1. The one thing about these draft pick calculators that I don't like is that while you can place a particular value on them if it was just a mutually needed trade, but more weight needs to be considered when it's one team wanting to improve their draft position. So Miami wanting to go from 11 to 8 to increase their chances of getting a QB has to make giving up your 8th pick more valuable to the Bears. If they are going to be willing to move down 3 places, you have to be willing to make it worth it. That's not to say that I wouldn't be willing to change it to a 4th or even a 5th if Drake was included in the deal, but right now it seems like an overpay by the Bears. Landry is not going to be cheap if they can work out a long term deal. Howard is less than a million a year for the next two years, which allows Miami some nice cap relief while shedding the $16m they will owe Landry if they can't trade him. Miami chose to tag Landry even though extension discussions haven't been going well. It's well documented this offseason. Miami pretty much screwed the pooch in tagging him, because tagging him for the second time makes his contract for 2018 $16m. There is absolutely no reason for a team to massively or even slightly overpay in a trade for Landry, and Miami shouldn't expect to get the better end of the deal.
2. I have been looking at this deal, and I'd say if the Dolphins added Kenyan Drake, it would be a lot more even. The #8 pick is the most valuable piece in this deal The #11 is the second most valuable piece in this deal Howard is the 3rd most valuable Landry is the 4th The 3rd round pick is last. So we are giving up the best draft pick and the best player in this deal for a team that is pretty much forced to trade this guy. Drake can catch the ball out of the backfield and appeared to be showing signs of being an NFL lead back. The Dolphins even traded Ajayi midseason, in what appeared to be a door opener for Drake or Damian Williams to take over. Now they get a sure thing in Howard and they get out from the huge contract they are stuck with by tagging Landry. And they move up three places for a better chance to draft a QB. Still not sure I like giving up Howard. Maybe he can't catch the ball all that well, but Cohen and Cunningham can.
3. Walter is exempt from this list, because he is the greatest running back of all time. Hell, he's damn near the greatest human being of all time.
4. Willie Young is being cut loose. Not sure I like both Young and McPhee being let go. Figured one of Sitton, McPhee and Young could be salvaged while still dumping most of the others. That leaves Massie as the only one of that bunch that I'd probably hang onto, and only if they felt they couldn't improve RT. The game isn't to see who can create the most cap space. I guess we have to hope good players start getting cut because of cap issues.
5. Richard Dent and Wilbur Marshall were favorites of mine. Singletary, Marshall and Wilson together on the field at the same time really made me happy. It didn't happen a lot because Wilson was injured a lot. That front 7 was the best.
6. i remember mike freeman now solely because i remember going who the hell is mike freeman for like 12 games last year well clearly he's on steroids so color me intrigued for his 2018 campaign If there was ever a ballplayer who SHOULD pop/inject/snort some PED's, it's Mike Freeman.
7. Looking forward to see who all of the other #4's Darvish will be facing all year. LOL. I’d venture to guess it doesn’t work that way over the course of a year. Every pitcher probably faces around the same amount of other teams 1, 2, 3, 4, 5+ starters given off days, injuries, rotation shuffled around, etc. Just because Lester is our “#1” starter doesn’t meant he’s going to face more #1s or staff aces than anyone else in the rotation throughout the year. He’ll face just as many back of rotation guys as he will Scherzer’s, Kershaws, C-Marts, Syndergaards, etc. Well of course it doesn't work out that way. But it's still fun to think about Darvish matching up against all of the other team's #4's all season long.
8. This makes me think of Franks and Beans from Something About Mary.
9. Looking forward to see who all of the other #4's Darvish will be facing all year. LOL.
10. So... Best case scenario is he goes 1-for the rest of spring. Worst case scenario is he blows his knee out. Because of this post, I now know that Mike Freeman used up his rookie status in 2017, thus cannot win ROY this year. Freeman played for 3 different teams last year, with his work with the Cubs far better than his work with the Padres and Mariners. His stats are trending in the right direction! His major league pitching stats are much better than his hitting stats, but that's not saying much. All in all, I now have a visual of opposing teams lobbing up underhand pitches to Freeman in hopes that the Cubs keep Freeman over Russell and Baez based on Spring Training stats. I used to be able to easily find the link to minor league stats on baseball.reference, but I guess they like playing hide and seek.
11. Miss the Olympics? Here's your recap!
12. I would think Landry would have a good case if he filed a grievance against the Dolphins, which would then make him a free agent once again. However, he might also be licking his lips at the though of making $16m next year.
13. Yep. I could go for that.
14. Jerrell Freeman has been let go. That was probably the easiest one to predict after Glennon.
15. I guess the shift of Myers to 1b wasn't because he couldn't play outfield anymore. He's only logged 50 games in the outfield in the last 3 years, and 40 of those were in 2015.
16. Lester needs to give it up. If Bryce is signing for such a small portion of what he could get anywhere else, he must also take one for the team.
17. Definitely feels like a statement to remove doubt that the Cubs were afraid of Arrieta's health. The Cubs offered up extensions and Jake rejected them, with the intent of looking for his big payday. I'm sure the Cubs hope he gets it, but there have not been any leaks on the Cubs showing any interest in signing Jake. If the Cubs had a big offer out to him, you know Boras would be using that offer to up the bidding from anyone else looking for pitching help. Arrieta's market has been quiet to the point of obscene.
18. Imagining a trade deadline one half a season before a lot of top tier players become free agents could create some good deals while teams try to free up salary/contract guarantees before the free agent window opens. I'd rather wait and see if there are some needs/deals at the deadline rather than use up what remains of their budget under the cap.
19. Might they also land a high quality arm with the compensation pick for Arrieta?
20. Yay! Let's hope he gets all 150m because it will mean he earned all of the incentives!
21. Pretty sure Yu wouldn't want a no trade clause in his contract if he signs with Milwaukee. More like a you must trade me clause.
22. I'll take "Who is Ervin Santana" for $500, Alex.
23. I have it from a completely unreliable source that Yu Darvish is a member of this site and reads it daily. He hasn't signed yet because he finds this thread funny, and he never wants the funny to end.
24. It's a 10 game suspension. We need to move on from Freeman. I'm not so sure he would even beat out Kwiatkoski after such a long layoff.
