  1. Considering the type of guys on this team now (in particular, Dempster), I think he'd get along with everybody extremely well. Yeah, I think that's fairly well known about him. But given the way the Cubs put up with Burnitz last season, they're more than willing to accept streaky hitters. Hell, they kept Neifi going even after his one hot month. This is another one of those situations where the numbers don't show the same thing. While I'll grant that defensive numbers aren't completely accurate on a year-by-year basis, the fact is that he's not nearly as bad in the field as it looks like... kind of like a backwards Omar Vizquel. Well, considering the fact that Boston doesn't want anything to do with him, and absolutely nobody is looking at him as a potential starting right fielder, I think he'd take the job. He might not be happy all season... but damnit, we hired Dusty for his supposed "players' manager" title. I'm not really advocating handing him a buttload of cash and the starting job. IMHO he's just the sort of low-risk, high-reward player we should be targeting. Cause even if he's not doing wonderful and we sink to the cellar, some playoff bound team would be willing to take him off our hands for the rest of the season to cover for their injured starter.
  2. Isn't he pretty lousy defensively? Like really lousy? In 193 career games in left field, he's 2 runs above average. 170 games in right field, he's 9 runs below average. And in 425 games at first base, he's been 20 runs above average. (I omitted third base because he's only ever played 28 games there and hasn't since 2002.)
  3. Every time I think about Brad Ausmus getting a nice fat contract, I can't help but think about the comments BP made in their book last year. ...With John Buck out of the way and a $3 million salary in '05, he'll be the starter again, but Ausmus may be the worst regular in baseball.
  4. Now let me start this off by saying I know he's not a great option. He's injured about 20% of the time, and his drop in power last year when steroids were being tested for is certainly disconcerting. However, he's still a career .289/.365/.477 hitter... which is certainly better than Jacque Jones. What do you guys think? I'd probably throw 3-4 mil at him and offer him a chance to win a right field job. Even if he just throws up a 754 OPS like last year, he's still a more useful part off the bench than we're used to.
  5. Am I really expected to take this kind of abuse from a cardinals fan? I'm certainly aware that it's not the best idea in the world. But with the way this offseason has gone for the Cubs so far, coming up with scenarios (no matter how impossibly far-fetched) is certainly more entertaining than trying to sign Dusty to an extension. At any rate, I certainly made note of all the items you thought so important to mock me for in my original post. So if you're not gonna be offering constructive criticism, would you mind leaving me the hell alone?
  6. He's also in his contract year. I wouldn't want him if it took giving him an extension. But I'd certainly have to give thought to taking him for a single year.
  7. Per Rotoworld: Maybe we're looking in the wrong direction to solve our problem. Everybody knows Barrett isn't a wonderful defensive catcher. Javy isn't anymore either, but Barrett has the range to man an outfield corner (for heaven's sake, he was drafted as a shortstop). Javy could give us better than average production for a catcher, and Barrett would provide about average offense at a corner, provided he maintains last years numbers. Weak as shortstop is right now, a team can survive without much offense coming from it. And considering the abismal offerings in available outfielders, this might be a better move for us to make. Opinions?
  8. Dear god, this would make my year.
  9. Macias has apparently gotten an offer from the St. Louis Cardinals. It's for 3 years and 2.4 million dollars, and a rags-to-riches MVP season in 2006 after Pujols tragically dies in a plane crash during the preseason.
  10. Not guilty. But for Benitez... yeah.
  11. 1987 Indians had Steve Carlton and Phil Niekro for a while.
  12. 4 all-star caliber middle infielders in LA now... not too shabby. (Though I'll grant, Izturus isn't much of an all-star.)
  13. Also per rotoworld: The Dodgers are close to acquiring Alfonso Soriano for reliever Jonathon Broxton, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports. That would be a considerably smaller price tag than expected and more in line with what Soriano is worth[/i]
  14. Per Rotoworld: ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that Kris Benson is on his way to the Royals for Jeremy Affeldt and Mike MacDougal. Metsblog.com's Matthew Cerrone says it might be a prospect instead of MacDougal along with Affledt. The Royals can't give up both relievers for the right to pay Benson $15 million over the next two years.
  15. And where will he be the GM then? The sad thing is, it might depend on if he's able to ink Dusty to an extension before next year.
  16. But I'd venture that he's worth 7.5 million more than Neifi...
  17. Hendry will end up signing Furcal at 13 per. But that'll be in 3 years when his dodgers contract runs out.
  18. I've got a pint out too, but it's not cause I'm optomistic!
  19. We all know already that Atlanta will put together a better package than us for Lugo, cause they are actually capable of realistically evaluating talent and their needs. And we all know Dusty will start Cedeno over Neifi the day Lucifer calls to borrow my snowblower. It's a done deal, folks. Neifi's the everyday starting shortstop in '06
  20. I don't like Furcal that much, but this is still devastating for me. Why, you might ask? I think about the only (relatively) smart thing Hendry had every intention of doing this offseason was sign Furcal. This puts Neifi starting at short again everyday, as you have to believe that the Braves will put together a better package for Lugo. So I predict a frantic trade for Pierre to attempt to show Cubs fans that he's still trying to do something... and then we ink macias to a new deal and the offseason is done.
  21. What's the non-tender date again? I think it was Dec. 20th last year... I guess we'll know something definately by then, cause he's still just arbitration-eligible if I remember correctly.
  22. Sounds great to me if the prospect is either Kendry Morales or Brandon Wood. Otherwise, I'd rather hold on to the player that might still be in the league in 3 years.
  23. I seriously think if he signs Eyre, we should revoke his right to make free agent signings and force him to restock through trades.
  24. Well if we don't get him, it looks like we'd probably be facing him a bunch every year. Rotoworld just put up that he's narrowed his choices to the Cubs, Cards, Astros, and Braves.
