  1. What are the odds that we are the first team in history to not win a single game when the run differential is two or less? Almost negligible. We will start to win some of those games, of that I am sure. More than anything else, I'm impressed that we're playing such a high percentage of our games either in that level or by going ahead three or more runs. Bad teams aren't more likely to lose one or two run games than they are to get blown out... and the Cubs aren't getting blown out. This is bad luck, that's all. People just need to relax.
  2. It's pretty hard to hide them when your ace only goes 5.1 innings. zambrano, eyre, howry and soriano are the people most deserving of blame for this mess. izturis and miller are both complete disasters, but everyone knew that was going to happen. To be fair, a lot of us were none too enthused over the prospect of paying good money for Howry. And a lot of us were curled up in the fetal position sucking our thumbs when we found out what we were paying for that chump Eyre. Just think... if we weren't paying the contracts for Eyre, Howry, and Dempster, we could have afforded to trade for Abreu last year when the Phillies would give him to anybody with a couple warm bodies who didn't want them to pick up the contract. If I were the GM, I'd never pay more than about 2 mil to any reliever... if that even.

  5. I'd settle for a quick and/or painless death.
  6. Remember when I said in the 9th that using Theriot to pinch hit then was a dumb idea? This is why.
  7. Unless I'm mistaken, the only southpaws with 300 wins are Steve Carlton, Warren Spahn, Eddie Plank, and Lefty Grove. And I don't think any of them played for us.
  8. That was pretty stupid to pinch hit Theriot there. With two outs and nobody on, the odds of managing a run were quite small anyways. With Lee, Aramis, and Jones set to come up the next inning we were in a pretty powerful position to win the game. If Theriot were to get a hit, odds are we'd just waste DLee's at bat in a situation where he's not likely to help as much as he could just leading off next inning with a walk or something. It was a pretty shoddy use of available resources. The best way to manage the situation would have been to just let the pitcher make an out.
  9. Freaking WCIU, why must you not be available in this area? That sounded like a play I really wanted to see.
  10. We had a manager known as "The Peerless Leader." I'm kinda inclined to stick with him as our "best ever."
  11. No, Hamels is Santana with a huge track record of injury concerns. Health counts, and without Santana's track record of it, he'd rate below King Felix on the pure talent level.

  13. Does anybody know where I can find a list of steroid users caught by MLB testing? Or even a partial list? All I can think of are Palmeiro, Guillermo Mota, and Alex Sanchez, for some reason. I also know Turnbow and Sledge were caught by Olympic testing.
  14. I don't think anybody outside of Santana or Liriano can even think of laying claim to that.
  15. Sad that even after a 4.2 IP, 7 ER game, you might be right.
  16. Ron  Get better!
  17. Cubs are now 0-2 in my visits to Wrigley this season. The other game was the Lilly vs. Lohse pitching duel we lost 1-0. Why must the Cubs play such close an exciting games and then let me down?
  18. Who the devil are you comparing him to if it's not left fielders? Adam Everett? Yadier Molina? My guess would be that he's comparing him to all corner OF's-I mean, what is the only main difference between RF and LF? Defensive ability-and considering that Murton is about to have to move to RF to get playing time (with Soriano coming to left), comparing him against other RF'ers is probably more appropriate at this point. Well if we want to play that game, Soriano profiles more as a CF or RF than a LF. So we can still make the argument that with Soriano's defense in left and Pie in center, Murton only needs to play as well as a typical left fielder anyways. That's very true. With Soriano and Pie's range, Murton won't need quite the range that typically you'd need in RF. I'm not sure you're going to see that alignment for a while though-Pie still has a decent chance of being sent down late next week, and the lineup may have Jones in CF on a daily basis until he gets traded. I think (for no real reason whatsoever) we'll send the end of Jones as a Cub before too long. I'd be surprised if it goes on more than another 3 weeks.

  21. Jones will be shipped off in the next couple months. Floyd and Murton will play in right, and Pie will be in center.
  22. The words below average was describing his defense, not the overall player. On this team he should be getting the starts until there is someone better to take them from him. Floyd certainly isn't the answer but I don't think it's an outrage that Murton isn't getting the starts. Is Murton really a below average LF? He's hardly the best defender I've ever seen out there, but there aren't many good defenders in LF. Partial list Chris Duncan Adam Dunn Carlos Lee Moises Alou Pat Burrell Luis Gonzalez Barry Bonds Raul Ibanez Garrett Anderson Manny Ramirez All of those are worse defenders than Murton, and some by a great deal (Duncan, Dunn, Manny, Burrell) That floor is a huge distance from the ceiling. What's the gold standard in left now? Scott Podsednik? Carl Crawford? Hideki Matsui? Murton is definately closer to those three than he is to Ducan, Manny, Dunn, or Burrell.
