  1. I was at The Cell the second weekend of the season this year. I hadnt been there since 2003, and that place looks great. Step into the gate, THEN knock the park if you still have a problem. It would still be full of Sox fans so I'd still have a problem.
  2. That is incorrect. Levine and at least one other source indicated that the Cubs are waiting until the season ends to see where everything is. The original stories said he would get an extension in ST. That has changed. One of the beat guys wrote last week that Dusty was going to get an extension and that it was only a matter of time until it was finalized. Things could change I guess, and I hope they do, but I find it hard to believe every single beat guy would miss it if Baker was in trouble. That said, they also may not have enough to go to print with. National guys can get away with throwing stuff on the wall just to see if it will stick. Beat guys can't.
  3. Gotta love a roster with SIX middle infielders and John Mabry as your fourth outfielder. Can't believe I'm asking this again but when does Pagan come back?
  4. Derwood: Is that the only move they're going to make today? The XM baseball show this morning indicated KC was going to announce "major changes" today. Sounds like Allard Baird is getting the gate.
  5. Mike Scioscia anyone? We know he's a better manager than Baker. He's got the WS ring to prove it. How about Bud Black for pitching coach?
  6. You couldn't pay me enough to watch a game at that abortion of a ballpark full of mouth-breathing wife beaters. Stay home. Why give the Sox money so you can be miserable for three hours?
  7. Thank God for Pittsburgh
  8. I'm guessing you mean this graph: I fear that this continued offensive morass will start to open fissures in the rock-solid clubhouse the Angels have enjoyed during the Mike Scioscia Era. When a pitcher goes out and shuts another team down — and still walks away a loser — how long before snide comments and finger pointing starts? How long can a clubhouse remain silent before the entire team just shuts down? That’s when the season is officially over, regardless of what the standings say. And you make a great point. How soon before the finger-pointing starts and can the Master Motivator and Great Players' Manager keep it from tearing the team apart?
  9. I wondered about that too but since I tuned in late, was Theriot even in San Diego last night? Back on topic, I think the reason the Chicago writers aren't talking about Dusty being fired is that they're closer to the situation than the national guys. The Chicago writers seem convinced Baker is going to get an extension despite three plus years of managing the dumbest team in baseball. I'm of the opinion that if Dusty doesn't have his extension by the end of the month he'll do or say something that all but dares Hendry to fire him.
  10. And the game ends in a scoreless tie. But San Diego wins the shootout.
  11. Problem is Dusty isn't going to bench Jones. He'll be this year's Todd Hollandsworth/Neifi Perez.
  12. Yeah but it's always good to have three back-up second basemen
  13. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Nomar on the DL already?
  14. They should draw more fans. Problem for them is, they usually don't. Even when the Cubs suck. Like they do now.
  15. The only problem I see in picking up a corner outfielder is that Dusty will find a way to screw Murton out of playing time but Jacque will play every day.
  16. If that's the case, can you please provide your explanation of why he became a free agent in the first place? If he was so adamant about staying, why did he file for free agency? Oh please, surely you aren't that naive. He filed for free agency to squeeze as much money out of San Diego as possible. Surely you're smart enough to understand that.
  17. The sad thing I agree 100% with you. How egomaniacal must you be to drag not only a team of 25 ballplayers who want to win, but a legion of fans into the proverbial gutter just so you can leave town on your terms? But the question is, who replaces Dusty on an interim basis? During yesterday's pre-game, Santo was discussing the future with Chris Speier. Speier has managerial aspirations. Might not be the worst choice in the world. I think Speier would be a good choice as the interim manager. If Baker goes I think the whole staff goes. But I agree on Speier.
  18. As bad as this roster is, prior to Lee's injury it was better than the one Baker started with last year. Even without Lee 2-8 in the last 10 is inexcusable given who they've been playing.
  19. As has been pointed out, Wrigley now has a higher capacity than US Cellular. It's bigger now, but up until the last year or so that wasn't the case and the Cubs outdrew the Sox nearly every year since the the Trib has owned the team. Fairweather fans are one thing, that number will fluctuate depending on who is doing well but I don't think there's any doubt that the Cubs have a bigger "diehard" fan base in Chicago than the Sox can ever hope to have. As someone else pointed out, other than '83, the Cubs have pretty much owned Chicago since 1969. So much so that Veeck almost sold the Sox to an out-of-town buyer and Reinsdorf had to threaten to move to Tampa in order to get the city to build that abortion they play in now.
