  1. A SS who likely won't play SS, a 3B who likely won't play 3B, and an OF who is best suited as a DH. Defense be damned! Seriously though, it is surprising to see 5 Cubs in the top 50. I like Matt Shaw, but I'm not sure he really belongs at 31 after a total of 157 minor league at bats.
  2. I don't have specific quotes, but it was implied in some of the conversations at Cubs Convention. Counsell definitely mentioned pitching guys on 5 days rest and it sounded like that would be something he tries to do whenever possible. Again, I don't know what form that will take, but it definitely doesn't sound like he is married to the strict 5 man rotation.
  3. Indications are that they do, at least in some form. Maybe not a straight 6-man rotation, but it sure sounds like they want to work in additional starters (beyond the regular five) to help manage workloads and give guys extra rest.
  4. My fault. I clicked on the wrong thread. But yes, I wouldn't draft him either.
  5. Hurts holding onto the ball for that safety was as bad, is not worse, as anything I saw Fields do all season.
  6. I don't want to sound like a broken record, but this is where I feel like the site is going the wrong direction. The organization of posts often doesn't make sense anymore. News like international signings used to be very clearly posted in a relevant thread, not simply mentioned (and buried) in another general or unrelated thread. I'm probably guilty of it myself too since most activity is concentrated in the Cubs Discussion forum now, but if we continue to move away from organized discussions then this might as well just be a Discord server. With that, I will step down from my soapbox. Edit: I see there is a thread in the Minor League forum, so my bad for missing that, and maybe it is just time to reevaluate which forum categories make sense and are being used.
  7. Saying nothing of Busch as a player, I was impressed by him at the Cubs Convention (based on Marquee's coverage - I wasn't there). The guy was traded on Thursday, showed up at the Convention Friday, and was part of the kids panel Saturday. Nothing like throwing him right into the fire, but he acquitted himself nicely. Seems to be a likeable guy.
  8. Is this already being discussed somewhere? https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/fernando-cruz-inks-4-million-bonus-with-cubs-at-start-of-2024-international-signing-period/
  9. So it has to be justified somehow, more than "I don't want to play for the team that might draft me." I'm not clear what a valid reason would even be.
  10. I have seen a few articles mention the possibility of Caleb Williams entering the supplemental draft, while also indicating that it is extremely unlikely. Can anyone explain the downside of a player choosing to enter the supplemental draft? I would assume there must be a big one since nobody ever does it. Why would a player want to or not enter the supplemental draft, and why is it even an option?
  11. So weird that it's Wild Card weekend any no games all Sunday afternoon.
  12. My takeaway from Cubs Convention is I really like Craig Counsell.
  13. He just turned 26, but I agree.
  14. I would like to think that at this point any booing of Krause is mostly tongue in cheek, but regardless it is ridiculous to put that on his family. It is, and always has been, so incredibly mean-spirited. If Krause looked and spoke like Theo Epstein, he would be beloved.
  15. IF all those things play out, I would also look to RF as a future option. Seiya is already not a great defender and he isn't going to get any better as he ages. Bellinger would be very good in RF and Suzuki could get a majority of the DH at bats. That is also assuming everyone stays healthy. As long as Bellinger is open to moving around, it won't be difficult to find him a place to play.
  16. I agree, but they need to do "something" with Mervis, even if that is trading him for a low-level lottery ticket. If they don't have any confidence in him ever contributing to the Major League team, then he is just taking up space at AAA and on the 40 man roster.
  17. When would he age out of those lists? Does he still qualify for 2024?
  18. I agree, but also you can only have so many 1B/glove-limited guys on the roster. Flexibility is a good thing, but it isn't extremely helpful on below average defenders.
  19. Is there anything interesting about Almonte? He has one more arbitration year left in 2025 and then will be a free agent.
  20. How the Cubs view Busch defensively is a big question to determine where they go from here. If they see him as a 3B (which seems doubtful based on other comments here), then Hoskins is in play. If they see him as a 1B, then Hoskins is out but they may be focusing on Chapman instead. In either event, Morel is probably still a trade candidate, but for who?
  21. This also tells me the Cubs probably didn't think as high of Ferris as some of us did. They have had some time to watch him and, if they thought he looked like a future top or mid-rotation starter, they don't make this deal.
  22. What is Busch's natural position? I saw him listed as 2B, he is being mentioned as a 3B, and others are saying 1B. I would certainly hope the Cubs didn't trade Ferris just for a 26 year old AAA DH prospect.
  23. ... in 2031 https://www.mlb.com/news/predicting-world-series-winners-through-2033?partnerId=zh-20240111-1136917-mlb-1-A&qid=1026&utm_id=zh-20240111-1136917-mlb-1-A&bt_ee=V2nu71P3Z44c5eWCawTPPyZzuYNSjRYKkXpozmSunkMa8nADd3nV%2FJzsypR%2FP%2Bl0&bt_ts=1704980212630 Don't we all feel better now?

      • Haha
  24. I like the creatively-structured contract. There isn't a ton of downside for the Cubs . In a perfect world, he pitches great and they extend the deal to 5 years at a very affordable $16M AAV.
  25. With Imanaga in town for a physical and press conference later this week, will he also be sticking around for the Cubs Convention? On one hand, that would seem to be a no-brainer. He is a big signing and he is already here, so why not generate some buzz at the Convention? On the other hand, that is possibly a very uncomfortable situation to throw a guy into when he is brand new to the country and (probably) doesn't speak English.
