  1. I really don't understand why that's funny. If you are in rebuild mode, the guys you sell your talent for are guys who can eventually be an impact player at the major league level. As it stands, the Orioles would essentially be trading one of their better players for 3 huge question marks. Matt Murton would be a nice platoon player with Luke Scott, but that's probably all he'll be since Markakis occupies the other corner outfield spot. And since Murton is RH, Scott will likely get more at bats. Gallagher probably slots into their rotation, but this is a guy who was going to be battling with several pitchers in the Cubs organization for a rotation spot. Eric Patterson? He "could" open up in CF, but he's got how much experience playing CF? Not much. Add that in with really no reliable info on how his minor league numbers will translate to the major league level, and I can definitely see why Orioles fans would balk on such a return.
  2. No.
  3. Yeah, I've always found that to be rather lame. Prince Fielder's last month in 2007: .333 .478 .733 If Prince Fielder isn't worn out, how can Theriot be worn out late in the season?
  4. This observation doesn't hold. When you have a lot of range, you're going to have a lot more off-balanced throws, and correspondingly more errors. So you should expect more throwing errors from a wide-ranging SS. The observation should be: a percentage of the balls he will get to will result in errors, but the alternative without the range was a base hit, so you live with the extra couple of errors to get the base-hits-turned-into-outs from the extra range and accurate throws. Well put.
  5. It was in the Fukudome press conference thread in Transactions. Someone else said that the very same ESPN projected line up had Blanco behind the dish rather than Soto. In other words, I wouldn't put much stock into it.
  6. If you're going to sign guys to 9 figure deals, you have to go for it. Otherwise it just doesn't make any sense. If Hendry dumps the farm and gets Roberts, Figgins and Blanton, he's definitely going for it.
  7. I'm trying to figure out if all of these deals are all related to each other. I can't imagine how, because I really don't think the Cubs have enough prospects to get Roberts, Figgins and Blanton. And if they get all of these guys, I hope the next owner is ready to pay out some serious cash to retain all of these guys. You would think that Pie and Soto and possibly even Cedeno would be needed to balance out the escalating big contracts. Any ideas how much talent the Cubs give up for these three guys? 1. Roberts for Gallagher, Murton and Patterson 2. Blanton for Pie and who else? 3. Figgins for ??? This would definitely be using the farm to "go for it", and I'm not opposed to "going for it". In fact, I rather prefer it. But, the farm will be looking rather glib for the next several years, so they better go all the way.
  8. Angel Pagan. He could beat out Fuld for the job, but I think it'll be a close race and will likely be decided by who has a better ST.
  9. I think this joke has run its course.
  10. Exactly. Theriot or Cedeno can be used in a double switch later to improve "D" at short if necessary.
  11. Agreed. I think he will, also. Theriot would make for a decent super sub. DeRosa would become the best option to play SS, ahead of Cedeno.
  12. I'm not following this "marginal upgrade" term. Mark DeRosa is a significant upgrade over Mike Fontenot. Mark DeRosa is a significant upgrade over Ryan Theriot. Mark DeRosa is a significant upgrade over any other bench player. Brian Roberts is a marginal upgrade over Mark DeRosa. I have 3 significant upgrades and one marginal. To me, that's significant.
  13. If you are the Orioles, would you still feel convinced that Murton, Patterson and Gallagher is enough for Roberts? I don't think I would be happy with that package. Realistically, they can rebuild with Roberts just as easily as they can rebuild without him. In other words, without a blue chip prospect being offered in return, I'm not so sure I'd be satisfied with that package. The Orioles already have the corner outfield spots covered with Markakis and Luke Scott. I suppose Murton can platoon with Scott to get full value out of that corner OF spot, but essentially they are getting a little used corner outfielder in Murton. Patterson has a shot of starting in CF, but he's a relative unknown AND is still fairly new to the position. Gallagher is obviously the best player in this package considering just about every team is looking for pitching, but he also isn't a top prospect and doesn't have much experience at the major league level. I agree the team needs to rebuild, but if I was Angelos, I'd have some concern about the return value on parting with a quality 2b.
  14. 2007 lead off hitter: 97 runs scored in 135 games 2006 lead off hitter: 87 runs scored in 162 games 2007 lead off hitter: not a traditional leadoff hitter. 2006 lead off hitter: traditional lead off hitter. 2007 lead off hitter: .299 .337 .560 2006 lead off hitter: .292 .330 .388 2007 lead off hitter: Alfonso Soriano 2006 lead off hitter: Juan Pierre Many "traditional" lead off hitters should never hit higher than 8th on any line up card. I'll take Soriano hitting lead off for the Cubs over Juan Pierre 8 days a week for many reasons, not just one.
  15. No love for Colorado? Hmm. I might like them more than the Dodgers.
  16. I'd actually be okay with this deal. I'd rather see Marshall in the trade rather than Gallagher, but I like what Roberts brings to the team. No, not PED's. :D
  17. Too late. I already rushed to judgment. But, more for the lying than the actual usage of PED's.
  18. Even if they did offer arbitration, there's no possible way Lofton could have been on the "A" list, could he?
  19. If I'm understanding this thread correctly, we're all supposed to be mad at Mark Prior because Houston offered him a contract which he has yet to agree to? I don't like that Prior is gone, but as long as he doesn't do something crazy like hit Derrek Lee in the knee with a lead pipe on his way out of town, I can't really be upset with Mark. We don't have all the inside info, but it's been pretty obvious to me for quite some time that Prior wasn't happy in Chicago and he wanted out. Whether he wanted out because he blames Cubs management for ruining his throwing arm or the fans have given him a hard time, or a little bit of both, or even something entirely different is uncertain, but what's done is done and that Hendry couldn't work something out for him to come back is not something I'm going to blame Hendry for.
  20. If they want to. The arbitration thing is done, however. Oh, I thought he accepted arbitration. Nevermind. :D
  21. This trade makes me wonder what will happen with Mike Cameron. San Diego offered arbitration and I believe Cameron was an "A" free agent, therefore whoever signs him will lose draft picks. Between losing draft picks and not being available for 25 games, I'm curious if Cameron will get the Todd Walker treatment by San Diego next year if no one signs him? For those that don't remember, the Padres offered Walker arbitration. Walker won his arbitration and elected to accept arby and stay with the Padres. The Padres lost the arbitration case, signed Marcus Giles and cut Todd Walker. The Padres have 2 situations this offseason that could end up just like the Walker situation last year. Michael Barrett also accepted arby from the Padres. He stands to win his arby case to the tune of 5m to be the back up catcher to Josh Bard. If Cameron wins his case and no one signs him, he also stands to make quite a bit. Who plays CF? I think this will be interesting to watch unfold this offseason.
  22. Exactly. Clemens will be hated even more for lying.
  23. The Twins offered Santana a pretty enormous deal that he rejected. I'd say the Twins have some spending cash once they move Santana.
