  1. Not yet. I'll find out by 5:30 when we meet with Jim. I've put in calls about the White Sox on this matter, too. The Tigers gave them a little ouchie yesterday. Speaking of your 5:30 meeting with Jim, isn't it about time for the obligatory yearly announcement that Hendry has postponed his scheduled meeting with the media, leading to rampant speculation? That's always one of my favorite December traditions.
  2. The Cubs have Josh Donaldson by virtue of that trade as well.
  3. Teahen would make a lot of sense for the Cubs. They wanted Matsui (ugh!) so they could make DeRosa a supersub. Teahen could kind of serve as that supersub. He could play 3B when Aramis isn't available. He could play LF in place of Soriano. He'd be a terrific bat off the bench, paired with Ward. Teahen could play RF if they fail to sign Kosuke. Even if they do sign Kosuke, Teahen could be a fallback RF if none of the internal CF candidates work out and they have to move Kosuke to CF. I wonder if Hendry would need to sacrifice Gallagher for Teahen.
  4. I just want this to get resolved. I'm getting ancy. You could be in for a lot of anxiety. This could drag on for weeks. Will Kosuke visit the states and tour the various cities interested in him?
  5. I'm too lazy to go back and look, but I believe all Bruce Miles said was that the Royals wouldn't do a Murton-Teahen straight up deal. It's completely plausible that Hendry is very interested in Teahen and would give up Murton and probably others for him. Murton, Fox, and a reliever like Petrick or Roquet for Teahen?
  6. Jim Hendry is not an idiot. He is, however, a very bad MLB GM. Good morning, Bruce. Bruce, what's up with Kosuke? Is this Royals interest genuine?
  7. I have predicted $40/3. I now fear that the price will be closer to $50/3.
  8. If by dynasty you mean making the playoffs quite a bit in a terrible division and possibly lucking into a World Series, but getting absolutely destroyed by any AL team that makes it, then yes we could be a dynasty. The Cubs are my density. Hello?! McFly?! Hello!?
  9. That's because every team uses about 6 or 7 starters, some many more. Of course you can find worse pitchers. But the only way you can be satisfied with the numbers Marquis gave you is if he was a 25 year old making his debut in the majors. You cannot seriously be satisfied getting those numbers in the first year of a three year contract of a guy with Marquis's track record. I think your expectations of a $7MM free agent starting pitcher are unrealistic. Last year, among the other pitchers others were hoping for were Padilla $9MM 5.76 ERA 1.63 WHIP, Zito ($10MM last year, big remaining contract) 4.53 ERA 1.35 WHIP and Schmidt ($15.75MM) 6.31 ERA 1.71 WHIP. Compared to those guys on the market, Marquis' deal was not that bad. As $7 pitchers go, Marquis is OK. The larger point is that smart teams shouldn't be paying $7 for players of Marquis' caliber. Save your money for players that actually make a difference.
  10. There is no doubt in my mind that Hendry is going to screw this up. None whatsoever.
  11. Is Sullivan's math really bad, or did the Cubs pick up more of Jones' salary than was originally reported? Jones is due $5M, and the Cubs sent $2M in the deal Jones is due $5 in salary, plus some portion of his $4 signing bonus. If the signing bonus is paid in equal installments, Jones is due $6.33 in 2008. There were reports that Jones' "salary" for next season is $5.5. That could be a mistake, or it could be evidence that the portion of his signing bonus due this coming January is $0.5. It seems safe to say that the Cubs saved somewhere between $4.33 ($6.33-$2) and $3.5 ($5.5-$2) by trading Jones.
  12. May I suggest that you apply Occam's Razor here?
  13. The most disturbing part of this is not that Punch Drunk has labeled Sam Fuld as untouchable. It's that he has labeled ANYONE untouchable. NO ONE IS UNTOUCHABLE!!! MacPhail or Beinfest calls up and expresses some interest in some of your so-called untouchables. Do you listen or do you hang up the phone? Maybe they really love Nick Markakis/Jeremy Hermida, but wouldn't mind using him to fill multiple spots. MLB's worst GM.
  14. Prior+ to the Rangers for Blalock Send Blalock to the Pirates for McLouth and Marte
  15. Bobby Novoa. Actually, Novoa and Ascanio had remarkably similar lines as 22 year olds in AA. Ascanio had slightly better K/IP and HR/IP ratios.
  16. "Kosume Fukodome" - Japanese for "Cosmo Kramer" "He's got the Kavorka!"
  17. His imaginary friend, "Shilo". By the way, feline AIDS is the #1 killer of domestic cats.
  18. #-o A guy that can frequently pitch 7-8 innings and give up 4 or 5 runs, but never let the game get away has some value. Not every Tom, Dick, and Harry can do that.
  19. And Punch Drunk is dicking around with Nate McLouth.
  20. Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
  21. Levine was just on the radio and claimed that the Padres have offered $40/4 for Kosuke. I predicted $40/3 and I'll stand by that.
  22. I'd believe what Bruce says over anything spewing out of Bruce Levine's mouth or MLBTradeRumors. Levine is a pretty good source, but he speculates more than "The Bruce".
