  1. From Cubs.com Where did you find this quote, because it's not right. Free agents can still sign with their previous team after the Thursday deadline. It's after the Thursday deadline that they lose exclusive negotiating rights.
  2. This was posted on Rotoworld this morning: Odd that the Cubs top offseason need is a power lefty bat for RF, but then they trade a minor league arm for a reliever with the team who probably has the best available power lefty RF bat. Anyone think that Peavy and Hermida are either/or? It could be that some of the same guys they would need to trade to get Peavy would also be needed to trade for Hermida.
  3. Todd Walker? Michael Barrett= Kyler Burke and Geovany Soto starting everyday (ie: Rob Bowen to Oakland for Jason Kendall).
  4. I thought it was 100% certain that he wouldn't sign for less than huge dollars over a long term deal. I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but I'm guessing something like this is close to being the case, given the fact that Hendry and Wood met last night. I was being slightly sarcastic. Everyone's taking that as sacrosanct. How do we know it wasn't just Wood trying to open the negotiations? How do we know what the final number/years would have wound up as? I'm pretty sure Hendry knows this and I'm guessing Wood probably stood firm. They wouldn't just do this for no reason. People are letting their emotional attachment to Wood cloud their judgment...big money to a reliever, especially one with Wood's history, isn't a good idea. Hell, big money to a reliever is basically never a good idea.... What amazes me even more are those that are somehow attempting to justify a potential bad contract for Wood by pointing to the other bad contracts we've handed out. Yay let's keep making more mistakes because we've made others in the past and what does it matter if we make more! Yeah, it's just a mutual parting of ways. Kerry deserves to go out and get a hefty long term deal, and the Cubs should not consider giving him that hefty long term deal.
  5. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ti-morepeavy111308&prov=yhoo&type=lgns  Who needs him? We got Kevin Gregg!
  6. Gregg should be compared to Gagne, since they both wear goofy glasses.
  7. And with Kerry Wood gone now, we officially no longer have any Cub jerseys for any active Cubs. I think I'm done playing that game, even if I really, really, really want a Soto jersey more than any jersey I ever wanted.
  8. Depends on whether you believe the Cubs can outbid Boston, NYM, NYY and any other team that has some money to spend.
  9. Even if Gregg is kept he wouldn't be the closer. I see Gregg replacing Howry on the roster. I was kind of hoping they wouldn't replace Howry. I don't know if I can deal with another Howry for another season.
  10. Granted, Guzman is hard to count on due to health reasons, but I like Guzman more than I like Gregg.
  11. Is he claiming the guy in the taped footage was someone else? I hope they throw the book at him. Unfortunately, they'd probaby miss and hit an innocent bystander in the courtroom.
  12. Do we offer Howry arbitration now just to be greedy with the draft picks? Even if he accepts, what will he cost? Around $4 mill. Worth the risk of getting 2 more 1st rounders. It's too early in the afternoon to be drinking hard liquor. Put the bottle down.
  13. People really need to stop suggesting this as a possiblility. The Padres don't want a 5M mediocrity as their closer. Why not? They've been paying 8m a year for a mediocre closer for years. Because they rescinded a 4M offer to a mediocre closer this year? And that was a guy they'd have to give up 0 players for? Come on. The Padres rescinded the offer because the pitcher in question had no intention of signing for that offer, not that they weren't willing to give it to him. In the meantime, the Padres are minus a closer. And they weren't willing to go over $4M for him, so that shows you how much they want a mediocre releiver. I know I don't need to introduce you to this guy, but you are acting like I do. Heath Bell can't pitch the 8th and 9th innings everyday. And maybe Gregg could be headed somewhere else to close, with a younger, cheaper reliever being sent to San Diego. I see zero need for the Cubs to have traded for Gregg, with or without Wood resigning.

  16. At the same time, why trade for Gregg now with Wood still potentially in the fold? Could have traded for him after it was determined Wood would not be back. Why not package Ceda and other prospects for Hermida instead? Something doesn't make sense about this unless it's leading to another trade. And nobody likes making 3 and 4 team trades more than Hendry.
  17. I think you are overthinking things. Hendry wanted a closer for insurance in case Kerry leaves and made a stupid move. I probably am, but don't kill my optimism. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I have to believe something is up. Although, I'm a bit scared that the person who just mentioned Marmol possibly being in the deal could be right.
  18. I think he made 2.5m this past year, and is arby eligible this year. The Padres were offering Hoffman 4m, so maybe the Padres could avoid arby with Gregg and get him for somewhere in the neighborhood of what Hoffman was being offered. But, here's the kicker in my view. If Gregg is potentially part of a future deal, you have to assume that the Cubs are now the favorites. Doubtful that Hendry makes a deal for Gregg, only to be stuck with him. Maybe Towers told Hendry that he's giving up on Atlanta and to go ahead and do what needs to be done to make the deal work.
  19. The timing of this deal tells me that something else has to be brewing. Yeah, Wood can start negotiating with other teams soon. Well, we've watched the Padres toss new names out for the Braves to include in deals. The Cubs essentially took a valuable trade chip out of the equation. Unless the Padres view Gregg as a late inning bullpen guy who is cheap enough for next year.
  20. The timing of this deal tells me that something else has to be brewing.
  21. I was just thinking this myself. Maybe the Padres didn't want Ceda back in a deal for Peavy, for whatever reason. Possibly the perception that one of the main pieces to a Peavy deal simply brought back a guy they had already had at one point? If I had to guess, this is part one of a possible 4 team trade.
  22. I just heard that same rumor and that the Padres were waiting for Peavy to agree to the trade on a sports news blip between Jim Rome hours.
  23. I was just about to say that. Piniella has always been either coy or clueless about anything that Hendry is/will be doing. His standard line is "we talked about it a while ago, I haven't heard anything since". Take little stock in anything Piniella says about anything the GM is doing. Hendry seemed pretty pissed last year when every Roberts negotiation seemed to be going straight to the media and interwebs.
