So you wouldn't have signed Holliday due to the payroll % spent on him and hopefully Pujols? Sure there's risk involved in committing those dollars for the long term, but I think Holliday is a risk worth taking. The Cards could just fill in with marginal players as they've been doing in years they didn't make the playoffs. They did pretty well in the years where they invested in the right players like Pujols, Edmonds, and Rolen. IMO, the worst moves the Cards have made this decade have been the Mulder/Haren trade, the Lohse extension, and possibly the Carp extension (in terms of playing time missed). As far as long term FA participation, I'm not optimistic about production from our prospects in the immediate future, so that could hurt, but I have faith in the core.

Sounds like they are doing anything possible to fit his and Pujols' contracts on the team. All that means it the Cards got an even better deal than first reported, as well as more payroll flexibility.

Unfortunately, the typical Cards game consisted of Pujols with a multi-HR game and nothing else.

Don't you live in St. Louis? This is awful news. It really sounds like the city was trying to make the deal happen as a moderator in the situation and Centene and the Ballpark Village Developers couldn't get it done. I'm sure many here are content to revel in the city of St. Louis's misery, but if you ever come to games here, you'd appreciate a finished Ballpark Village. I'm more concerned about Centene not moving downtown.

That phone call has me starting to wonder if Roger might be telling the truth. What about the call made you think that? It sounded like Clemens wasn't willing to say something like, "You know I didn't do steroids, Brian". It sounded like McNamee was acknowledging that the two were friends and he's sorry to have hurt his buddy. Throughout this whole thing, Clemens just appears shell shocked that his buddy turned him in after all he'd done for him. Sad, maybe, but his friend has a dying son and Clemens glosses over that.

I'm glad to see this happen. The Cards need to "rebuild" in a big way, but that can happen whether Tony's there or not. You can't argue with his track record, or even this season's managing performance in wrangling 78 wins out of a team which scored 725 runs and allowed 829.

Congrats to all the Cubs fanatics here. It's a good group of knowledgeable baseball fans who just happen to root for the Cubs. I can't say I'll be rooting for the Cubs (like that matters), but I can guarantee I won't take any cheap shots or make any sour grape remarks regardless of how they do. That's something, isn't it? I know it's easy to make such casual statements as a relatively objective observer, but it's a done deal. Anyone who had high hopes the Cards decimated AAA team to do well against the Brewers at home was delusional.

You've asserted both that the Brewers are the toughest competition and that the Brewers are way better than the Cardinals. I agree that the Brewers are way better, but the same anomaly that would transfer the 1984 Tigers into a 65-win team if they were Cubs that year is working against the Brewers and in favor of the Cardinals, so despite talent, runs, or any other logical measure, the Cardinals will still prove to be the toughest competition in the division. There's no magic involved at baseball, the Cardinals have just been a well run franchise for many years. Right now (for this season) they have been a poorly run franchise and should have no chance at the postseason because they are a bad team. The Cubs and Brewers are not excellent teams, but they are above average, something the Cardinals cannot claim. I'd agree with this post whole heartedly. This is Jocketty's worst year as GM even barring injuries (there was no need to give Carp a long contract). I'd also maintain that the Cards have sustained more injuries than any team in baseball (how impactful they are is debatable). The way the Cubs are allowing Cards fans just bleed to death is rather ruthless. Just put us out of our misery already!
