  1. You're right, and hopefully it's just "one game", but games like this are magnified when you look at the Cubs current pitching situation. Outside of Steele and Hendricks, the other starters are a crap shoot, so it hurts to lose when the starter has a good/decent outing. Baseball is baseball and even the best teams are going to lose games against the worst teams, but this is a stretch that the Cubs really need to capitalize on. It would really suck to see them squander this opportunity against bad teams after working so hard to get back into the race against good teams. Like you said though, tomorrow is another day, and hopefully one with a different outcome or else I'll be in full panic mode.
  2. There are just too many guys struggling in the Cubs lineup right now. Tauchman hasn't done a ton lately, although he's still giving them more than anyone could have expected. It's great that Happ found the basket tonight, but overall he's still making way too many unproductive outs. Candelario has cooled off, Morel has been bad for awhile, and Gomes hasn't done anything lately. It would be nice if Mervis was mashing at Iowa and could maybe give them shot in the arm, but he doesn't seem to be pushing the envelope. PCA is the only guy right now who is really making a case for a call up, but that still doesn't seem like a wise move.
  3. My concern is that it feels a bit like a house of cards on top of a starting rotation that is on the verge of collapse. The offense is going to have to be really good for this team to sustain a playoff push.
  4. Five whole hits against this parade of bums, with 7-8-9 due up in the 9th.
  5. If only we had field reporters who might be able to answer questions like those.
  6. Two hits against this jobber isn't gonna get it done.
  7. This is dumb, but I don't really care.
  8. Yeah, it's not a bad contract, and he's probably trade-able if that's the direction they want to go. He's fine and affordable and does some things really well, but he's also lacking in power that then needs to be made up elsewhere in the lineup.
  9. Shaw's possible rapid movement makes for some interesting decisions at the big league level. 2B and SS are locked down for the foreseeable future, so do the Cubs think highly enough of him that they want to avoid blocking his path to 3B? Does that mean they might stay away from a big contract for a guy like Chapman, and maybe even Candelario unless they can get him to sign a shorter term deal? 3B might call for more of a stopgap solution as long as they can lock down a significant offensive threat at the other corner (Bellinger or otherwise).
  10. I haven't been paying attention. Are they still riding the magical 1-run victory train?
  11. It all started so promising. On the bright side, my Sunday afternoon just freed up.
  12. Why are the Cubs giving up on this game? Taillon should not be out there.
  13. I know there were at least a few posters here who stated they wanted no part of a Bellinger extension, I believe largely in part to some unfavorable peripherals. Is anyone changing their tune on whether to re-sign him long term. I was in the "let him walk" camp for much of the season, but if he finishes the season playing at this same level, I don't know how the Cubs can justify NOT making a serious attempt to bring him back. Unless they have a legitimate shot at Ohtani, I think their off-season efforts need to start with signing Bellinger. It's definitely a bit of a risk with his history, but I just don't see how they can let an MVP-caliber player walk away and expect to be better next year.
  14. In case you were wondering, this offseason will be Alzolay's first arbitration year, so they still have him for 3 years after this one.
  15. Huge win after giving up the lead. 5 games over .500!
  16. And then he blew away Biggio with nothing but fastballs.
  17. Guy who throws 100 is out there throwing sliders like Michael Wuertz.
  18. Looking ahead, if this goes to extra innings, we're probably looking at Killian or Palencia.
