  1. Don't bet Vance. It's a sure loser. I agree with CubsColtsPacers, a quick hook won't get it done with Marquis. When he sucks, he usually sucks right out of the gate.
  2. As I said yesterday, as long as Guzman keeps throwing the way he has, I'm not going to get worked up over Prior. I agree which is why I like the Cubs rotation over the Cards rotation right now. Cubs have much more depth and depth with options. If the Cards have anyone blow up right now, they have no one.
  3. What do you guys think of the Prior MiLB start? Good idea?
  4. No bathroom breaks, Vance. This is serious stuff. Wear an astronaut diaper next time.
  5. He's done alright with landing A-Ram and D-Lee for a pile of junk. Sure, he's had his share of bad moves as well, but he has secured four players who are likely all-stars this year (D-Lee, A-Ram, Soriano and Barrett. He gets way too much credit for Aramis and Lee. Both were salary dumps. Luckily, Hendry had the necessary parts and budget to fit both guys in. No one wanted Derrek Lee the year before Hendry traded for him. Baltimore was the most interested, but Florida wouldn't pick up part of the salary, and a deal never happened. Aramis was about to get expensive for Pittsburgh, and they were dumping anyone making any decent money that year. These were not big coos on Hendry's part. I'm happy the Cubs were the team that landed these two players, and I'm even more thrilled that it cost very little in talent to get them, but those guys would have been traded to someone regardless. I don't know about too much credit. You still have to be the team at the right place at the right time who gets the salary dumpee. I count Larry Walker as one of the feathers in Jocketty's cap during his tenure with the Cards and he's didn't approach the Lee and Aram coup (due to his age and injuries).
  6. Count me in! Thanks, wolfie.
  7. Are we doing this again this year?
  8. Well deserved trip to the SB for the Bears. Congrats, Bears fans!
  9. New polls are up in the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time Tourney. http://gatewayredbirds.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=15
  10. Is Jim Hendry still on a lot of medication? So I take it from your comment you know for sure that there weren't 3 or 4 other teams willing to pay him that much? Like it or not, the market for SP is ridiculous, both via trade (e.g. Jennings) and FA (Lilly, Meche, etc.). No one wants to pay those prices. In an ideal world you have enough young SP in your farm system. We thought we did with Wood, Z, and Prior. It's pretty easy to fill in the other 2 spots in a rotation. It's going to take some time to get young pitching from our system now that Wood and Prior can't be counted on. You don't replace #1 starters easily. Veal, Gallagher, and Pawelek are the next wave, but in the meantime we had to pay out the backside. Hendry knows it. He had a choice. Give up our B+ prospects (Pie, EPatt, Veal) via trade and kill our chances at cheap young pitching down the road, or overpay for #3-5 starters in the FA market. While I give Hendry props for not repeating the mistake of running out quad A pitchers or not quite ready pitchers again, it seems as though you minimize the impact of overpaying for mediocre talent. Unless you view this overinflated market as static (i.e. it's not going to correct itself), those contracts could definitely come back to haunt the Cubs.
  11. 6 yrs. now
  12. Hey Vance, just a hint, but you are a member of the forum so you can weigh in. BTW, Henderson, Bench, and Robinson have all been pointed out as omissions with cases made so they'll likely be included.
  13. LT is an amazing specimen. I love how the crowd went wild when Merriman recovered that fumble, knowing it was LT's chance. He then takes it in on the first try, the toughest 7 yards in football. Simply amazing. On a side note, I think it would be very entertaining to see a Bears/Colts Super Bowl.
  14. Cutler was horrible, regardless of what that "71 yd. pass play" did to his final numbers. Denver dominated the entire game and Cutler did everything he could to lose it. How can you not open up the pass with 120 yards rushing from Bell in the first half?
  15. and i think he will... becoming a Sammy Sosa in any city requires a critical sports media. in other words, not going to happen, unless management itself turns on the player and drives him out of town (ie. Templeton, Lankford, and Drew). Or perhaps acts in a way that hurts his team while in the midst of a not so graceful decline from glory. Either way, I agree with wolf. He used to not care about such awards, he was all about "winnang the World Series, mang".
  16. Awww....man, Boston isn't going to pony up $30 or so million dollars for Igawa? Crap. I can't wait to see what happens when Boston gives up its right to negotiate with Matsuzaka. It's going to be a complete free for all. I think he's talking about the $ the Red Sox are going to throw at players if the deal falls through.
  17. Leaning toward it. Are you bothered by his testimony in front of Congress and the difficult-to-ignore implications thereof? Just asking - not judging. We value your insight and opinion. Yes, I am bothered by his testimony. What I think would be a travesty is if McGwire doesn't even garner the 5% of votes necessary to keep him on the ballot. Everyone's hearing a ton of this "not on the first ballot" sentiment. We should know a lot more in the next couple of year and it would be a shame if McGwire's completely wiped from future ballots due to steroid protests. Like it or not, we don't know who has used steroids or who continues to use them.
  18. Given that criteria, Sidney and Russ (Ortiz) should be rolling in the dough. But I get your point.
  19. If that's the case, then why would the Cubs be pursuing Drew? Or would that make Pie enticing trade bait?
  20. I'd encourage Cubs fans who like to discuss baseball with rival fans to come on over to Gateway. Hot Stove is the best time to be on rival boards.
  21. Can you elaborate? I assume you mean Pujols' season was par for the course, but Howard's season was an anomaly?
  22. Many people's hatred towards Alou is irrational, just like some Cards/Dodgers fans towards Drew. That said, I think Alou's baserunning adventures and old fogeyness are a little more tangible than Drew "not looking like he cares". Nah, it' more like I sit out of games with a stomach ailment or a hangnail. That's pretty tangible.
  23. Can we acknowledge that the disdain Cubs fans feel for Alou is the same disdain Cards fans feel for Drew? While each fall outside the realm of saber, there are valid reasons for not wanting these players on your team.
