  1. Don't get your hopes up too much. There was information he shared with mods that gave me the impression he may want to hold off on sharing that info beyond Friday. But, that's just my take. He may spill the beans tonight.
  2. Gracias! That reads much better.
  3. From all the rumors I remember, MacPhail and Hendry had a trade worked out, but Angelos wouldn't sign off on it. I don't see why you're making a big deal of this. I doubt Hendry will spend much time working with MacPhail this offseason. As far as the Peavy talks are concerned, why should Hendry walk away from a potential deal for Peavy. He's lucky enough to be one of 2 GM's who are seriously being considered to land Peavy. Meanwhile, Hendry is not sitting on his hands waiting for Towers to make a decision. The Cubs have already made a couple of trades this offseason, which is more action than many other teams have had so far.
  4. Maybe he will...remember, he posts late at night. I think I asked this awhile ago, but I don't remember getting an answer: what could he possibly be able to divulge on this certain day that he couldn't before. Obviously you can't say exactly, but can anyone give an example of how that even makes sense? From what I read, I'm guessing he won't divulge his information until after a deal is made. see, that makes a bit more sense. . . but it seems some people were expecting something Friday (I think I recall Donnie saying something about Friday, too.) I seem to recall something about Friday also, but I don't remember exactly why. It could be that Friday was the day they hoped something would be done, since that was the day teams could start talking to free agents.

  6. It's probably not that Hendry is being too cheap, but rather Towers wants a certain package from the Braves. Here is the likely reason nothing his happening. Towers wants a combination of at least 2 players from this group: Hanson, Heyward, Schafer, Escobar, Flowers, and then a 3rd prospect along the lines of Hernandez, Reyes, Morton, etc... The Cubs offer is currently better than what the Braves are offering, but Towers wants the Braves to cave, so they aren't willing to sign off yet on a deal to the Cubs since there is always the possibility that the Braves will up the offer. Honestly, if I'm Towers, the Braves prospects are who I would be targeting if I'm trading Peavy.
  7. After having read that the Marlins are looking for a big package for Hermida I've resigned myself to the fact that the Cubs are going to be unable to trade for him. It's too bad for, he perfectly fits the mold of what Lou wants next season - young, athletic and a LHB - I don't doubt he'd have a big season playing half his game in Wrigley. That leaves FA options of Bradley, Abreu and Ibanez, Bradley, I believe, is the best choice followed by Abreu and Ibanez - I hope we don't see him in RF next season, why do I keeping thinking this is who Hendry' going to ink? Also need to figure that whoever Hendry does sign should be someone that will not cost him any picks. I'd bet the Yankees would offer arbitration for Abreu. Bradley and Ibanez, probably will not be offered arby. From the Elias thread I see Ibanez is an A Type FA that's means a 1st Rd draft choice right? Bradley' a B does that involve the sandwhich picks? Oh, I didn't know Bradley was a "B". Figured he'd be an "A". I'd guess that puts Bradley in the driver's seat.

  9. Anyone know what the dimensions of the new ballpark are going to be? Gotta figure they will have a more friendly fence for RH hitters.
  10. From Cubs.com Where did you find this quote, because it's not right. Free agents can still sign with their previous team after the Thursday deadline. It's after the Thursday deadline that they lose exclusive negotiating rights. You're reading it wrong. It's saying that only the previous team can sign them before the deadline, not that the previous team can't sign them after the deadline. Really? I've read that second sentence, which appears to be cut off, several times, and it gives the appearance that the Cubs would not be able to negotiate with Dempster after Thursday. I swear I'm not hungover.

  12. This was posted on Rotoworld this morning: Odd that the Cubs top offseason need is a power lefty bat for RF, but then they trade a minor league arm for a reliever with the team who probably has the best available power lefty RF bat. Anyone think that Peavy and Hermida are either/or? It could be that some of the same guys they would need to trade to get Peavy would also be needed to trade for Hermida.
  13. Todd Walker? Michael Barrett= Kyler Burke and Geovany Soto starting everyday (ie: Rob Bowen to Oakland for Jason Kendall).
  14. I thought it was 100% certain that he wouldn't sign for less than huge dollars over a long term deal. I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but I'm guessing something like this is close to being the case, given the fact that Hendry and Wood met last night. I was being slightly sarcastic. Everyone's taking that as sacrosanct. How do we know it wasn't just Wood trying to open the negotiations? How do we know what the final number/years would have wound up as? I'm pretty sure Hendry knows this and I'm guessing Wood probably stood firm. They wouldn't just do this for no reason. People are letting their emotional attachment to Wood cloud their judgment...big money to a reliever, especially one with Wood's history, isn't a good idea. Hell, big money to a reliever is basically never a good idea.... What amazes me even more are those that are somehow attempting to justify a potential bad contract for Wood by pointing to the other bad contracts we've handed out. Yay let's keep making more mistakes because we've made others in the past and what does it matter if we make more! Yeah, it's just a mutual parting of ways. Kerry deserves to go out and get a hefty long term deal, and the Cubs should not consider giving him that hefty long term deal.
  15. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ti-morepeavy111308&prov=yhoo&type=lgns  Who needs him? We got Kevin Gregg!
  16. Gregg should be compared to Gagne, since they both wear goofy glasses.
  17. And with Kerry Wood gone now, we officially no longer have any Cub jerseys for any active Cubs. I think I'm done playing that game, even if I really, really, really want a Soto jersey more than any jersey I ever wanted.
  18. Depends on whether you believe the Cubs can outbid Boston, NYM, NYY and any other team that has some money to spend.
  19. Even if Gregg is kept he wouldn't be the closer. I see Gregg replacing Howry on the roster. I was kind of hoping they wouldn't replace Howry. I don't know if I can deal with another Howry for another season.
  20. Granted, Guzman is hard to count on due to health reasons, but I like Guzman more than I like Gregg.
  21. Is he claiming the guy in the taped footage was someone else? I hope they throw the book at him. Unfortunately, they'd probaby miss and hit an innocent bystander in the courtroom.
  22. Do we offer Howry arbitration now just to be greedy with the draft picks? Even if he accepts, what will he cost? Around $4 mill. Worth the risk of getting 2 more 1st rounders. It's too early in the afternoon to be drinking hard liquor. Put the bottle down.
  23. People really need to stop suggesting this as a possiblility. The Padres don't want a 5M mediocrity as their closer. Why not? They've been paying 8m a year for a mediocre closer for years. Because they rescinded a 4M offer to a mediocre closer this year? And that was a guy they'd have to give up 0 players for? Come on. The Padres rescinded the offer because the pitcher in question had no intention of signing for that offer, not that they weren't willing to give it to him. In the meantime, the Padres are minus a closer. And they weren't willing to go over $4M for him, so that shows you how much they want a mediocre releiver. I know I don't need to introduce you to this guy, but you are acting like I do. Heath Bell can't pitch the 8th and 9th innings everyday. And maybe Gregg could be headed somewhere else to close, with a younger, cheaper reliever being sent to San Diego. I see zero need for the Cubs to have traded for Gregg, with or without Wood resigning.
