  1. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=insidedishburnettssinkin&prov=tsn&type=lgns I'm not quite sure what to make of this. :-k
  2. WGN 720 reporting that Scott Eyre was placed on the 15-day DL with the hamstring injury he suffered last night in order to make room for O'Malley.
  3. Clearly he was being blackmailed by someone on the Cubs. Maybe Neifi found out his real age?
  4. I saw this guy pitch against KU's baseball team (I'm a photographer for the university newspaper and I shoot primarily baseball, so they send me with the team on the road occasionally). He pitched righty against the first two KU hitters in the inning, and then when our switch-hitting catcher came up, he switched hands. I did a complete double-take. And the thing is, he's good from both sides. If he does get drafted, it'll be interesting to see whether he makes it to the bigs or not. Definite potential, though.
  5. I don't know. The half shirt thing just strikes me as odd, is all. As does him insulting the fan who asked the question.
  6. Courtesy of Uni Watch. Tim Laciny reports major tongue-wagging in St. Louis over Jim Edmonds' cropped undershirt (sometimes referred to as a "halfshirt"), which many Cards fans consider to be a bit on the metrosexual side. Someone even asked Edmonds about it when he recently did a Web chat session. Edmonds' reply: "Half of our team wears a halfshirt under their jersey, including #5, #27, and #26. You should try it someday and wear it under your McDonald's uniform." Not the nicest thing to say to a fan, but you've gotta like a guy who refers to his teammates by uni number. http://static.flickr.com/54/131431948_89f177188c.jpg?v=0 http://static.flickr.com/49/131431949_b43a47953e.jpg?v=0 :? 7. So you're advocating the acquisition of a better defensive first baseman, yet at the same time you vote to keep Walker at first? I don't get it. And what impact does Hairston have on this?
  8. When Sidney Ponson hangs around the stadium, he hangs around the stadium. I'm here all week, folks.
  9. The fact that he can't hit poses a few problems too. D'oh.
  10. He's retired and working for ESPN now.
  11. Barrett was drafted as a shortstop, came up through the Expos' system primarily as a third baseman, was converted to catcher late, split his rookie year between third base and catcher, and became a full-time catcher in 2001. As for first base, he's made 6 career appearances there, 2 of them starts, for a total of 21 and two-thirds innings at the position, all of which were in 2002. He hasn't appeared at a position other than catcher since then.
  12. I got bored recently and decided to see if I could sew together a passable radio pregame opener out of various Cubs soundbites and music. All clips came from Jon M. Davis' Cubs Sound Page and they were put together in Audacity. They're a little rough in some places, and I'm sure you experienced audio people out there could edit rings around me, but for the result of too much time on my hands, I don't think they're too bad. I made two versions, one using Ramirez's grand slam against the White Sox, June 25, 2005: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ag3fpi And one using Barrett's grand slam against the Cards on April 9: http://www.sendspace.com/file/dazo9a Enjoy/comment/criticize/whatever.
  13. Why? Does Damon want to play LF? Hunter's much better defensively in CF than Damon. damon said he'd move to rf if they got hunter. Johnny Damon doesn't seem to have received the memo that he has the arm of a 65-year-old. Put him in right field and baserunners would take extra bases on him ad nauseum. Put Damon in left, Hunter in center, Matsui in right, and Sheffield to DH, though, and you might have something there. The only question that raises is what they would do with Giambi when he needs days off from the field.
  14. Retrosheet lists no matchups between Maddux and Lofton up to 2004, and for 2005, Maddux made no starts in Philly, and when the Phillies were in Chicago, Lofton was on the DL.
  15. This worries me. Not only because we're going to be short on outfield depth now, but I fear that Aardsma's gonna get the "12th man" treatment, i.e. sit in the bullpen without work, and then every 2 weeks when Dusty gives him an inning, he's going to struggle.
  16. Restovich isn't on the 40-man, neither is Sing. They'd have to clear a 40-man space in order to bring one of them up.
  17. Seems like every day we see or hear about Murt doing something to make himself a better ballplayer. I'm thinking we're real lucky to have him in left field for us.
  18. - M. Ojeda singled to left center, M. Holliday scored, J. Smith out at third The left fielder was Shane Victorino, so it was a guy who appears to have somewhat decent speed, to the left fielder with a decent arm. Could have gone either way.
  19. Carl Everett has never played first base in his career. Maybe he doesn't believe in the position?
  20. The Giants also have Armando Benitez due back from the DL as soon as he's eligible, so I'd imagine they'd wait to begin evaluating their pen until after he's back and throwing in the 9th. The Braves have no such closer waiting in the wings, except for Devine, as you said, but with the way he's pitched so far in the bigs, both in his time last year, and this year, I'd worry about him as a closer.
  21. Apparently it's a dyed goatee. :-s
  22. I agree that the Dodgers are, for the moment at least, set with Baez to take over the closer role. He may not be top-tier, but 41 saves is 41 saves, so it's certainly not as if he can't close out games. To be honest, I think that the Braves will be more in the market for an experienced late-inning reliever such as Williamson, if he shows he's all the way back in the next month or two. With an extra $5 million to spend during the season this year, I predict that closer to the deadline, the Braves will try to deal for a closer if Chris Reitsma continues to struggle, much as they did with the Farns last year.
