  1. Unless I'm reading this wrong, while the switch described in the original post, i.e. putting a pitcher at a position for only one batter and then switching him back in the same inning, can't be done, but as long as it's done only once per inning, the switch of a pitcher to a field position is legal as long as he isn't switched back into the pitcher spot until the next inning/
  2. Trivia: According to Phil Garner, this is sort of what they would have done with Clemens in Game 4 of last year's NLDS: Move Clemens either to the outfield or first base, and bring in Jason Lane to pitch in relief. Now that would have been something to see.
  3. The Red Sox intend to platoon Youkilis at 1st Base with Snow, in addition to spelling Lowell on certain days.
  4. The Padres have Klesko slotted at 1B for 2006, with Adrian Gonzalez backing him up/platooning with him. Dave Roberts shifts over to LF with Mike Cameron manning CF now. Piazza in the outfield at this point would be a bad idea. Nothing would be caught.
  5. The clips are all in Real Media format. I recommend Media Player Classic with Real Alternative. It'll play the clips fine for you.
  6. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/ps/y2003/home.jsp?view=fla_chc I didn't realize that both the audio and the video from the 2003 postseason were still available for free at MLB.com. Even if it is hard to watch knowing the final outcome, I can't resist watching Sammy homer to tie Game 1 in the 9th, or listening to Pat's call of said home run. The NLDS media from that year is presumably accessible by following the appropriate link at the top of the page. Going into the 2006 season, I like to think of this as a reminder that no matter the disagreements that go on here, and throughout Cub fandom, we all want the same thing when it comes down to it: To see our Cubs there again, and go beyond this time. Enjoy. :D
  7. The same connection Mike Piazza has to Italy and Nomar has to Mexico. I believe his grandparents were born in the Netherlands. Nice with the South Holland bit, though.
  8. WMVP is ESPN 1000 AM, the Chicago affiliate for ESPN Radio.
  9. ESPN/ESPN2 will carry at least some of the matches. I haven't heard whether Fox will carry any games or not.
  10. Found this on the WGN website. http://www.wgnradio.com/sports/patroncd.htm I know where my next $10 is going. Good thing Ronnie didn't retire in No. 30 or something, otherwise it would cost more.
  11. Go crazy? (Shame on all of you for making him wait so long )
  12. I agree, but if you look at that positional talent, there's reason to worry in the future. In the half-season he played in 2005, Weeks showed he's already a very solid defender and a hitter with very strong potential. We didn't see a ton of Fielder in the majors, but his minor league numbers show he's got power, and anyone this side of Jason Giambi is capable of playing a decent first base. As far Hardy, you're right, he hasn't shown much at the major league level, but if he falters, they have Bill Hall to take the job. As for the lineup, I see their 1-6 spots going something like: CF Clark 2B Weeks RF Jenkins LF Lee 3B Koskie 1B Fielder which may not necessarily be a murderer's row, but it's solid. Thus I honestly think that if the young positional talents play to their respective potentials and the team adds a good arm or two to the rotation, the Brewers could at the very least make some serious noise in the division sooner rather than later.
  13. I would go as far as to say that this gives Milwaukee the legitimate power-hitting third baseman they coveted. A little bit of pitching, and look out, NL Central...
  14. He also wore No. 11 in his first Spring Training with the Cubs, but switched to No. 21 in time for the regular season. Humberto Cota currently has claim to No. 11 for Pittsburgh, and I believe No. 17's been vacant since Bobby Hill's demotion(s). Certainly Humberto Cota would vacate the number if Sammy asked nicely and/or peeled a few $100 bills off the old Sosa billfold?
  15. Just curious, did Miguel Cabrera come up as a shortstop and was then moved to 3B/OF at the major league level? Because I don't think he's ever actually played SS in a major league uniform aside from 3 innings at the position during the 2003 NLCS.
  16. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5192008 In exchange for 2B Orlando Hudson and RHP Miguel Batista. I honestly did not see this coming.
  17. Somehow, though, he managed to not miss any subsequent starts.
  18. Let's not make this the mane acquisition of the offseason. Thank you, thank you. I'm here all week. Try the veal!
  19. Word is that if they got Glaus, they'd stick him at 1B and hope he could handle it better than Millar.
  20. He can't hit lefties. At all. Period. I think if you were to properly platoon Nixon, and say, Kevin Mench, who mashes lefties but doesn't handle righties nearly as well, it might produce a capable RF tandem. However, that would require: A. Our GM to make the trade deals for both Nixon and Mench. B. Our manager to properly platoon the two.
  21. As long as we're talking to Arizona about outfielders, why not see what it would take to get Shawn Green? Lefty batter, easily gives us .280, 20 HRs, 80 RBIs, .350 OBP, .800 OPS. He plays a very solid RF, and he can spell someone in CF or at 1B every so often. He's no worse than anyone else mentioned for RF (Mench, Nixon, Jones) save for Abreu, and his cost in trade would almost certainly be less than what we'd have to surrender for Abreu. He also has Chicago ties, being born in Des Plaines, and would open up an outfield spot in Arizona for Quentin or Jackson.
  22. Pish tosh. We all know that Rachel Nichols is ESPN's most attractive female talent. http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=nichols/050930
  23. I would think Bill Hall and J.J. Hardy will compete for the starting SS job in Spring Training. If Hardy wins, Hall probably gets the utility infielder job.
  24. Is that meant to be LF, or did Ron Dibble actually suggest Corey be moved to an infield position?
  25. Damon Buford? No no no. If anything, the number should be retired in honor of Scott McClain. That said, the number should be open for Pierre once he gets around to picking his Cubs uniform number.
