Neifi, though, wasn't an NRI to ST. He was released by the Giants on August 17, 2004 and signed by the Cubs 2 days later on a minor league deal with a guaranteed call-up once rosters expanded. They signed him for some needed infield depth, as by then it was apparent that Nomar still wasn't 100% and wouldn't be able to play every single day, leaving good old Ramon Martinez as the only other shortstop on the roster. And to be fair to Neifi, by some divine miracle, he somehow managed to hit .371/.400/.548 (BA/OBP/SLG) in his 62 Cub at-bats that season. In retrospect, this was probably the worst thing he did that year, because it endeared him to the management and guaranteed his roster spot in '05 and '06.
