  1. This is the definition of an unnecessary dependent clause.
  2. If we're thinking of getting involved in Santana, we need to forget about that and try to get in on Miguel Cabrera instead.
  3. No one is dumber than Jim Hendry. To borrow a phrase from George Costanza, he is "Hendry, king of the idiots".
  4. OK then. Who plays center? Pie would be my preference. Mike Cameron would be an OK option, if he'd sign a two-year deal. He's played for Piniella before, so Lou would likely have an opinion on him. Kosuke, instead of in RF. Keep plugging away at Jim Bowden for Ryan Church. You could probably get the Dodgers to take a bunch of refuse and eat enough money to get Pierre down to something like a $24-28/4 obligation. Not anywhere near my first choice, but way better than Crawford-for-Hill.
  5. Rich Hill is a much more valuable property than Carl Crawford. Under no circumstances should Rich Hill be traded for Carl Crawford. Learn it. Live it. Love it.
  6. If Cameron's market dried up to the point where you could get him on a 2-year deal, he'd be a nice addition, paired with Kosuke. Soriano Cameron Kosuke Ramirez Theriot Matsui (since Punch Drunk seems destined to go there) Lee Soto
  7. That I disagree with this statement is a testament to just how bad this deal is. More than twice as much as Pierre's deal. Simply brutal.
  8. Not only did the second worst MLB GM in Chicago wildly overpay for Linebrink in both dollars and years, he also gets to cough up a second round draft choice for the privilege.
  9. Possible, but not likely. There's no incentive for them to wait. It's not their draft pick we'd be getting. But it is their biggest rival getting an extra one. The likelihood of Doug Melvin both being that smart and giving a damn is very small.

  12. I'll say Towers.

  14. I'd be perfectly happy to see the Cubs sign Andruw for $60/5. I imagine there's essentially zero chance he'd sign for that, though.
  15. I've always been a big Church fan, but working out a fair trade with Bowden is about as likely as me winning the lottery tomorrow. That guy would ask for Pie, Gallagher and Colvin if we inquired about their team equipment manager. A rhubarb pie, a Gallagher DVD, and a Shawn Colvin CD. Done!
  16. It seems like Hendry's interest in Ryan Church would fit well with having to wait for Kosuke. He'd be a decent fallback option in RF, but, if you did manage to land Kosuke, he'd also be an option in CF or even off the bench.
  17. Kaz Matsui-2B-Rockies Nov. 20 - 8:47 pm et Astros GM Ed Wade is in Los Angeles talking to free agents Kaz Matsui and Randy Wolf. It seems that the Astros and Matsui aren't quite as close to a deal as Tracy Ringolsby and Richard Justice indicated last night, so maybe the Cubs could still steal him away. Wolf indicated last year that he preferred the West Coast, and given similar offers, he could choose to stay in California.
  18. A new article from Bruce: http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=81558 Cubs general manager Jim Hendry was on the road Tuesday, perhaps courting free-agent second baseman Kaz Matsui, who played for the National League champion Colorado Rockies. Hendry wouldn't give his location, but the Cubs are hot after Matsui. Despite reports that the Houston Astros are close to signing Matsui, the Cubs appear to be very much in the running. Hendry also likes Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome, who has declared free agency but has yet to say if he'll change teams in Japan or come to North America. Fukudome, a left-handed hitter, is an on-base machine. He may not make his decision before the year ends. Outfielders Carl Crawford (Tampa Bay) and Ryan Church (Washington) also are on Hendry's radar, but neither of their teams is easy to deal with in trade talks. Whither Woody? The Cubs don't appear close to re-signing reliever Kerry Wood, a member of the organization since 1995. Wood is a free agent who may get offers from other clubs of two years and perhaps $10 million total. The Cubs look to be interested in an incentive-laden one-year deal with a club option based on health incentives for Wood, who came back from non-surgical rehab of his right shoulder this year.
  19. Hawks reportedly approached him 10 days ago. Please take Hendry with you, John. I can just see Hendry referring to Keith Magnuson as a "quality, quality guy".
  20. $5 is too high, but defensible under the circumstances. A guaranteed second year with no club protection is not.
  21. Quote from Hendry: "I feel very comfortable where I'm at and with my superiors," Hendry said Tuesday. "There's not another job in the world I would take besides general manager of the Chicago Cubs." Who else would have you? Kruger Industrial Smoothing? Maybe.
  22. "The Matsui sweepstakes" This is somewhat akin to a contest in which the "winner" gets kicked in the crotch by Adam Vinatieri.
  23. I'll put up $1000 at 5:1 odds against.
