I don't know if this has been mentioned anywhere else, but Alonso has also changed representation over to Scott Boras, so any idea of a trade + immediate extension is probably out the window. If a team trades for him, they are trading for 1 year and then he hits the open market.

According to the article I just read, the Mets would have to have either PCA or Horton as a centerpiece in the deal. There is a world in which PCA is expendable if the Cubs are able to re-sign Bellinger to play CF. But not for a guy with 1 year remaining on his contract. There is no world where I would trade Horton for anything but a cost-controlled star.

It is definitely too early to make any conclusions about the new format, but it will be interesting to see whether the near 50/50 split holds over time regardless of home field advantage.

It looks like we are currently on track for every Wild Card series to be over in 2 games, with every game being decided by 2 or more runs. Not exactly compelling baseball.

I think it's pretty clear that Mervis doesn't factor into the Cubs long term plans. McGeary is a fringe prospect at best right now. Whatever the Cubs decide to do at 1B, those two guys will have very little to do with the decision.

If the Cubs operated as a team with their market/resources "should", then there would be no reason for them to get outbid on Bellinger. He was their best offensive player on a team that needs more good offensive players. With that said, we know the Cubs don't operate that way. They will spend money, but they will do so within some largely self- imposed parameters. So what is the opportunity cost if they were to sign Bellinger to a massive deal? What other need(s) would go unaddressed? Can they make up for his lost offense with more of a combination approach (improvements at 1B/3B) and do so with significantly less money committed for the future? I would still prefer signing Bellinger for whatever it takes and then figure the rest out later, but all signs seem to point to the Cubs going another direction.

Oh, I have no idea. It was just odd the way he answered. The easy explanation could be that Ross was annoyed/upset in general after another tough loss and just didn't want to entertain the question.

Ross seemed annoyed by the question, "How much did you guys feed off Morel's energy in the late innings?". After a pause, his answer was "We feed off each other all year long" and no comment at all on Morel's play. I could very well be reading more into his comments than what he actually said, but that was a layup question that most managers would use to complement their young hitter.

Another way of looking at it - The Marlins have a 72% winning percentage in 1 run games and 44% in games decided my 2 or more runs. That is truly amazing.
