  1. They actually lost 7 straight last year. April 30-May 7. And wasn't it shortly after that they unloaded Hawkins?
  2. You also have to play smart and this has been the dumbest team in baseball since Opening Day 2003. That's on the manager.
  3. Leo Durocher's mouldering corpse. He couldn't be any worse.
  4. Sure it would. Look at the Royals.
  5. Maybe Bruce can answer this since he's on the road with the team right now. Does Dusty leave Theriot shackled to the bench all night or does he let Ryan go back to the hotel after each game so he doesn't have to sleep in the dugout?
  6. I'd keep Aardsma. I think he's going to be pretty good once he's had some more seasoning.
  7. The homer was in the eighth, not the ninth. I'm looking at the boxscore right now. Bere went seven, gave up three hits, struck out 12. Fassero went 1/3 of an inning, gave up three hits and a walk and four runs on the granny. Hoffman got the save and, get this, Chuck Freakin' McElroy got the win.
  8. It's great that the Dodgers are interested in Wilson but why would the Pirates trade him with Casey on the DL?
  9. Dude, Neifi saved us. He has to play. I don't care if Mabry can't hit his weight. He should be playing first and Walker should be playing second. I'm tired of watching Hairston miss signs and Neifi miss pitches every day.
  10. Duck calls in the bleachers for when Pierre and Jacque try to throw the ball back to the infield.
  11. Schmidt was throwing strikes last night. There weren't a lot of bad pitches to take that would have been called balls.
  12. Don't they have a pretty solid near-ready guy at AAA? Injured I really don't see why the Pirates would worry about who would play first base. Their season is over. They are 15 under .500, 12.5 out of first, 11 out of the wild card, and worst of all, behind the Marlins. Who cares who plays first? If they can get some quality in return for a guy, they'd be foolish not to deal. Potential financial benefits also help. Let Joe Randa play first. Let Jose Hernandez, he already has a couple outings there this year. Make the Cubs include a body that can fill time there. It doesn't matter. Get a 3-way deal that sends Matt Stairs back over there. He and Burnitz together would be funny. Heck, what about a three-way deal that brings Stairs back here? The more Canadians the better. Then maybe dig up Julio Zuleta and have him work some kind of voodoo on the bats.
  13. Sounds like we need this guy: http://www.speakeasy.org/~bucky/elia_tirade.html
  14. Fassero was the instigator of one of my greatest Cub-induced meltdowns ever. Luckily I was home by myself. They were in the final game of a series in San Diego in late August in 2001. At this point in the year Baylor had already pitched the poor guy's arm off. The Cubs scrap and claw to tie or take a one-run lead against the Pads in a game they absolutely had to have. Padres get a guy on in the bottom of the eighth and Klesko is coming up. At this point in the year Fassero couldn't get me out but Baylor brings him in because, hey, he's a lefty... I'm screaming at the TV at this point, Baylor you idiot, Fassero's going to serve one up. Fassero promptly serves up room service fastball that Klesko hits so far it needed a passport when it landed. Cubs lose and start a tailspin that they never really recovered from. In the words of Ralphie in a Christmas Story I proceeded to weave a tapestry of profanity that to this day still hangs somewhere over Central Texas. As galactically bad as Baker is handling a pitching staff and making in-game decisions, Baylor may have been worse.

  16. Enrique Wilson, please pick up the white courtesy phone...
  17. Wait a sec? Sure he asked for those type of players but he didn't ask for all these injuries either. It's not Dusty job to build a team it's Hendry's. It's also Hendry's job to tell Dusty he's an idiot for wanting Neifi Perez back for two freakin' years.
  18. Words were exchanged, I'm guessing, regarding the airmail throw in the 1st that allowed Cameron to move to 2nd. I caught only the tail end, so I don't know for sure if he was "chewing". Wait a minute, Juan Pierre OVERTHREW somebody? Alert the media! not exactly. his throw sort of went straight up. Good thing there weren't any skeet shooters in the crowd then. How many homestands before people start showing up with duck calls in the bleachers?
  19. That's all Garner's good at though. He's not much better at in-game management than Baker is.
  20. I actually agree with you. I've been a Cubs fan all my life, but we need some serious managment changes. Sometimes you have to get to the lowest low before someone realizes that maybe all the excuses are nothing more than a smokescreen for the real problem. Dusty hasn't done terrible this year, but I think it's time for some new enthusiastic blood in the dugout. Ken Didn't all this already happen in 2002? How much lower do we need to go?
  21. Actually, Sosa had a pretty strong arm, you just had no idea where the ball was going when he let go of it.
  22. Let's see what happens after he's been around the league once. It could also be that our pitching coach blows.
