  1. Neifi, though, wasn't an NRI to ST. He was released by the Giants on August 17, 2004 and signed by the Cubs 2 days later on a minor league deal with a guaranteed call-up once rosters expanded. They signed him for some needed infield depth, as by then it was apparent that Nomar still wasn't 100% and wouldn't be able to play every single day, leaving good old Ramon Martinez as the only other shortstop on the roster. And to be fair to Neifi, by some divine miracle, he somehow managed to hit .371/.400/.548 (BA/OBP/SLG) in his 62 Cub at-bats that season. In retrospect, this was probably the worst thing he did that year, because it endeared him to the management and guaranteed his roster spot in '05 and '06.
  2. Eveland went to Arizona in the Johnny Estrada/Doug Davis trade.
  3. This thread makes me need to kauff, man.
  4. This is one of the best mental images of baseball I've had all offseason. Wrigley during this would rival Dodger Stadium in Gagné's heyday. No Metallica/AC-DC theme song needed, just the place going nuts.
  5. Reports are that they aren't shifting Patterson from 2B, just "having him work out in the outfield a little bit." Take it as you will, of course. Conventional wisdom would say they're trying to increase EPatt's trade value, or use him as a backup plan for center field if Pie leaves in a trade.
  6. why does he have to? I seriously don't get it. If you're going to hate a player for taking an available number (which happens to be the number they have always worn) then you are being petty Didn't Marquis wear a different # with the Braves? He wore Nos. 38 and 51 with Atlanta.
  7. The Cubs don't appear to have made the signing official yet. Once they do, even, unless Marquis gets an introductory press conference, it could be some time until Marquis gets a number, as the Cubs.com roster is updated sporadically during the offseason.
  8. According to Minor League Baseball's site, he wore No. 20 at Iowa and is currently wearing No. 58 for the Tigres del Licey (Licey Tigers) of the Dominican Wnter League.
  9. Jae Kuk Ryu is still listed as wearing No. 20. Subject to change at any time, certainly, but No. 20 Ryu and No. 17 Pie is what the roster says at present.
  10. Elsewhere on the subject of new jersey numbers: 2 - Ryan Theriot (his 4th number as a Cub; 55, 3, 7 and 2) 7 - Mark DeRosa 17 - Felix Pie (likely the number he'll wear if he makes his debut this season) 27 - Buck Coats 30 - Ted Lilly 32 - Daryle Ward 48 - Neal Cotts 57 - Rocky Cherry 55 - Clay Rapada
  11. Yankees did it for Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey (No. 8), although I guess "the Yankees did it" isn't much of an argument against being ridiculous. I'm not against it, though. Fergie's credentials as a Cub aren't in question, and while I don't disagree that Maddux's career Cub numbers aren't jersey-retirement worthy, he won his 300th game and registered his 3,000th strikeout as a Cub, and I think that retiring his number at Wrigley would be a gesture of respect toward the overall career of one of baseball's all-time greats on the part of the Cubs organization.
  12. Here's hoping for a double-player jersey retirement ceremony for Maddux and Jenkins.
  13. Non-Tender Free Agents - MLB - Yahoo! Sports Adam Harben non-tendered too, apparently.
  14. Marquis wore Nos. 38 and 51 in Atlanta before he took No. 21 in St. Louis. I don't see anything short of a no-limits cage match between Zambrano and Marquis (Zambrano wins by default when Marquis forfeits) over number 38, and I would hope they keep Sammy's 21 unofficially retired for now, so if Marquis wants one of his old numbers, he can take 51 from Mateo.
  15. That's not bad at all for Oakland. They get a guy who can clearly still hit, and backup Kendall at catcher for the 3-4 innings of the season he doesn't catch.
  16. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060901&content_id=1640058&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc Seemed like he enjoyed his time here and wouldn't mind returning for the right price.
  17. It's official as per MLB - Boston Red Sox win the rights to negotiate with Daisuke Matsuzaka, financial terms of the bid undisclosed at this time.
  18. 2 - Authentic custom alternate, and replica SOSA 21 home.
  19. http://www.chicagosport.com/csport/dept.asp?s%5Fid=0&dept%5Fid=3015&mscssid=FRDCC7KHNWMT9LE3PBB6K7E068UJ9DC7 That's about $25 cheaper than the official MLB Shop, and you can also get a home jersey with Ramirez's name on the back to match the names returning to the home jerseys in 2007 (the MLB Shop only sells nameless home jerseys at the moment). I ordered my custom jersey from them at about $50 less than the same jersey would have cost me from the MLB Shop, and I can testify they're very reliable when it comes to getting your order out to you.
  20. Kelly Johnson's an outfielder rather than a second baseman, and Arizona intends to go with a 2007 outfield of Byrnes/Young/Quentin and Conor Jackson at first base, so I doubt any of the 3 rookies will be available.
  21. John Kruk predicting that the 2007 World Series champion will be whatever team Dusty Baker manages, for the "wisdom and experience he'll impart to his next players." No, seriously. The Kool-Aid on the SportsCenter set at New Busch must be particularly tasty tonight.
  22. We're only short a hitting coach now. Cubs add three to coaching staff Mike Quade, third base (already known) Matt Sinatro, first base Lester Strode, bullpen No Ryno at first base, apparently.
  23. Congrats Detroit. An Oakland/Detroit ALCS is going to be a genuinely enjoyable bout of October baseball. Hey, this postseason thing isn't half bad when that team from the other side of town isn't raining on it for me...
  24. http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/Y_2004.htm D-Rays finished in 4th and Jays in last in 2004.
