  1. At the same time, why trade for Gregg now with Wood still potentially in the fold? Could have traded for him after it was determined Wood would not be back. Why not package Ceda and other prospects for Hermida instead? Something doesn't make sense about this unless it's leading to another trade. And nobody likes making 3 and 4 team trades more than Hendry.
  2. I think you are overthinking things. Hendry wanted a closer for insurance in case Kerry leaves and made a stupid move. I probably am, but don't kill my optimism. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I have to believe something is up. Although, I'm a bit scared that the person who just mentioned Marmol possibly being in the deal could be right.
  3. I think he made 2.5m this past year, and is arby eligible this year. The Padres were offering Hoffman 4m, so maybe the Padres could avoid arby with Gregg and get him for somewhere in the neighborhood of what Hoffman was being offered. But, here's the kicker in my view. If Gregg is potentially part of a future deal, you have to assume that the Cubs are now the favorites. Doubtful that Hendry makes a deal for Gregg, only to be stuck with him. Maybe Towers told Hendry that he's giving up on Atlanta and to go ahead and do what needs to be done to make the deal work.
  4. The timing of this deal tells me that something else has to be brewing. Yeah, Wood can start negotiating with other teams soon. Well, we've watched the Padres toss new names out for the Braves to include in deals. The Cubs essentially took a valuable trade chip out of the equation. Unless the Padres view Gregg as a late inning bullpen guy who is cheap enough for next year.

  6. I was just thinking this myself. Maybe the Padres didn't want Ceda back in a deal for Peavy, for whatever reason. Possibly the perception that one of the main pieces to a Peavy deal simply brought back a guy they had already had at one point? If I had to guess, this is part one of a possible 4 team trade.
  7. I just heard that same rumor and that the Padres were waiting for Peavy to agree to the trade on a sports news blip between Jim Rome hours.
  8. I was just about to say that. Piniella has always been either coy or clueless about anything that Hendry is/will be doing. His standard line is "we talked about it a while ago, I haven't heard anything since". Take little stock in anything Piniella says about anything the GM is doing. Hendry seemed pretty pissed last year when every Roberts negotiation seemed to be going straight to the media and interwebs.
  9. Players will do what's best for them regardless. He's not going to okay a trade that benefits the ownership and not himself. Players never think that way. No, but he could veto a trade that doesn't benefit him enough. We have been hearing lately that whatever team trades for Peavy may have to pick up that option year and make it guaranteed, which could then inspire those teams requesting Peavy's services to offer up less for Peavy. His contract isn't below market anymore if that final year becomes guaranteed. Will the Braves still be willing to offer up their latest package if it means they have to guarantee that final year?
  10. Isn't he also the guy who used to broadcast wrestling matches? And he broadcasts NFL games too (I think including some of the Bears' games this year). I suppose one would actually have to watch wrestling to know who announces wrestling matches.
  11. I wonder how close Peavy and Hoffman are. San Diego really screwed the pooch with Hoffman. Here is a guy who has spent most of his HOF career with the Padres. How many times has "Hell's Bells" played in the 8th and 9th innings of his long and historical career? Instead of just coming out and saying that they want to go in a different direction, or being open and honest and saying they just can't afford to give Hoffman the kind of contract he is looking for, they make a lowball offer that basically gets yanked off the table the moment Hoffman calls into question the offer. Sports talk San Diego is up in arms about the way Hoffman was treated. If Peavy is even semi-close to Hoffman, I wonder how many favors Peavy is willing to extend to the Padres front office?
  12. Whoever voted for LaRussa needs to be castrated. why? Yeah, I don't understand that either. This is a team that was running Skip Schumaker, Ryan Ludwick, Cesar Izturis, Aaron Miles, Todd Wellemeyer and Braden Looper out there on a regular basis. You can only expect so much from Pujols. All Lou had to do was get the team to show up to the park on time to win his award.
  13. Does putting crap in a ziploc baggie actually work? Yeah, it really does. I don't even want to know how you know this. Well, what the heck do you put your dogs stool samples in when you are headed to see the vet?

  15. What good are you? Haha. Not good at all. Personally, I don't want to listen to how close the Braves might be to working a deal.
  16. Nope. Yikes.
  17. that was my thought, too, especially since the wrigley renovations would seem to be far more expensive and time-consuming. Really? More expensive than dealing with permanent left field and right field bleachers, and not just one level, mind you. I doubt they'd have to do much of anything to the structure itself. right, it's not like they'd be moving fences back, needing to do something about seats. If they move fences in , say, 10-15 feet (I have no real idea), what really needs to be done other than moving the walls. If you give an MLB owner another 10-15 feet of space where you can put extra seating, they're probably going to take advantage of that. I think they would probably alter the lower bleachers so they could add a few more rows, but the extra ticket sales would probably pay for that over time. Your only going to have extra ticket sales if you are selling out games and then increase your ticket sales. I don't think they are or will be the next couple of years. Exactly. This was a 99 loss team with Peavy, Hoffman, Greene and Giles. They won't be needing extra seating in '09, that's for sure. The local San Diego sports station is talking to Dave O'Brien (Atlanta) right now, but I'm not listening to it.

  20. Does Hill have options left?
  21. From a Ken Rosenthal article earlier this month: Eventually, being the key word. Moores isn't going to pare down payroll nearly in half and then turn around and spend a significant portion of that money to bring in the fences. And when the attendance decreases to half of what it was this year, it will be hard for Moores to justify doing it the next year even if his divorce becomes final. This team is really screwed right now. The recent treatment of Trevor Hoffman isn't going to sit well, either. Granted, most Padres fans probably could care less if Hoffman ever wears a Padres uniform again. But, this is a guy whose whole HOF career was basically as a Padre, and parting on such angry terms can't be looked at as a good thing.
  22. He got the WHIP under 2.00. That's progress.
  23. I can't vouch for Williams, but Oswalt and Peavy are hunting buddies with the guy who owns KAMs. They've come by to hang out in the past after a trip. I can't confirm that Williams was the 3rd person, but I'm pretty sure that was who the 3rd guy was. Williams did pitch for both Houston and San Diego, however.
