If you pencil in Taillon as #4 and Assad/Wicks/etc. to fill the #5 role, with Steele as your 1 or 2, there are still 2 holes to fill with high-end starters. Maybe that is Hendricks + a free agent, or Stroman (if he opts in) + a free agent, but regardless I think there are at least 2 openings.
  9. Dbacks about to be swept, with the Orioles coming to town next. Take 3 out of 4 from the Reds and the Cubs will have a pretty firm grip on a playoff spot.
  10. I'm curious what his value actually is on the open market. Could they decline the option and then bring him back for something like 2/18 or 2/20 instead and save a few million next year?
  11. I want that if for no other reason than to see how far he can climb up the Cubs All-Time strikeout list. He is currently sitting at #8 and #7 would be in reach next year. It is amazing to think of him being on the Top 10 list.
  12. Someone needs to talk to Cliff Floyd about how the playoffs work. He keeps preaching how important it is to win the division versus a Wild Card berth, apparently not understanding that the #3 division winner also has to play in the Wild Card round.
  13. What a series. With the Brewers playing the Phillies next, if the Cubs can take care of business against the Reds, they will be in really good shape and will be breathing right down the neck of one of either the Brewers or Phillies.
  14. Where would Dansby be hitting in the Braves lineup?
  15. Don't bunt! If Happ doesn't get the run in, then they walk Bellinger.
  16. The justification will obviously be that he wanted Leiter to face the lefties.
  17. I was hoping to make Woodruff work more there to get to a reliever in the 7th, but now I'm not so sure we won't see Woodruff back out there.
  18. Are the Brewers the new Cardinals? They have somehow cobbled together an unimpressive roster of guys who somehow became an annoyingly good team.
