no, he didn't. pierre sucked, and pretty much everyone on this board knew he would. he made whatever hole in the lineup there was worse. and that's his fault, not pierre's. pierre did exactly what everyone thought he would do. just b/c hendry, espn and joe morgan say pierre is a good leadoff hitter, doesn't make it so. Yeah. I don't know of a single realistic person who thought Juan Pierre was even a good option for CF just for the money... let alone what we gave up to get him. And make no mistake, Juan Pierre isnt a leadoff hitter. He's a CF, and a subpar one.

I think this is a language barrier issue coming from Papi. It sounds like he's trying to say he used to take OTC supplements that may or may not be on the banned list now. Most supplements sold south of the border don't have good ingredient lists. Doesn't seem to me he's trying to say steroids so much.

Pudge >>>Barrett in '04 and we win the WC running away. To me, this was a critical move based on Barrett's awful D. We found an absolute bargain in Michael Barrett. Would you want to be paying Pudge's contract at this point? I certainly wouldn't. We're getting a lot more bang for our buck with Michael, and I have no problem with that. Dude, you don't understand baseball if you want an offensive-minded catcher. Blanco should be starting.

I'll be happy with either of them. Of course this is reading what others/scouts have said. I have not seen any of them play. I think we'd be best served to take Vitters. General consensus is that Wieters will slip because of his Boras connection... it's extremely doubtful he makes it to our supplemental pick, but it's a very remote possibility. I don't think Wieters is slipping just because of his Boras connection. His performance this season on its own probably wouldn't justify a top three pick, true... but his performance in the seasons prior plus everything else indicates that he's almost zero risk to be an above-average offensive catcher. But his performance this season seems to have diminished his upside in scouts' eyes... teams are gonna be pretty scared to deal with Boras for a guy that doesn't project for as much upside as he did last year... cause Boras is gonna negotiate like he's the next Joe Mauer.

You really can't draw any meaningful conclusions from one game. Yovani Gallardo on the other hand has a ton of minor league games under his belt with a very good track record. Most people place him directly behind Hughes, Bailey, and Lincecum in the pitching prospect rankings. He has major league quality stuff, too. This isn't Yusmeiro Petit syndrome where nobody knows why he's able to succeed in the minors. Gallardo is expected to perform at the highest level and he does. Ben Sheets may stay the ace of that pitching staff, but Gallardo is ready right now to give Capuano a run for #2. The Brewers are also holding Ryan Braun back from the majors at the moment for no apparent reason. With Craig Counsell and Tony Graffanino (sp?) at the hot corner right now, it wont take much for Braun to prove to be a large upgrade. Considering he could probably knock 15 dingers and steal 15 bases from this point out in the season, he'd go a long way towards making the Brewers as good in offense as they've performed to this point.

For the most part, Hendry survives as a GM simply because of his payroll. Obvious mistakes such as Pierre, Izturis, Neifi, Macias, etc... are made over and over again, simply because Hendry doesn't understand what makes for a good baseball team. Hendry has one real strong point, and that is his ability to trade for what he perceives as key pieces of the puzzle by only giving up spare parts. This is a double edged sword though. Without a great degree of baseball acumen, Hendry finds himself in a position where he can trade what amounts to nothing for Nomar and Murton... or trade Greg Maddux for Izturis, who is worth neither the money nor the roster spot. Go ahead and give Hendry credit for Aramis and Lee. Keep in mind though that every GM, no matter how crappy, makes a few great moves. Hell, even Jim Bowden... everybody's favourite punching bag... managed to trade for Kearns and Lopez while giving up nothing of any real value. Hendry isn't as bad as guys like Bowden, Bill Bavasi, or Wayne Krivsky... but he's a lot closer to that level than guys like Beane, Shapiro, or Jocketty.

I'd be more inclined to hold it. Then tell everybody that if I got enough donations (it could probably be six digits), I'd destroy it in some fantastic way with news cameras present for all the world to see. That way, you get the money, and then you rub it in Bonds' face that nobody likes him.

I believe that Cubs fans have to believe other teams will fall back and we will surge forward... otherwise the last century would have killed us.

Who are all more valuable than the slap-hitting Figgins. What can Figgins do that Theriot can't, anyway? Nevermind that, since when do those four players represent an archetype? They aren't even very similar at all, other than being white. Now, if he's saying that Murton projects to be a caucasian, then I'd have to agree wholeheartedly. And since when is Mientkiewicz an OF?

Are these guys pitchers? Price is a college lefty. Wieters is a college catcher. Porcello is a righty prep pitcher. Vitters is a prep 3B, and supposedly the best pure hitter in the draft.

Tampa Bay is almost certainly taking Price. Kansas City is interesting though. Personally I think they're going to take either Wieters or Porcello. If they take Wieters, I'm about 90% sure the Cubs take Vitters. If KC takes Porcello, I'd say it's about 60-40 Vitters-Wieters.

In Christina Kahrl's chat on BP, she said that apparently the draft is being slowed down to about five minutes per pick in the first round. No details on whether that applies to the supplemental first round and beyond, though... -
Well yes frankly it is a little hard to understand. He makes the Cubs better to have in CF then to not have him in CF. Who is going to out produce him? Pie is very questionable offensively and I don't see Soriano moving back there. Plus, I don't have a whole lot of faith in Hendry getting anything of value for him. So, for everyone that wants him traded, what do you think we could get? (reasonably) Pie is only questionable cause Lou isn't find him enough at bats. Even at that, he's 9 for his last 30 and he's got the potential to be better than Jacque with the bat right now. Bottom line is, moving to Pie in center really isn't a downgrade when factoring in defense... and there's more upside there for Pie. Meanwhile, Jacque is playing better than we can reasonably expect him to for the rest of the season, and we may be well served to see what we could get for him on the open market. Nobody here is suggesting that we just ship him off to whoever wont make us pay most of the contract... but if we can get a decent offer there is absolutely no reason not to trade him. He's redundant.

I don't have a huge problem with the way Lou has been deploying his bench. It's supposed to be a strength of the team (for once) and Lou is trying to use it to maximum value. I do wish he'd show more restraint with the bullpen, though. If puts Pie out in CF in the 7th inning, he can stay there through 22 innings, if need be. The same can not be said of our relievers. I'm not too comfortable the way we always go into the 9th with maybe two or three relievers available for the rest of the game.

Yeah, I've noticed this as well. This article seems to suggest otherwise, but I've always gotten that impression from Gammons' articles. I get the distinct impression that he's fed misinformation by every GM out there because they know he'll report it. They cover for that by telling him about crap like Rothschild giving him a book.
