  1. Welcome to the forum jmajew. If we wanted to upgrade our defense, I don't think having Manny in left and Nomar at third would be the answer. Our defense could use some improvement no doubt, but I think improving our offense (specifically at the outfield positions) should be the focus of this offseason.
  2. A-Rod Bonds Edmonds
  3. By combining Burnett and Wood, we'd almost have a starting pitcher who could last the entire season. In all honesty while Burnett would not be my top choice for a starting pitcher, I give Hendry credit for making a run at the few quality free agents this offseason (if the story is true).
  4. Plus, it would keep Neifi! away. Until Ronny makes his first error and Dusty has to put in one of "his guys." If Gammons is correct, it will be interesting to see how patient he is with Murton and Cedeno in the starting lineup.
  5. During this past season he said he wants to stay in NY for the rest of his career.
  6. It's a weak story for A-Rod bashers to latch on to and exaggerate the effects on his play from it. And since I'm an A-Rod basher, I will say this proves him to be a self-centered crybaby loser that doesn't come through in the playoffs.
  7. Does anyone know the teams who are expected to make a run at Millwood?
  8. hyperbole If Prior, Z and Wood are all healthy, the Cubs can beat anyone. That's proven to be a big if. The law of averages are with the Cubs. Hopefully the baseball gods are too. Prior and Z should be fine. If Wood goes down again, I hope he isn't wearing Cubbie blue after 2006. We haven't won the World Series in 97 years. If the law of averages applies to baseball, it certainly is not with the Cubs.
  9. Great post/article. A good summary of what went well for Derrek this year, and what went wrong for the lineup in front of him.

  11. It's interesting to read people's opinions here about Ronny. It seems like since he's not expected to perform up to his full potential in 2006, we should look elsewhere, ie to Furcal. Unless the Cubs snag Giles and keep their starting pitching healthy (which seems to be two big ifs), I don't think the team will be in a position to contend next year. Given that, I say we let Ronny play and develop and be patient with him. This will also give Murton a chance to develop in the majors and also get some PAs against right-handed pitching. We could then have two solid contributors for 2007, with Pie hopefully being polished enough by then to make a significant contribution. With three players providing offense for little money, we could make a splash in the 2007 FA market (Dunn anyone?) and make a serious run starting then. Oh wait, our manager doesn't believe in patience and would never let Ronny or Murton develop. :x :x :x :x
  12. There are two teams if you read between the lines of what his agent has said: Anaheim and Cleveland. Cleveland basically said thanks, but no thanks to Manny. Anaheim looks like his best option.
  13. Given his lack of experience, his lack of mobility, and his throwing problems, I'd rather not see Nomar in the outfield.
  14. I'll say even money that he ends the season on the IR. DL. Basketball and Football seeping in? Ha - you know it.
  15. I'll say even money that he ends the season on the IR.
  16. Also catch this gem at the end: "If you have to wonder why the Colorado Rockies remain one of baseball's worst teams, Tracy Ringolsby writes: "Right-hander Pedro Astacio and infielder Neifi Perez, both former Rockies, are on the list of players the team has interest in signing this off-season." Way to shoot for the moon, Dan O'Dowd."
  17. Are you saying Schilling won the World Series all by himself? Not at all. I'm saying Schilling wanted to be the guy that people pointed to and said "He came here, and we finally won." Undeserved or deservingly. My understanding of the situation is that Schilling had spoken to Red Sox upper management, and was on the fence as to whether or not he was going to accept the trade. One of the main factors that convinced him to go to Boston was the passion of the fans in Boston, on SOSH, and everywhere else, and the fact that they conveyed this passion to him during Thanksgiving weekend, when baseball isn't on the forefront of most people's minds. Granted, this story was originally related to me someone who posts on SOSH, so it might be inflating the effects the fans had on Schilling. If Epstein did in fact have a much larger hand in bringing Schilling in, then I was mistaken and posted "one of the most inaccurate things" Goony has ever read.
  18. Agreed..... if CF isn't high on Hendry's list, my fear is that he believes Pie will be ready next year to play full time.
  19. Epstein shouldn't get credit for bringing in Schilling. Schilling came to the Red Sox to be a part of the atmosphere of the Red Sox, and because he wanted to be the guy who brought a World Series to Boston. Whether Epstein or Dan Duquette was running the team, Schilling was going to Boston. You can't blame Epstein for looking for more money though. His value will never be higher.
  20. Two knocks on Burnett: 1) He hasn't shown any durability - he's only made it over 200 innings twice in his career. 2) His home/road splits show him to get a decent benefit from pitching half the time in Pro Player/Dolphins stadium. It's the reverse of Derrek Lee. I say let some other team pay too much and not get the performance out of him.
  21. Or in nine years
  22. Is it? Or does it seem that way because in recent years our right-fielders haven't been like Ichiro? Mench does not put up nearly as good numbers on the road as he does in Arlington. Like most people here I'd like to see if Giles is available before going after Mench.
  23. Maybe on the morning show. C'mon, get serious. If the Cubs were in the World Series, WGN would dedicate at least an hour for pre-game, and who knows how long the post-game and news spot would be. It would actually be nice to find out, but alas, it was not to be this year....I woder if it ever will?! If I remember correctly, WGN spent far more than the previously mentioned ten minutes on the Cubs during the 2003 NLCS.
  24. Bill Gates's former Microsoft colleague, Paul Allen, is the owner of the Portland Trailblazers and the Seattle Seahawks. Given the state of the Trailblazers alone, maybe having a Microsoft billionaire as your owner isn't always the best thing. :D
