  1. oh yeah they did I wasn't here, but that's just so hard to believe. Really? I don't think it's that black and white. I was very hopeful that Bobby Hill was going to be the answer at 2b. You have to remember that the Cubs were running a whole host of crappy 2b's out there on a regular basis. I didn't want Bobby Hill included in the trade. But, it was more to the fact that the Cubs gave the Pirates 3 guys to pick from as the PTBNL, and Hill was just one of the rumored 3 choices. I want to say that the other two were Steve Smyth and the third was Francis Beltran. Brownie points for me for remembering if those were the actual 3. I also want to say that the Pirates already had Freddie Sanchez (and another 2b prospect that was considered a top prospect at the time) and their pitching was a disaster, so the hope was that Steve Smyth would be the PTBNL. I was enamored with Aramis in Pittsburgh, and was thrilled we got him so cheap. It sucked that it costed Bobby Hill, but Aramis>>>>>>>>Bobby Hill then, and Aramis>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bobby Hill now. ETA: Sanchez was traded to the Pirates on July 31, '03. The Aramis trade was made a week before that. However, the PTBNL (Hill) didn't go to Pittsburgh until August 15th. Looks like Jose Castillo was the prospect at the time.
  2. a lot of people, myself included, said that last offseason and if we had actually swapped the two, the anger around here throughout the season would have been incredible This is true. The scary thing to me is that I honestly don't think Theriot can maintain anything close to the AVG he put up in '08, and when you couple that in with the extremely low number of XBH's and his poor range defensively, you end up with one of the worst SS's in MLB. I watched a lot of games. It seems like most of Theriot's hits are seeing eye single's that were just out of the reach of an infielder and usually the 2b. I guess if the only way to get Peavy were to also take Greene, I'd make that deal. Otherwise, I doubt Hendry really has much interest in Greene considering he's not a lefty outfielder.
  3. I'm not really sure what happened to Greene in 2008, but Greene had more HR's in 2007 than Theriot had XBH's in 2008. Defensively, there isn't anyone I'd rather have at SS in the major leagues than Khalil Greene. I'm not really sure how to feel about him after his disastrous '07 campaign. But, I'd rather have Greene than Theriot.
  4. Welcome to the forum. I'm hoping for a little more from Dempster than Esteban Loiaza, but I understand the skepticism. I'll also be upset if they don't get Peavy. I'm also confused as to why they made a trade with the Marlins when the clear favorite trade chip the Marlins had was Hermida.
  5. I like RJ better. But, that's factoring in that their one year deal would be within a couple million of each other.
  6. The Philles plan as of now is to move there Top prospect over to Second this spring for a tryout , he has been playing 2b and ss in the AFL. They have had talks about bringing back So Taughci to handle 2B like he did during other Utley injury spells. You probably meant Tadahito Iguchi. Kendrick might be a half way decent combo with Marshall for San Diego's rotation. I would imagine that the Phillies are probably ready to give Carlos Carrasco a chance at the big league level at this point, making Kendrick expendable. Realistically, very few teams are willing to trade their "Tommy Hanson's" to other teams for expensive alternatives, so if Towers was expecting a "Tommy Hanson type prospect in return, it's probably shooting a bit too high. I'm sure the reason the Yankees were a team Towers has interest was due to Phil Hughes. Not gonna happen, once again. Ian Kennedy, sure. Kei Igawa. Most likely. Joba Chamberlain? Not a chance.
  7. If anyone has interest in any of these players, feel free to PM me to discuss trades. I have several players that I would love to keep, but just don't have room due to the 10 player limit. Several have exemptions remaining. Things could change before February 14th, but my current keeper list going into 2009 is: Matt Holliday, Brandon Webb, Roy Oswalt, James Shields, Geovany Soto, Stephen Drew, Jacoby Ellsbury, Ian Stewart, Alexei Ramirez and Alex Gordon. That leaves these exempt pitchers available for trade: Ubaldo Jimenez Johnny Cueto Carlos Marmol And my list of players who don't fit within the cap: Milton Bradley Carlos Pena BJ Upton Javier Vasquez Vernon Wells Randy Johnson Since I really can't keep any of these guys, I'd let them go on the cheap. I'm also open to trade discussions for any of my keepers. I also have about 300 points of cap space.
  8. I'm not giving up, and I would hope Hendry wouldn't, either. I can appreciate a comment like "we can't afford Milton Bradley, or Bobby Abreu". But when a guy like Peavy is available, you make room in your budget, even if it means someone has to go. The rumors that have floated around was that the Cubs could get Dempster AND Peavy, and another one was the Cubs could get Dempster and Randy Johnson. Hendry was quoted directly as still having interest in Peavy, so I'm not going to take much stock in anything Muskat writes on the subject.
  9. Yes. Damn those Cubs and their rotten fans for winning the World Series every year. If a trade makes a team better, they shouldn't let the division or league they play in get in the way of making that trade.
  10. I don't see how he would clear waivers. Too many teams need pitching, and Hill is the kind of guy people would gamble on. That he throws with his left hand just makes him that much more appealing.
  11. I'd rule out Abreu at this point. The Yankees are offering him arbitration, thus making Abreu much less valuable.
  12. Payroll relief. Ellsbury is probably ready to play CF everyday with this move, and it frees up money to outbid the Yankees for a SP. But that's why they got rid of Crisp, which I understand. But why Ramirez in return? Cheap bullpen help is always a good thing. They weren't going to get much for Crisp.

  14. Forget it. There is obviously no reasoning with you.
  15. How can he screw up something that was never clsoe to happening? Peavy to the Cubs has always been a long shot. You're acting like he could have him right now if he wanted, which is not true. Something that was not close to happening? Let me see..... The Cubs were one of 5 teams that had a chance at Peavy. Then they were one of 4 teams. Then they were one of 3 teams. Then they were one of 2 teams. Then they were one of 1 teams. But, yeah, you're right. It was never close to happening. Umm, wasn't "not close to happening" an exact quote from Towers multiple times? He just said in that radio interview a couple days ago that the Cubs don't have the pieces and that it would take a 3rd or 4th team, and that it would be very complicated and would take a while. So that is close? Riigghhhhhhhtttt. The fact that the Cubs were one of the few teams talking with Towers about Peavy does in no way mean something was close. Come on. Excuse me. But let's not change your exact quote of "never close to happening" to "not close to happening". When you were the only team bargaining with the Padres, you cannot toss around the term "never close to happening".

  17. What is this? The 2007 offseason? Did I step into a time machine? Where am I? What the heck is going on here? Who are you? What did you do with my bologne sammich?
  18. If Hendry somehow screws up this Peavy deal, he will officially be dead to me.
  19. Wait, there are trophies to be won? If I would have known that, I would have tried harder.
  20. Think Andy Sisco.
  21. It's the Bears. Only a fool would give away tickets that a lot of people would be willing to pay for.
  22. No. Teahen can actually play outfield as well as others positions Hoffpauir can't. I don't want him though, unless it's for scraps and he's used as a bench player And the other positions that Teahen plays are positions he won't be playing for the Cubs, thus he really has no more value than a guy we already have that can only play corner outfield positions.
