  1. Wait, there are trophies to be won? If I would have known that, I would have tried harder.
  2. Think Andy Sisco.
  3. It's the Bears. Only a fool would give away tickets that a lot of people would be willing to pay for.
  4. No. Teahen can actually play outfield as well as others positions Hoffpauir can't. I don't want him though, unless it's for scraps and he's used as a bench player And the other positions that Teahen plays are positions he won't be playing for the Cubs, thus he really has no more value than a guy we already have that can only play corner outfield positions.
  5. Don't we already sort of have a Teahen in Hoffpauir?
  6. I don't think it's in his contract. It has been presented that he listed those 5 cities as places he would like to go at the beginning of this offseason. Yeah, I don't think it's in his contract. I think he got full NTC protection. However, that the Padres need to trade him, and that the Padres have gone from a pennant chasing team to a bottom feeder, Peavy was willing to list a few teams he might be willing to waive his NTC to be traded to.
  7. I heard that the Dempster signing doesn't necessarily mean we will quit pursuing Peavy. Peavy-Zambrano-Harden-Dempster-Lilly...*drool* Yeah Hendry isn't the type of GM to close the door on a pitcher like Peavy. Hendry doesn't control payroll. He has a certain amount of money to work with. If he spends like 10 mil on a RF I don't see how he can afford Peavy too Marquis money in '09= Peavy money in '09 Next.
  8. I would think Bradley would take less to stay in the states and play for a winner.
  9. I'm disappointed that Rockzilla is no longer offered at Red Lobster.
  10. I'd prefer it if he didn't turn out to be the next Chris Carpenter.
  11. Anyone have thoughts on why Towers is talking so publicly about this? Seems there is no good reason to rule out teams in the mix to drive up the price tag. Is this to appease SD fans on Peavy's pressure for a bad return on the trade? I realize that the GM's certainly have an inside relationship that is only selectively revealed to the public, but this one seems a bit off. Perhaps because it was so obvious to everybody involved that there was no need to invent fake competition for the bidding. Hendry certainly has a reputation for making fair deals, he doesn't look to screw teams over. So, maybe he's putting the ball in Hendry's court to come up with a reasonable offer for Peavy. Or he's making it difficult for Chicago to make that offer any higher, and he's just trying to get Peavy to agree to go somewhere else. It's probably to put pressure on Atlanta to up their offer. The scary part of these Dempster rumors is that Atlanta had Dempster on their radar. If the Cubs sign Dempster, Atlanta could up their offer, especially considering some of the other FA pitchers Atlanta is looking at are likely to sign elsewhere. If I'm Towers, I prefer the packages Atlanta can put together over just about anything the Cubs would reasonably offer.
  12. I wouldn't mind that, actually. Similar contracts, and both in their final years, IIRC. He has decent enough splits against RHP, good speed and a pretty respectable OBP.
  13. I could see Toronto making a play for Marquis. This will lose AJ Burnett, they'll likely to miss out on Dempster, and the other major free agents have no intentions of going to Toronto. So I could see Toronto be interested in Jason Marquis (even tho I think Brad Penn would be a decent buy low possibility). The Mets could be another team interested in Marquis especially if they don't bring back Pedro or Perez and strike out on the free agency market I could see Cleveland being interested if they don't like how their pitchers behind Lee and Carmona are developing. There not a contender, but I could see Baltimore (and no this would be separate from the O's player we would like) being interested in Marquis to fill out their rotation. So depending on how the FA market shapes out, there could be some decent options for Marquis. Okay, you talked me into it. Marquis and cash to Toronto for some dude named Travis Snider.
  14. It might not take Peavy and Johnson out of future talks, but you'd have to imagine that Hendry would want to move Marquis first before landing another pitcher and being stuck with Marquis. I'd be fine with Dempster coming back. And I'd be thrilled if they still landed Peavy. Bring back Edmonds on the cheap and let Johnson/Edmonds patrol CF, Fukudome/DeRosa patrol RF and Fontenot/Cedeno/DeRosa play 2b. Give Hoffpauir the 5th outfield job and call it an offseason. The offense isn't any different than last year, but the pitching is certainly better. ETA: Oh wait. Theriot or Fontenot will likely be involved in a deal for Peavy, so I guess we'd still need to shop for a middle infielder.
  15. I thought about the Twins as a potential 3rd team because of the rumors about Delmon Young. Unfortunately, the Padres would be a better trade candidate with the Twins than we would be. Kevin Kouzmanoff to Minnesota Delmon Young to San Diego Here's a straight up deal that gives Minny the 3b they've been looking for. It also allows the Padres to move Headley to his natural position. Tampa would be a great 3rd team to trade with, but I'm clueless as to what we could offer Tampa that would make them want to give up Jackson or Sonnanstine, let alone both. Towers wants young, cheap, talented pitching, and there aren't many teams shopping their young, cheap, talented pitching. Realistically, we aren't going to get a 3rd team involved if it means moving young, cheap, talented pitching.
  16. I've heard a lot of adjectives used to describe Al Davis over the years, but respected and admired are not two of them.
  17. Bobby Wade was an okay possession receiver who got cut because he dropped too many punts. He's hardly thrived away from Chicago though. As for your point on Vasher, it's not like the Bears are getting beat by QBs standing in the pocket for 6-7 seconds. They aren't pressuring the QB, but Vasher isn't covering guys either. They are getting beat on quick pass plays for the most part, which is very much a secondary problem. To be fair, I said he was neither a great DB or a bad DB. I still think the biggest problem with the current DB's is the pass rush. Since there isn't a pass rush of any significance, the QB's confidence level is through the roof and he feels like he can accomplish anything in the pocket. Only the receiver knows where he is going. The DB has to guess where the receiver is going. This gives the receiver a significant advantage on pass routes. What gives the DB a fighting chance against the receiver is pass pressure. If you can't flush the QB out of the pocket, hurry his pass, knock him on his butt, etc.... the success rate of pass plays will be much higher for the offense. If there is no disruption of a passing play, the play will likely be completed, which is exactly what we are seeing.
  18. and they take it off the board so we got a 13-13 tie and the first 11-10 game in nfl history, hell of a week Why did that touchdown get taken off the board? Was it determined that there was a forward lateral somewhere? Because I didn't see one.
  19. Are we honestly talking about Bobby Wade? My, how quickly we forget just how bad he was in a Bears uniform. They didn't get rid of him quickly enough, IMO. Changing the discussion back to the defense, I'd like to say that Vasher isn't really any different than he has ever been. He's not a great DB, but he's not horrible, either. A defensive back can only be as good as the defensive line and their pass rush. Let's take a look at Quentin Jammer and Antonio Cromartie. The Chargers pass rush this year is nothing like the pass rush they have had the past few years. Cromartie had 10 interceptions in 10 games last year. He has zero this year. If you can't hurry the QB, and get him to throw off his back foot, professional QB's can pinpoint their passes and the best DB's in the world will look like burnt toast more often than they will look like all stars. Without a pass rush of any significance, the rest of the defense will be exposed.
  20. Well, it doesn't bode well for our farm system if they are willing to give it up for Peavy, and they'd still prefer a deal for just a couple of Atlanta's boys.
  21. Maybe the Cubs can get RJ to play for free. Afterall, if we are giving him a salary, he'll have to give up collecting social security.
  22. We mustn't interfere with the love affair that is Peter Angelos and Brian Roberts.
  23. I was actually glad FOX took that game off my tv. I had seen enough. A person shouldn't have to get that worked up over a stupid game. I don't even care if they make the playoffs at this point. They proved today that they really aren't a very good football team.
  24. Well they didn't lose. So what happens to those that picked the Eagles? All of the suicide pools I've been in had ties going down as a loss. But, it's up to each organizer to decide those rules before they collect people's money.
  25. Yeah, most free agents won't be signed until after the deadline to offer arbitration. Although many guys will be offered arbitration by their previous clubs, knowing that someone will give them a long term deal (ie: Sabathia, Teixiera)
