  1. I'm convinced the Reds are going to deal an outfileder. The question is, which one is available.
  2. And Doug Melvin the best GM nobody talks about. If Tom Hicks hadn't been an idiot and fired him in Texas the Brewers would still be the Brewers.
  3. He was a bum when he was here and he'll be a bum if he comes back. Texas is one of the best hitters' parks in America. Do not be fooled. Plus, he's exactly the kind of guy Baker would run out there in place of Pie when he's ready. It's going to be bad enough next year when Baker is blocking Cedeno by playing Rich Aurilia.
  4. I'm going to guess that Dusty uses the "we're playing a team in a pennant race" excuse to start the Panamanian Service Station Attendant in all four games in Houston.
  5. Yeah, he fouled a pitch of his leg (knee, I think) on Fri 16 Sept. Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Why is it always the crappy guys (Bako, Macias, Perez) who never suffer the season-ending injuries?
  6. My choices would be in this order: Rick Peterson of the Mets (founder of the Oakland's big three of Mulder/Zito/Hudson. Bud Black of the Angels. Mike Maddux of the Brewers. (not b/c of his brother, but he is a damn fine pitching coach) And none of those teams will give the Cubs permission to talk to any of them. As somebody said, it's going to be Dick Pole. He's Dusty's boy. Wasn't he Zimmer's pitching coach when the Cubs made the playoffs in '89?
  7. I asked this on another thread. What's wrong with Hairston?
  8. Which means Neifi and Macias are now hitting at the top of the order.
  9. And Jose Macias is in the game as a pinch runner. Wouldn't want to use Theriot or anything...
  10. Walker singles. Lee doubles. Walker collapses at third base. Pat and Ron think it's his knee.
  11. Cubs fail to score in first. Perez Walker Lee Garciaparra Burnitz Murton Patterson Barrett Maddux
  12. That may be the best idea so far. This would also include No Neifi, No Macias.
  13. Of the guys who aren't free agents, the only untouchables should be Lee, ARam, Prior and Z. With that said, I'd go into the offseason with this nucleus in mind: C Barrett 1B Lee 2B Cedeno SS 3B ARam LF Murton CF RF SP Prior SP Zambrano SP Wood SP Maddux SP BP Dempster BP Ohman BP Novoa BP Williamson or Wuertz BP Williams BP B Blanco B Hairston B B B B Either resign Garciaparra to another one year incentive-laden deal or target Furcal as FA No. 1. Sign a lefty reliever Sign Burnett or move Williams to the rotation and stick one of the kids in the pen Trade or sign a CF. If you can't pick up a new CF, Patterson gets one more chance before Hairston gets the job again. Trade or sign an RF Fill the rest of the bench with two kids and two FA vets not named Jose Macias or Neifi Perez (2 OF, one 1B, one util IF, one of which is also a solid PH).
  14. How is that true? Blanco catches specific pitchers, Barrett catches just about everybody else. Mr. Personal Catcher himself, Maddux, has been comfortable using Barrett. Maddux and Barrett had problems last year and for that reason Bako wound up catching most of Maddux's starts. Prior and Barrett also had problems last year and Blanco has wound up catching Prior most of this year. cera may not be absolute but you can't just dismiss it out of hand either. And let's face it, Blanco is a better defensive catcher than Barrett is. I'd still rather have Barrett's bat in the line-up though.

  16. I've got WGN thru DirecTV and I have the baseball package plus XM radio in my office. I generally don't have a problem finding a game unless it's blacked out for Fox on Saturday afternoons. We get all the Astros games anyway so even if DirecTV blacks it out I can watch it anyway.
  17. Regardless of what you think about Blanco the "pitchers are more comfortable with somebody other than Barrett" has been true both years he's been here. At some point that has to be more than luck.
  18. Seems unlikely at this point. You'd think so, although the national team played pretty well against the Orioles back in 1999. They'd have the advantage of being a true team versus a team of All-Stars, too. I hope they play so we get to find out. At the ASG last year I actually got a chance to ask Ben Sheets about pitching against Cuba in the 2000 Olympics. He said it was like facing a real good AA team. If they show up, they won't medal.
  19. Brilliant freakin' idea by Baker to have Blanco sacrifice with Patterson on third and the pitcher and Neifi coming up to bat. Patterson left at third. The stupidity of our manager never ceases to amaze me. BTW, Geovany Soto is still in the Witness Protection Program.
  20. Which is why they'll be working with a new pitching coach next year.
  21. No worries. It does look like Cuba's participation is unlikely. An official decision won't happen until December, though; and it sounded like Japan wasn't going to participate just a couple months ago so I'm still holding out hope. I'll be stunned if Cuba actually shows up for this tournament. They'll get their clocks cleaned by the DR, USA or Venezuela. Castro will come up with some excuse about capitalist entities trying to entice his guys into defecting as their reason for not participating.
  22. Cheater Julian Tavarez in the game for St. Louis now.
