This is a case of Hoyer dipping his toes in the water of competing for a playoff spot without losing anything of real significance. It's not exciting, and it's probably not enough, but it's better than doing nothing.
I guess the Mets have found the new loophole to quickly rebuild a minor league system. Sign star players to huge contracts, then trade them along with truckloads of money to bring back top prospects.
While that is true, the Cubs wasted another 94 at bats on Eric Hosmer. It would have been nice to have just given Mervis that opportunity from the start. Maybe it still would have ended up the same way, but Hosmer was never going to work out.
