  1. One of the organizers has sent emails out to various Cubs blogs with more information. Here's a link to one of the emails with more information.
  2. Will Carroll has a mention of Prior and Wood in his BP column (subscription required) today. He expects Wood's shoulder soreness to get better over time "given the proper rest." He also refers to Wood as a "new father" ... I know the Woods were expecting a baby, I missed the news that the baby had arrived. He mentions the idea that Prior's lost velocity may be due to reluctance on Prior's part to "letting it go" and that this is common among pitchers returning from injury. Prior will probably get another rookie level start, then head to the minors for 2 rehab starts.
  3. I thought it was better news than saying he could be the next Mark Fidrych.
  4. The Goatriders blog had an interesting take on the Maddux-bat escapade.
  5. Jose Contreras actually had a similar diagnosis to Prior -- a subscapularis strain of the right shoulder -- in 2003. He ended up missing more than half the season, wasn't as effective in 2004 and of course ended up being traded to the White Sox for Esteban Loaiza amidst talk that he lacked mental toughness.
  6. Stupid Mets, don't they know it's WAY TOO EARLY to make any trades?
  7. Well, Maddux is the toughest man on the team now.
  8. As I noted in one of the other threads, I don't see what the big deal would be if they did move him back a day ... which would keep him on the same schedule as he would be on if the Cubs had a bona fide 5th starter. Insisting on going to a 4-man once through the rotation because of the off-day just pushes the day of reckoning back two days to Tuesday. Why not just plan on Wood starting on Monday ... I don't get it.
  9. That's why I was kind of hoping someone else heard the full interview. I don't know whether the focus was on Prior because of rumors or whether Stark was just asked about the possibility of dealing Prior.
  10. On the Score this morning they were saying that MacPhail flew down to Florida, supposedly to "get the tenor of the mood in the clubhouse." I don't know if this was mentioned during the broadcast last night. Speculation was ripe that a coach or two will soon be sacrificed to appease the angry baseball gods as an interim measure.
  11. Jayson Starke was on the Mike & Mike show (ESPN 1000 morning show for Chicagoans) this morning and said that the Cubs weren't actively shopping Prior, buuuuut they would certainly would be listening to serious offers this season barring a miraculous recovery by the team. Cubs management types aren't sure whether Prior will ever be the type of consistent innings-eater that he was drafted to become. They do apparently believe, however, that he will be highly effective when he does pitch (or at least that would be the marketing strategy if they were to market him, which Starke repeatedly said that they weren't actively doing). He said Prior would carry a high price tag if he were to be dealt. Somewhat obviously, Prior needs to take the mound at some point for any plausible trade scenarios. There weren't any potential trade partners mentioned. I didn't hear the original session with Starke. I just heard a recap of it while driving, so if anyone heard the full interview, please chime in. Nothing earthshattering, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
  12. I was a Hendry supporter back in the day. He seems committed to going down with the ship. Frankly, I don't care anymore whether Hendry wanted so-and-so or Dusty wanted so-and-so ... Hendry is the GM and it's his call on how to construct the team. He's done a damn poor job of it. It's time for him to go. It's also time for MacPhail to go ... I guess that's a different thread, though.
  13. Since a couple of people have asked ... I submitted my comments to Gammons through the ESPN web interface. Here's the LINK. He may have a regular espn.com email addy, but I don't know what it is. I just thanked him for pointing out some of the obvious problems with the Cubs team. And refrained from adding in any extraneous ESPN rants.
  14. :-k "I'll settle for that true outcome."
  15. Welcome to the forums! (albeit in trying times)
  16. It usually takes Bellhorn about 12 pitches to walk. :D
  17. You dismiss is out of hand saying it would have been unpopular here ... hindsight works both ways. It's pretty easy to say they should have found someone better to pitch for them ... I agree that the drafting has overall been disappointing (especially given that a number of the upper prospects/rooks used to be signed out of Latin America, and from what I've hear, the Cubs haven't been spending the resources there that they used to). I would like to see a more balanced approach to drafting ... pretend you have a budget next time, Jim. But I also think that there's a BOOM-BUST expectation level among Cubs fans when it comes to prospects, and that's completely unrealistic. If someone isn't a White Knight riding out of AA to save the franchise ... they SUCK. Part of the point of having a decent farm system is to provide the "good-enough" backups so you can pay for the high-dollar glamour studs.
  18. Last time I went to a Cubs - Rockies game, it was at Mile High!
  19. Who should have been starting instead of Hill and Guzman? I've seen the stat that the Cubs have gone 1-15 in the "#5 starter position" ... but I honestly don't know how that #5 position was computed. I think the 1 win was Rusch vs. the Pirates. ETA: to change the verb tense re who should have been starting
  20. Misery loves company, let's chill out just a little bit.
  21. Out of spite against whom? Cubs fans? Whatever. You believe in your conspiracy, and I'll believe in my conspiracy. And the reality is....Hendry has FAILED to do his job. Baker's teams have progressively gotten worse since he started in 2003, and thus FAILED. And the players have FAILED. Everyone's frustrated. I wasn't actually advocating a conspiracy. I'd spell it out if I were. I was just wondering what you thought the spite was about, since you were the person who brought it up. If you don't want to talk about it, that's OK BY ME.
  22. too bad the contract extension likely isn't contingent on the announcement. True. The emphasis on the announcement could just be a diversionary tactic. Local media sure thinks it's in the bag. But ... still ... absent the announcement, there's still hope. Maybe even hope that Dusty will be quietly exploring other job possibilities as well.
  23. Oh dear, the announcement has to pushed back again.
