  1. Can someone please explain why Walker is persona non grata per Hendry? Is the only reason he's trying so hard to move him is because he's a good trading chip with a reasonable salary?
  2. No one has mentioned what these signing would relative to the rest of the NL Central. No one else has done anything except for the Cubs so far (unless you include the Pirates/Reds Casey for Williams trade). A poster mentioned these three players would boost the team's OBP to .330 from .308. That's pretty huge. The Cubs would have far fewer games with a runner on second or third with no outs resulting in no runs in key situations. Relative to the NL Central, the Cubs are in fine shape. Of course, it still comes down to your starting pitchers staying healthy and effective.
  3. Love my fellow Cantonian's opinion :D !
  4. I wasn't on the board when Pujols signed a long term and signing with your imcumbent team isn't sexy, but what was the general tone on this board when it happened? It was a hefty contract. I think his contracts to Pujols and Carpenter could be his crowning achievements in this tenure in St. Louis.
  5. I'd bet on that one. You know when one of Teixeira/Soriano/M. Young/Blalock leaves Texas that someone will overpay for him without looking at park factors. Ditto for Beckett and Burnett. Hey, at least they're looking beyond wins, should we claim a partial victory?
  6. Or maybe he's just 35 with no signs of decline (unless you count Petco). I'm wondering the same thing, perhaps OF are perceived as more readily available. There's a huge drop off after him on the free agent market, but maybe teams think other outfielders will come available via trade?
  7. I concur. I have a feeling Beckett and Burnett will both prove to be a bit overrated by not getting all those starts at the Fish palace. Exactly, I'm not going to go nuts throwing money at a Coors Field (or even Texas) hitter either.
  8. My bad  , but you got my point. I find it utterly wasteful to go after Burnett who is a huge gamble at 5/50 plus, instead of spending it on Giles when we have TWO outfield holes unlike the Cubs.
  9. If the Cubs get Giles and Furcal, I'm packing up my toys and going home  !
  10. Who are your other lefties off the bench now that Hollandsworth's gone? Not a whole lot of bench lefties with pop available. He's definitely not a liability defensively. He is a great team player and has come through in big at bats for us. I have no idea why he had approx. 150 ABs in the first half for us and 100 in the second half when the Cards were decimated with injuries. He seemed to be buried on the bench.

  12. Apparently, the Cards countered at $750,000, but wouldn't match the mil mark. I'm surprised there's not more bashing of this rumor going on, Mabry posted .188 .236 .396 .632 post all star break last year.
  13. This can't be true. Any sane person would rather see Luna or Nunez out there if you're trying to save money at 2nd. If this happens, the Cards are a little spoiled by their unforeseen success at 2nd.
  14. I PM'd you Cubs Lady in Stl
  15. I think what makes them unique is they're primarily ground ball pitchers = less expensive and perhaps less injury prone (Carp's Ks were a nice bonus though). I'd be interested in team's starting rotation price tags vs. their production in 05.
  16. Hey, leave the Cards fraternizing to Cards fans! By the way, where were you? That's pretty awesome! I hope we re-sign Grudz.
  17. That's the point I was kind of trying to make. Thanks. Some of their minor league pitching is sick (Anthony Reyes). They really have nothing as far as big impact offense prospects, and the offense is really falling apart. I don't see how the Pitching could even be criticized. Outside of freak injuries, they've been very, very good the last 2 years, and that's not what has failed them in the playoffs. Sure, K-Town. They played some good ball in a couple of Series. I'll give them that. But what exactly happened in the '04 WS and the '05 NLCS? I'm not dogging them, but the absence of an offense was/is their problem. Do you really put more stock in playoff performance than regular season results though? Cards finished 3rd in runs scored in the NL (2 runs behind Philly). Also, the bullpen was pegged as the worst in the playoffs, but during the regular season they had the best bullpen ERA in the NL by a good margin (3.17, Astros were second with 3.63). It's difficult to assess weak spots in the off season. Do you go by regular season results or do you look at where you were lacking in the playoffs?
  18. I find it amusing how casual fans (not here) still view the Cards as all offense, no pitching. If anything, I think they're swinging the other direction, especially if they settle for a 2nd/3rd tier outfielder. I still don't think it's prudent to go after Burnett at those dollars.
  19. I guess that explains the Cards bullpen degree of success. And healthy starting pitching coupled with a manager obsessed with matchups.
  20. I agree with you, Cubs bullpen has been a weak point IMO in the last couple of years. These moves definitely strengthen playoff possibilities. It seems the Cubs fortune next year will still rely heavily on the health of the starting pitching. If that's not there, the bullpen moves become moot, but if it is, it could overcome any weaknesses in the outfield. Although San Diego had the best bullpen in the playoffs (arguably vs. Houston and Chi Sox), it's also usually a lesser used commodity in the playoffs due to bumping your 5th (and maybe your 4th) starter to the pen. San Diego had no opportunity to exercize their pen strength.
  21. No way that happens. I can't remember a time when Jocketty has ever overpaid for a free agent starting pitcher and I don't think he'll start now in a Kate Moss thin market.
  22. Yes, but you're Larry David, so we should expect that (CYE is my favorite show). So far, nothing to be jealous of on the Cards front. Cubs have way more money to spend this offseason, almost twice as much. I was curious to see how they were going to spend it.
  23. Why are you guys making moves so early? The Cards are sitting back doing nothing to this point, except exercise Suppan's option. Hmmm, curious whether we're missing the boat or the Cubs are jumping the gun.
  24. http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=ml-braves&msg=61873.1&ctx=0 Actually, the CF versus 1B argument is not invalid, although the stupid reasoning behind it was. Problem is, VORP takes position into account, and Jones was 19th, while Pujols was 2nd and Lee was first. Pujols' VORP was 99.7 versus 106.0 of Lee Pujols' OPS+ was 167 versus 177 of Lee Those are close... considering that Pujols played on a more relevent team I have no problem with him winning the award. If Lee's numbers were, say, 130 VORP and 200 OPS+, then he is so far better than Pujols that it makes it harder to give it to Pujols. Truffle, I will remember this post forever. Thanks for being oh-so-more eloquent about this than I could ever be.
