  1. The follow people will have their salaries escalate between the 2008 and 2009 season. Zambrano (2.75 mil) Aramis (1.65 mil) Soriano (3 mil) Lilly (5 mil) Marquis (3.5 mil) DeRosa (.75 mil) And Wuertz should hit arbi in that time, so he'll cost an extra half mil or so too.
  2. I'm not sure if the extension has to be done before 2011 or not, but it's a fairly typical clause for japanese players coming over. It's how they avoid being under club control after their initial contract has run out. Not many veteran players from there would be too happy coming over if they had to sign a six year contract... and not many teams would like to risk that many years on imports.
  3. Burke, Qualls, and Guitierrez... one of the two remaining pitching prospects in the system. Houston now... 2B - Matsui CF - Bourn SS - Tejada 1B - Berkman LF - Lee RF - Pence C - Towles 3B - Wiggington SP1 - Oswalt SP2 - Rodriguez SP3 - Backe SP4 - Williams SP5 - Paulino And the only bench players they have of note are Ausmus, Loretta, and Blum... and the only bullpen guys of note are Valverde and Brocail. The only chance they have of competing is if everybody stays completely healthy, and that rotation really surprises... Honestly, they would have been better off just putting Guitierrez in the rotation than trading for a "proven closer." This isn't a steal at all.
  4. If Hendry gets Roberts for a package that looks something like Gallagher, Murton, and another pitching prospect, our team is gonna shake out something like this... (assuming Dempster bombs out of the SP role fairly quickly) LF - Soriano 2B - Roberts 1B - Lee 3B - Ramirez RF - Fukudome C - Soto CF - Pie SS - Theriot Bench: C - Blanco 1B/LF/RF - Ward 1B/2B/3B/RF - DeRosa SS - Cedeno OF - Pagan/Fuld (probably Pagan if healthy) SP1 - Z SP2 - Lilly SP3 - Hill SP4 - Marquis SP5 - Marshall Bullpen: Wood Marmol Howry Wuertz Dempster Lahey Eyre Cotts Marshall still has options, so picking up another starter wouldn't hurt anything... and if by chance Cedeno is included in a Roberts trade, we definately need to acquire a new SS, at least for the bench. And there certainly wont be enough room to add in any big bats to the bench.
  5. The difference is that they've got most of their team filled out with cheap, homegrown guys... Fielder, Weeks, Hardy, Braun, and Hart are all making league-minimum, IIRC. Not that spending money on the bullpen is a great investment, but they can afford to blow a bit of their cash on it since they aren't paying like we are for position players. Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, and Fukudome, Z, and Lilly alone is gonna cost us more than their entire team, most likely.
  6. I would rather keep Murton than Pie, too. However, we could find a lot better value for Pie/Gallagher that Brian freaking Roberts. For instance, Pie/Gallagher would be a real nice start on a Khalil Greene trade.
  7. I get the distinct impression Hendry and Lou have no intention of moving Fukudome to CF. And we wont ever move Soriano again.
  8. Leadoff hitter is up there too.
  9. John Kruk
  10. He's also the only one of their insiders thinking Pie would be in a deal.
  11. Honestly, I would feel fine going into the season if we replaced Theriot with Cedeno, and told Dempster he was staying in the pen and gave Marshall the #5 spot. I still wouldn't mind going after another starter, but I'd be confident enough to deal with it.
  12. My feelings also, pretty much. It sucks, but what can you do? Hey, anyone want my Prior road jersey? What size is it? How funky is it? Alright, I see I'm creating a windstorm. I'll send it to Laura to use as a future prize on NSBB. It's an XL and probably only worn 3 times. I hope it's a dance contest. I'll win that jersey!
  13. My feelings also, pretty much. It sucks, but what can you do? Hey, anyone want my Prior road jersey? Are you giving it away, or trying to sell it?
  14. I'm not getting into debates with lawyers, as I treasure my soul. However, I will say this and be off. Over the course of a 162 game baseball season, a quantitative approach has significantly more value than a qualitative approach. Most people simply do not have the mental capacity to temper selective perception and cognitive dissonance over such a long and involved timespan.
  15. If we could get him for under $1 mil, I'd consider it. But he isn't gonna be that cheap, and he's not good enough otherwise.
  16. Honestly saying numbers tell the whole story just boggles my mind. I understand the points that these guys are making but they simply do not tell the whole story. No, they don't. But they are a lot more effective than selective perception. I'm not trying to be rude here, as I do respect what you do. But this is a problem that every single person has. Some of us have taken to relying upon the numbers upon realizing that our memories are not flawless. I know I picked up on it after seeing some numbers about Mark Grace and his "clutch" ability. I had always thought he was nothing too special in those situations, but I saw a study that ranked him as one of the best of the last few decades. All I would do was dwell on the few times he had buggered up when I was watching, though. Again, I respect you a lot. But I think your opinion of Mark Prior has become so jaded that you're attributing characteristics to him that simply are not applicable.
  17. In 2003, Prior ranked #2 in QS% among pitchers with a minimum of 100 IP... .01 points behind Kevin Brown. Either he had his best stuff every day, or he managed to deal with it pretty damn well when he didn't, and he started getting hit.
  18. Cuse, c'mon man... stop while you have your dignity. We all respect your opinion most of the time, but you're over-stepping here.
  19. I just wish John Kruk would have been busted... Maybe that would've killed his BBTN career.
  20. great stuff, really. you think the reason his era with men on base is higher than his era with the bases empty is because...there's men on base?? that's like saying he gives up more grand slams when the bases are loaded than he does when the bases are empty or he gives up more stolen bases when there's guys on base. average against with men on base: .228 average against with the bases empty: .239 Numbers don't tell the whole story. They tell more of it than simple selective perception.
  21. Damn. If I knew he was that cheap, I would have actually supported him over Theriot. ...and I think I just felt my soul leave my body.
  22. Ouch. Sorry Raisin and MurtonFan... your lives are now forfeit.
  23. Even if that's why they did take it for injury recovery, does that make it less of a baseball sin? I don't care why they took it. It helped them "perform"...whether it was for strength or for injury recovery. I think it's a lesser evil, personally. I can understand doing whatever it takes to be able to get back to your previous levels when they have been unfairly ripped away from you do to some freak occurance. Creating a new level for yourself at the expense of others is a bit more selfish.
  24. I'd bet CT's life that Kevin Brown was a juicer. I'd be CT's life on 17 in roulette. Sucks to be you if you'd be CT''s life. You're one to talk, Mr. 10CT's.
