Rupert Murdoch, I think. That's what I was thinking it was, but it didn't sound right when I typed it up, so I replaced the last name with "somebody". At least I didn't say Rupert Holmes. :grin:

Ouch. I might have given some bad information in the game chat, Juan. The recently overturned trade of Dana Eveland for a minor leaguer is the transaction that requires immediate attention. According to your rule above, any year with less than 50/5/10 would be considered an exclusion from an exempt year. I assumed the rule was strictly for guys who have yet to cross that plateau. By your wording of the rule above, even though Eveland pitched enough innings in '05 and '06, he would regain a year of exemption status with only 5 innings pitched (1 start) in '07. That, or the wording needs to be changed. I made the mistake of assuming that once a player crossed the plateau of 50/5/10, that any year after that if they got even one inning or one plate appearance it would cost them an exemption. So, we need to clarify this one quickly in case these guys want to go ahead and reverse that trade again.

I heard that the hang up on the Washburn deal was that the Yankees would pick up the entire contract, but were not willing to give up a prospect on top of that. -
I'm hoping Cuban gets in, but whoever does win the bid and gets approved to be the new owner of the Cubs understands that there is a whole new climate in Chicago to win. I'd be furious if the new owner spent beyond their means to purchase the club and then dumped salary for the sake of recovering quickly the sunk cost. That's what the Dodgers owner did (Rupert somebody). The new owner will need to be able to meet the financial obligations of fielding a competitive team every year. The loveable losers tag is long gone, IMO. I think that's the one thing we can look back on the Andy MacPhail era and say was a true positive. He was able to increase payroll from the mid 60m's to above 100m from a publicly held corporation. That's saying something.

The only thing I'd really question about last night's game would be Zambrano pitching the 8th and Eyre not getting a little easy work if he's truly on the trade block. I suppose Eyre might be one of those guys who could clear waivers and get traded after the trade deadline, but I really don't want to see him in there in a close game against the Brewers, so last night was an ideal situation for him to work the 8th. -

However, how boring would a discussion board really be if there was never anything to question. Someone would start a post, and all the responses would simply be "I agree". How fun would that be? Which is why I was willing to trade him also. I don't remember what I got but I remember thinking later it was a silly move on my part. I think Braun is just not likeable. You got Tillman and a 2nd round draft pick. I thought he was referring to Braun. Braun, Carlos Gonzalez and Brian Barton for Matt Cain, Joe Crede, Conor Jackson and Andy LaRoche

Yeah, that's not true. Zambrano, Webb, Halladay, Sabathia, and Haren are better. And if you're using the "if healthy" prerequisite, Hamels, Lackey, Carmona, Beckett, Kazmir, Cain, Lincecum, Sheets, and Harden are probably all better too. '05: 2.95 ERA/1.21 WHIP/ 144 ERA+ '06: 2.98 ERA/1.16 WHIP/ 149 ERA+ '07: 3.18 ERA/1.32 WHIP/ 138 ERA+ Career: 3.20 ERA/1.21 WHIP/ 139 ERA+ Granted, he's been off this year, but with his career numbers, there's no reason to believe he can't get back to those numbers. I think that's better than several of the pitchers you listed. I guess I value Oswalt more than others. Realistically, the trade was Ryan Braun for Alex Gordon and Roy Oswalt. I only included Gallagher because he was the odd man out with the roster crunch. Since it really didn't matter to me whether I dropped him or included him in the trade, I made nice and included him.

I made a pretty big offer for King Felix about a week ago. Luckily, it wasn't accepted, because I didn't realize Felix is out of exemptions. I'm not really sure why anyone is having such a cow about this being a lopsided trade. Gordon is obviously not the player Braun is, but Braun won't be 3b eligible after this season, so he's an outfielder. I don't really want to go into the next season with no options at 1b or 3b like I basically have every season I've been in this league. Oswalt is as good as anyone else in the league (except Peavy and Santana) when he's healthy.

Why would this trade piss you off? Have you not read the on the block pages lately? I said Braun could be had, so everyone had a chance to make an offer for him, including you. Oswalt hasn't been good most of the year, but I think his down year allows me to keep him for next year rather than having to trade him off in the offseason, like many of you will have to do. Since I missed the heart of the trade deadline activity (on vacation), I think my window to be one of the elite teams going forward also passed. Raisin and Tim are both clearly stronger teams.

As far as I know, you can include cash in post deadline waiver deals. If the Cubs picked up half of the remainder of his contract, they could probably get a halfway decent prospect in return and be out from under the obligation. -
If I win I am right back in the playoff race. If I lose I am out, and I have plenty of pieces I could sell high. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year, and I have already exceeded expectations too. The bad news is that the trade deadline ends before this week is over. And I owe you big time for the ass whoopin' you put on me earlier in the year. I see that both of our pitching staffs have excellent match ups this week, so it should be really interesting and potentially high scoring. Good luck.

Isn't Marquis one of those types of guys who could still be traded up until August 31? Run him through waivers and give yourself an extra month to move him. -
While I couldn't afford to give up one of my active major leaguers, I would have offered up a quality minor leaguer or a draft pick for him if I knew he was available. It would have been well worth the gamble if he even remotely resembled what he once was.

I'm still trying to figure out why Carpenter was even cut loose at this point. Seemed like a pretty valuable keeper for next year to me. That's what I'm kind of hoping to get from Kelvim Escobar and Vernon Wells, actually. I would have traded some talent for him.

Maybe you just create a rule that DL players are not eligible to be picked up, that way they can't be stashed. Admittedly, I have picked up DL players for the sole purpose of stashing them. But, in this day and age of MLB, players get hurt. I've had as many as 6 guys on my major league roster all on the DL at the same time within the last year and a half, and I know Tim was jonesing for a healthy guy or two earlier this season. In other words, I would like to see the DL stay somewhat similar to the league we are currently playing in. If you want to prevent "stashing", create a rule that says that DL players can't be signed for the sole purpose of stashing. I think that would prevent what you are opposed to. In the case of Francisco Liriano, I don't see why Adam couldn't stash him on his DL since he had him from the start, but I wouldn't have been able to pick up Kelvim Escobar and stash him as a free keeper for next year (excluding the salary structure that I'm unfamiliar with for this new league.

While I can't argue with most everyone on the list, Vernon Wells has missed a significant portion of this season because of injuries. I think the book is still out on whether his status as a perennial all star is done.

Actually, he did. If you watch the end of the 5 minute clip that was linked earlier this thread, you see him getting angry at the crowd and he gets restrained (full bear hug) by one of his teammates and he has a bat in his hands!!! Yeah, that was not a pretty sight. I think he just pitched his final game in this country. Between throwing the ball at a high rate of speed in the general direction of innocent bystanders (ballplayers or fans alike) and threatening to attack fans with a baseball bat in his hands, he's done.
