  1. Soooo... Pecota likes Ryan Howard 538 PA .286/.375/.612
  2. I'm diggin the comparables list for Julio Franco.
  3. He had the surgery after the 2004 season, IIRC. And coming back the next season to log nearly 200 innings with an ERA hovering around 4 isn't exactly too shabby. The market value of that is a lot more than the million we're giving Miller. But if that isn't quite enough for you, Chris Carpenter had the same surgery after the 02 season. Then again, he spent the entirety of 2003 recovering before posting stellar years the last 2 times out.
  4. I like the move but lets not be overly optimistic. guys coming off labrum injuries are generally not very effective. Let's assume that's true, even forgetting guys like Matt Morris for a second. Say Miller doesn't pitch at all this year, he hates the city, and refuses to ever come back. We lost 1 million dollars and maybe got some bad publicity. That's really nothing in the big picture. This isn't a long-term contract that can lock us up in a bad situation for a few years. This isn't an expensive contract which will deter us from making any other moves that could help this club. But if things go well, maybe Miller reverts to his #2 starter form from the early 2000's. Even if for only a handful of starts... it's certainly better than putting Koronka on the mound again.
  5. For you guys wanting to bet... I'd probably go with PRAA. But hey, that's just me. And on-topic, I absolutely love this signing. It's the first move I can think of offhand that I've been enthusiastic about this entire offseason. Great potential to win big, with not much to lose.
  6. Why couldn't this have happened years ago when they hadn't fixed their obvious logjam? Oh well, Kearns is probably available now, or will be soon.
  7. Hendry's going to take off his belt and beat me until morning? It'd certainly be a welcome tradeoff from the year-long thrashing he typically causes.
  8. When I posted, I didn't see anybody else had posted it. After it was posted, I saw someone beat me to to. So I put in "Forget this post" type message in my thread. Yeah, same thing happened to me.
  9. Let's see, this year I got... License to Deal The Book on the Book Scout's Honor and last, but certainly not least... Saving the Pitcher. I think I'm gonna jump in on License to Deal first... by the way, if you haven't read The Hidden Game yet, you better get on it.
  10. I might be willing to trade Prior for Tejada, Bedard, and Markakis (sp?) ...but only if Markakis turned into Jeremy Hermida.
  11. For just a one-year contract, Santana. But if I had to worry about finances at all for the years to come, Peavy.
  12. On the opening day roster, or over the course of a season? If it's the opening day roster, I feel relatively comfortable in the fact that the Giants are going to have the record, if they don't already. But I wouldn't be surprised at all to see another team make some strange PR signings halfway through the season.
  13. I had to vote yes. He's an extremely borderline case for me. But not only did he win a Cy Young and go to the All Star game 6 times, but it's that damned split finger fastball. You have to give some credit to the guy for being the first truly successful person to use a certain pitch. I honestly think if he would have played past 35 and pitched league-average ball... we would see his saves total as high enough to wave him through without question. Again, it's extremely borderline, but I'd give him my vote.
  14. One thing to keep in mind, when evalutating the pythagorean projections on the standings, the Cubs would have been 86-76 according to those third order projections. And one huge thing that play an impact in the "luck" of said teams (mind you, we underperformed our projections by 6 games) is the ability of the bullpen. While that hasn't been applied well to said projections, you will notice that the teams that overperform significantly (or underperform, in our case) happen to have bullpens that reflect upon that situation, for the most part. So let's assume that the few offensive upgrades this year cancel out the career year of DLee. If the bullpen performs as expected, we could assume an 86 win year. If they perform better and the starting pitching stays healthy, we could be looking a lot better. That all being said, I still am not a fan of any single move made this offseason... but it's hardly a lost cause yet. Especially if we sign somebody like Eric Byrnes to platoon with Jones in right.
  15. The only way I'm giving up Prior in a deal with the Orioles is if I'm getting back Miggy, Brian Roberts, Bedard, Mora, and Chris Ray... and they'd have to be picking up a few bad contracts on the way back out. *coughHowry,Neifi&Eyrecough*
  16. Congratulations on your impending promotion.
  17. Oh, I'd just like to point this out before anybody else does... In 1998, the one and only year he pitched for the Cards... he posted a k/9 of 10.8 In the rest of his years combined, his k/9 rate has been 5.58. While I still don't like the signing... if his previous level of cards luck holds up, he'll be a monster. Then again, that one year he pitched 3 and a third innings and posted a 5.40 ERA... so you never know.
  18. I think if we were to trade Lee, we'd definately have to look at the Sexson trade a couple years back for a benchmark. The Brew crew gave up Sexson and Shane Nance for Junior Spivey, Lyle Overbay, Chad Moeller, Craig Counsell and Chris Capuano, plus Jorge de la Rosa. I think given Hendry's ability to fleece people in trades, we should definately be able to look at any trade and one-up that. And mind you, the Brewers got a former all star, a former NLCS MVP, a major league ready first baseman, a crappy catcher, a solid 22 year old major league ready pitching prospect, and a guy who won 18 games last year.
  19. I sincerely doubt this is anything good for the cardinals. His strikeout rate when healthy isn't anything to write home about... about 5 k/9. And his walk rate was only especially good in 04... still averaging slightly under 3 most of his other years. He can put up league-average numbers... especially with that defense behind him. But he wont do anything to earn the kind of money he's getting.
  20. On a side note... Does anybody else find it odd that the link points to the Atlanta Braves site on MLB.com?
  21. Garland's a free agent after next season. If the Orioles trade Tejada, it's guaranteed they're going into rebuilding mode. Somehow I don't think they'd do this deal just to dump salary, especially considering Tejada's impressively reasonable contract. They'll want good prospects. That's assuming Peter Angelos wouldn't fork over the necessary cash to sign Garland to an extension... which he obviously would.
  22. With as horrible as Baltimore's pitching is, that might be a decent trade for them... provided that they managed to put together an insanely good defense to deflate his numbers like they were last year. And Uribe aint bad, I always use him for my utility infielder on MVP 2005. :)
  23. Chris Young projects a lot like Mike Cameron... Definately a killer trade for the D'Backs.
