Again, this is interesting to me in that apparently the Cubs have a very low opinion of Matt Mervis. It says a lot that they see Canario as a more valuable bat off the bench than the left-handed Mervis.

I am expecting the Reds are to pass (or at least tie) the Cubs. So can the Cubs stay ahead of everyone else? -

It's meaningless baseball overall, but not to Kris Bryant who I'm sure would love some positive vibes going into next season. It's not like he's a lame duck, and he's going to be around for a long time, so they don't need to audition his replacements just yet.

If he's healthy, he's healthy. Do you really think they rushed their massive long-term investment back to the lineup in a lost season just because they are playing the Cubs? The timing just so happened to line up, unfortunately for the Cubs.

Leave it to the Cubs to somehow bring Kris Bryant back from the dead.

I wouldn't say that this comes as a complete surprise though. There have been signs up trouble even during the streak of series wins. Good on the Cubs for winning as many of those games as they did, but they are still a flawed team and the injuries certainly aren't helping.

The optimistic part of me still says just get to the playoffs and anything can happen. The other part says are these guys going to have anything left when they get there? It's really hard to imagine any substantial playoff run right now.
