  1. I hope Dusty doesn't base the decision at shortstop based off of spring training. Cedeno proved himself in spring training and AAA last year, and winter ball this offseason, which should be more important than a few good weeks by Theriot. Spring training often doesn't showcase true talent. Our last shortstop who had a great spring training came out with a pretty awful regular season before tearing his groin.
  2. Is there a link to buy the Media Guide?
  3. Hitting 97 is usually a bad thing for Carlos - his fastball doesn't sink as much and tends to hover for hitters (I remember this happening a lot during the 2003 playoffs). On the bright side - does Z not get pumped up for any game?
  4. And when a Hummer isn't enough: http://www.forceprotection.net/images/tmp_main_image.jpg These are troop-carrying vehicles, but there has been some speculation that one of the aftermarket players might start refitting these for consumer use. Link
  5. Based on the news released, I don't think we should be too concerned about this. The problem is that the Cubs recently have not been forthright with injury information, specifically to Prior and Wood (the arthroscopic knee surgery news seemed to come out of nowhere). So when we hear news like this, the paranoia is due the worry that this is a larger problem than the Cubs are letting on, and if it is we won't find out about it until Prior heads to the DL. But I agree that the best thing to do is to hope for the best, and trust what Bruce says :D
  6. He's been a second-half pitcher the past few years. It sounds like this offseason he has been more committed to fitness and staying in shape, so hopefully he'll hit that post-ASB performance earlier on this year.
  7. I would have to agree. Sad thing is, if he comes out hot in April we'll probably have to live with him the whole season no matter how badly he tanks. A Neifi redux.
  8. Carlos is like The Natural - he can do anything. BTW I've been drinking and my man-love for Carlos is high.
  9. I like the fact that someone named TommyJohn made this post. Hope you're right TJ.
  10. I would disagree that Beck had the "it's over" quality. Even though he had 53 saves for us in 1998, there were too many times he would let on a baserunner or two before he got the outs.
  11. Yeah, just what we need - our new leadoff hitter on the shelf with 3 broken fingers. Pierre is the best bunter in the business. I'm sure he knows what he is doing, unorthodox or not. I'm sure he knows what he's doing, but he's still leaving his fingers susceptible, unnecessarily. Even if it works 99% of the time, it only takes once to ruin a season. Also his bathead is level, which goes against the fundamental bunting technique. Angling the bat up reduces popups and keeps those that do pop up from falling to the catcher.
  12. Awesome. Not the best bunting technique by Pierre, btw.
  13. Apologies. I avoided that thread as I'm not the biggest Olney fan. Mods feel free to lock
  14. In today's blog. Nothing very insightful, but he does mention the Cubs: Link, Insider account required FWIW, here's how many starts the front four and five of the most recent World Series champions have had: Starts by Team Front 4 Front 5 2005 ChiSox 130 152 2004 Red Sox 128 157 2003 Marlins 120 143 2002 Angels 122 140 2001 Diamondbacks 108 121 2000 Yankees 122 137 1999 Yankees 125 152 1998 Yankees 121 142 1997 Marlins 113 132 1996 Yankees 123 134
  15. Chase is a big issuer of both Visa and Mastercards, so this might be an agreement with the bank and the credit card companies. Credit card companies aren't competitors with banks as much as partners.
  16. Does anyone know if the Cubs get any revenue from the ads on the rooftops, like the Miller ads on Sheffield?
  17. The most exhilirating non-playoff series for me, ever. Sammy hit HRs 59-62 during that series, and Beck got the win in the last two games. Anyone else remember the walkoff HR by Orlando Merced? Nice videos Bixby.
  18. Great article Bruce :D
  19. Did I miss something? I thought Wood's rehab was going well and he was on track to miss no more than a week or two at the most. Now they're saying he could be out a month and a half or more? I've said for a while now that anything we get from Wood as a starter should be considered a bonus. I really think he's going to be in the bullpen or the DL most of the year. Agreed. While I hope he makes 20-30 starts, I don't think we should expect it. The Williamson trade possibility was the first I had heard of anything.
  20. I think the Yanks were afraid to risk Jeter's health with runners bearing down on him from behind when turning the doubleplay. It's a long shot that something would happen to Jeter, but I wouldn't risk $19M if I didn't have to. ARod is an immensely better defensive SS than Jeter, but I have no problem with them leaving Jeter at SS. I probably would have done the same in that situation. My understanding was that it was more of a gesture of goodwill and respect on ARod's part - his way of saying that the Yankees are Jeter's team and that he should change and adapt to be a part of the Yankees. Besides, with Jeter at 2nd or 3rd he wouldn't be able to make that 'backhand-grab of a grounder in the hole, jump and throw to first' move that Yankees fans point to when they say that Jeter deserves a Gold Glove.
  21. I don't get why it being an instinct move means anything. When George Constanza instinctively ran out of a smoke filled apartment by running over an old women and children, it was still a cowardly action. If an infielder saw that a runner was going to score, and he instinctively tripped him, would he not be called on it? And it wasn't as simple as you state. He wasn't just called out. He was called safe at first, and advanced on the bases. He protested when the call was eventually overturned and called correctly. Plus, it made for a fantastic photoshop opportunity. It wasn't so much that he tried to knock the ball away. It's that: 1) He did it in a relatively effeminate manner and 2) He acted like he did nothing wrong when he was standing on 2nd base and the umps were debating the call. In Peter Gammons' blog he takes some nice potshots at Rodriguez. After ARod showed up to NC State's baseball opener dressed in red, and then Cameron in a Duke jersey on back-to-back days: Ba-zing. 22. .247/.370/.617? That looks fantastic. Wait, what three stats are you comparing in that line? Usually it's AVG/OBP/SLG Apologies - I put his OBP/SLG/OPS split by mistake. His AVG/OBP/SLG for 2005 was .201/.247/.370.
  23. My favorite part of the whole Thomas ordeal is that he was unhappy that he was unhappy that he had a diminished skills clause in his contract. Thomas read the contract, signed it, and then complained about its contents.
  24. I definitely agree with you. The White Sox have placed either first or second in the AL Central every year since 1996 except for one, although a large part of that has been the relative weakness of the division during those years (the Sox won 52% of their regular season games during that span). If the Cubs won a World Series, I'd imagine that Hendry would get a decent helping of praise in the baseball press, similar to what Williams has gotten.
  25. I wouldn't mind seeing Sing given a shot - he's been pretty impressive offensively in Daytona and West Tennessee. Anything would be better than the .247/.370/.617 line that Jones put up against lefties last year.
